The fan is now user-controllable, the face-button layout can now be toggled into XBOX mode and the vibration motor is finally working the way its supposed to!

How to install: Unpack the attached files using 7zip and follow the included instructions found inside README.txt.

Things to note when updating from a previous build: If you previously had Google Apps installed, please make sure you re-install them after the update to avoid crashes!

For those needing the Google Play Store: Reboot into TWRP and install the latest OpenGapps ARM64 8.1 Pico bundle! (I suggest you finish the first-time setup with WiFi disabled... things move so much faster if you do!)

For those needing root: Magisk is included out of box and only needs to be activated on first boot. A WiFi connection is required for the initial Magisk activation.

Changelog

  • Added manual fan control quick toggle (Off -> Medium -> High -> Auto)
  • Added face button swap quick toggle (Nintendo -> XBOX)
  • Fixed vibration motor

Fixable known issues

  • For some odd reason Android picks up a modem in this device?
Kind of useless without a SIM-card slot to go with it...

just tried this and got stuck in a boot loop, tried twice now - not sure what has gone wrong

I'll take another look. It's been a long night dual-wielding this and my day-job nightshift.

blackseraph

Me neither. If you want me to help I'll need a bit more info than "Something has failed". If you can get logs captured that would be the best, if not then a as detailed as possible description would be good to have.

I have now reflashed the original firmware so bsck up and running and i can give it another go. Cant say anything appeared wrong during the running of the bat file and when complete the rg552 rebooted to say erasing and then it rebooted again and displayed the anbernic logo then after 5 seconds or so rebooted again and again. I did look in twrp for logs and the screen in twrp did show android 8.1 so at least in part it must have worked. Will try again when i get a few minutes

Just keep us posted. Many have successfully made the jump already so it can't be something all that difficult to overcome (whatever it is that's causing your issues).

Planning to run this update soon, any reason to hold out?

blackseraph

There will be additional updates to this OS to improve it's capabilities (touchscreen mapping, some streaming service fixes, maybe a mild overclock, etc) but all of these will be incremental (meaning you can install them on top of the previous one without losing data via TWRP) so I don't see a reason to hold out.

Could you add the function of unlocking the screen by pressing A button in the future, for example, as on retroid pocket 2 +

How do I "Boot into TWRP (recovery)"? I've got android 8.1 installed, but not sure how to install TWRP

Anonymous

Turn off your device. Press and hold the F Button and the Power Button at the same time. Let go when you see the Anbernic Logo.

You're on your own there. Sorry. I have no suitable binaries ready to work with MacOS.

For me it is not possible to get access under Linux (Raspbian) to the device to start the install process. All done in the Readme file. Volume „+“, F button, Power-button pressed, the fan starts, all buttons released and screen stays black, device not found. With lsusb command rockchip device not listed It shows up when I boot in to normal mode, with MTP file transfer i can have access to the filesystem. I‘m still not able to run the install.sh without exec format error. Rkdeveloptool is installed as well Maybe someone has a solution for that. (Maybe I need to buy a Windows PC 🤣)

blackseraph

The install tool doesn't run on arm/aarch64 arch computers. You'll need a x86_64 computer or run the tools through qemu_x86_64.

Update: Solved the below, just leaving it here in case anyone else hits the same problem. The issue was I needed to install the RK3399 driver on my PC from the "Driver" folder. Once I'd done this, holding the button combo and booting the device left it on a black screen rather than the Android Recovery. ---------- I'm having trouble getting this to flash. Bit of an Android novice so could be overlooking something obvious. 1. Connected to my (Win10) PC using USB-A->C cable. 2. Boot the RG552 using the button combo and I end up at the Android Recovery screen. Detected in device manager as "rk3399-all". 3. Opened a Command Prompt, CD to the unpacked MaskRom directory 4. Run install.bat. Watching the log file while this executes I see "Error:config.ini is not existed" printed over and over. 5. Nothing seems to have been flashed to the device. No reboot happens, and if I reboot manually I just end up in the stock Anbernic Android. Any pointers on anything I may be doing wrong?

Thank you for pre-operation "Install Driver". I think this operation must for android 8.1 updating

I'm struggling with screen rotation now... I think the device not includes a accelerometer, so rotation depends on device mood haha. I've installed an app I love (Graph89 - TI89 calculator emulator) but detects rotation as vertical. I've tried to lock rotation to landscape but it doesn't work. Is it possible to change rotation manually?

I can't seem to get my device to good into recovery mode. Holding Volume +, F Button and Power Button I get no response, I've held for more than 30 seconds with no activity. Anything I'm missing?

blackseraph

Boot into Android, open Magisk, tap the reboot icon on the top right (spinning circle symbol) and choose "Reboot to Recovery".

Anonymous

ok that was able to get me into recovery, however my computer does seem to pickup the device via USB

Do you guys leave the fan on auto or medium or anything?

blackseraph

Personal preference really. I mostly run it off because I'm a Tetris kind of guy.

Anonymous

I'm using it as needed, I was playing PSP GOW and I felt the back getting warm, turned it to medium and it went away

Anonymous

Yeah I’ll be playing snes and psp so I wasn’t sure what was recommended

blackseraph

It's a bit too early to tell where the sweet spot will be but rule of thumb is that if you think the performance you are having is too low, try ramping up the fan to counteract potential throttling.

What does the nintendo-xbox button face do?

blackseraph

It switches the internal gamepad's button layout. On Nintendo mode the shoulder buttons register as digital button presses (L2/R2) while on XBOX mode they register as analog axis values (LTRIGGER/RTRIGGER) and the A/B and X/Y buttons are swapped. Rule of thumb: If your gamepad isn't working right in an app (maybe the shoulder buttons don't work or your face button directions are wrong) then try swapping the gamepad into the opposite mode. A good example is GeForce Now and XBOