Who knew we'd see Mal Reynolds go all evil and kill innocent girls? Not to mention crushing eyeballs. :( That Faith/Spike reunion was a long long time coming!

Anonymous

Looked like what Caleb did almost broke poor Shan... :(

Brendan O'Connor

Caleb cemented himself here as a hated villain and it only took him one episode to do it. I saw this before watching Firefly, I had trouble liking Mal until the end of the pilot. Nathan Fillion is a superb actor, because Caleb and Mal are polar opposites and when I’m watching one I don’t associate them with the other

What a powerful introduction of Caleb. By killing a couple of potentials with one swipe and taking out Buffy, Faith and Spike with relative ease (at first) - and then poking out Xander's eye - it really shows he's for real. A serious, serious threat. And I loved his wit. Perfect for a nasty bad guy.

Shan, Ray Charles is/was an American black singer and piano player that was blind. Hence Caleb calling the Bringers the "Ray Charles brigade." Loved it when he called Faith "the Cain to her [Buffy] Abel." And the ending, with him doing the voice over speech, really set an eerie/ominous note.

Jarrod Wild

He's a misogynist turned up to 11. Perfect adversary for strong young women.

Michael Roach

I hate that you were spoiled. It makes me mad too. I remember thinking in the very early stages of your reacting to Buffy that there would be a few that just couldn't keep themselves from spoiling you and here we are four episodes from the end and you're still being spoiled. So sorry, because it ruins it for you and it ruins it for us.

"Damn. I didn't know you were that cool"

MittenCrab

Ugh...Shannon with an 'o'. Can't say it wasn't deserved.

Now it feels like the stakes are high. A broken arm, then 2 dead girls, then Xander's eye... It was a few seasons ago when they first mentioned that Xander sees things. Wonder how many comments your mods deleted. :)

Allan Cornett

We are close to the end. Hope everyone has enjoyed the ride. Is this the first time for any others besides Shan?

Anonymous

the contrast between Mal and Caleb is great isn't it? It's good to have first seen firefly

Rafael Lemus

I could be wrong, but I believe this is the first scene with James Marsters and Eliza Dushku. The only other exchange between Spike and Faith was in Who Are You and that was SMG as Faith.

One of my favorite things about The First is that it recognizes The Slayer as an adversary. If Buffy hadn't been protecting the key, I doubt Glory would have thought about her at all. Angelus and The Mayor considered her a pest, but not a real threat. The Master and Adam saw that Buffy was a strong person but tried to use her strength as a tool in their plans. Then, along comes First Evil. Even though it can't physically attack anyone, it has taken The Slayer seriously since the start of the season. Bringers – not going to be enough. An Ubervamp showed promise, but only for a while. Turning Spike and Wood against Buffy was a bust. Now it brings in Caleb with his amazing strength and an equally powerful conviction that he is doing the right thing. On the down side, Buffy isn't making very good decisions lately. IMO.

Jarrod Wild

Yeah based on their conversations in this episode, it's pretty clear Caleb was a serial murderer of girls *before* he met the First. And it chose him for that reason, he was probably the worst kind of person it could find.

Jarrod Wild

That's unfortunate, but also a testament to Nathan as a performer. I of course had the reverse reaction, being used to him as Mal and then seeing him play this foul degenerate serial killer with the First having his back.

Chris (darkwater)

Really enjoyed the reaction to the eye thing.. cause yeah that was everyone!

Great reaction, still today that is my face when the eye bit comes on, still freaks me out.

WHAT?????????????? Stupid f'ing people have spoiled you again????? Are you f'ing kidding me???????? Still??? We're nearly at the (screw it with being polite) fucking end, and people STILL can't keep their fucking mouth shut??? I am beyond livid at this point. This asshat needs to be bombarded with a thousand pieces of hate mail for screwing this up for you...and the rest of us. Who the hell is this sick jackass who couldn't keep their mouth shut??? They need to be torn a new one for this crap!

Brandon Wiesner

I don't know who it was but I know it was on Twitter. The same person also apparently spoiled Dark Willow. Someone also spoiled Warren not really being dead on YT yesterday. People are just assholes.

Simon Mathew

For the record, Faith's last name is Lehane, don't worry it's not a spoiler and doesn't relate to anything, just thought you were trying to figure out words when singing the song, lol

I love Xander in this episode and I love how the episode is kind of a character study of Xander. We see different aspects of the character represented, the sex-obsessed teen, the mature adult, the one who sees, and they're presented in order so that we are witness to a mini character evolution in just one episode. It's amazing that the dude who crashed his skateboard because he saw a pretty girl is the same guy who is specifically targeted and hurt by Caleb. Xander has certainly grown over the years.

I love Buffys face when she sees Spike and Faith in the basement together. You can see the jealousy straight away. I guess Buffy still has trust issues and insecurities when it comes to Faith being around “her men” which is completely understandable. So Caleb is a nasty piece of work and a pig when it comes to women but a powerful pig. Poor Xander :(

HuntingSwan

My favorite character (Faith) is back on the show! This episode ramped up the tension so much. It just feels like we're moving towards something big!

Coming to you in 2D :´(

Danna

Xander's speech about 'go for the eyes'... then Caleb goes for his eye :'(

Anonymous

BTW, Shan's being spoiled about Nathan Fillion's arrival is one of the reasons I would have GREATLY preferred she not have watched Firefly before finishing Buffy. I think it would have made his scenes as Caleb much more intense and dramatic for her. Knowing the actor as a "good guy" on another series kind of screwed up his intro here, imho. At least in the way she perceived him. I think that's unfortunate.

Anonymous

Don't know if Shan will see this or not, but I had a question for her. When Dawn said there might be some nice hotels for tried to kill your sister types, Shan responded with something like, "Yeah, that didn't happen. A false memory there." Or something like that. Am I missing something? Faith did try to kill Buffy in the past, in a round about way. Dawn wasn't wrong to be standoffish of Faith in that first moment, no?

HuntingSwan

I think Shan thought that Dawn was saying that Faith tried to kill Dawn at some point. We don't know how season 3 changed so it may have happened at some point. Or it could have been season 4 when she took Joyce, and presumable Dawn too, hostage.

AfterShowReactions

Firefly is not the reason I was spoiled about Caleb. When I watched 7x01 I tweeted saying "Time to begin the last season" and somebody tweeted a picture of him with Black eyes... Had absolutely NOTHING to do with Firefly.

Will

Yeah, there's nothing at Sunnydale High for Buffy. Except for money.

Andrew Pulrang

Ray Charles Brigade = the Bringers, who are blind, as the soul singer Ray Charles was blind. It's a very slightly dated reference at this point, though not when the show first aired. Caleb's Southern (US) accent I'm sure is intentional. It goes along with the stereotype of the Southern evangelical / fire and brimstone preacher who is also a hypocrite, very sexist, and maybe also hiding some deeply sinful preoccupations. Kind of like an '80s TV evangelist. So it's also a little bit of a dated theme, since that's a little less of a popular stereotype now. But also, the accent isn't that far from Mal's on Firefly!

Anonymous

One of my favorite details about these crossover episodes this year is the casual ways they point out that people like Angel and Faith also have false memories of Dawn, even though Dawn didn't exist when they were in Sunnydale. That's a powerful spell.

Patrick Lyke

While I am disappointed someone decided to spoil part of this ep for you, I am glad the ending didn't get spoiled...your reaction to Caleb and Xander was everything!! :)

Ron Fehr

Shan, remember your reaction when you saw Faith on Angel. I had the same response when I first saw this episode. YAY Faith!! Also isn't it a bit weird seeing Mal and Zoey being bad guys on Buffy and Angel? Sorry that the surprise at the episode's beginning was spoiled for you. The only good excuse would be that the person who spoiled the surprise hadn't watched your reactions from the beginning. Because then he or she would know how you feel about spoilers. If that's not the case, then shame on whoever did it.

cil

Maybe don't allow people to send you gifs anymore if they run the risk of containing spoilers. I kinda feel sorry for whoever it is... being criticized in such a public way :/

Ron Fehr

Caleb's reference to woman's first sin was a little inaccurate. Nowhere does the Bible say that the fruit that Satan offered to Eve was an apple. That has just been the assumption.

Ron Fehr

I believe that that there was a 'brief' time when people considered making a spinoff with Faith and Spike. Wonder what that would have been like.

Ron Fehr

Well, Giles told Buffy that she would have to make some hard decisions. And this was definitely one of them.

Richard Lucas

They wanted to make it but Eliza turned it down. It was Spike and Faith traveling cross country on a motorcycle.

BaoziBang

After that Faith/Spike scene first aired there were suddenly a lot more Faith/Spike FFs and I loved it 😂

I was really looking forward to your reaction of finding out Mel is the bad guy too bad someone ruined
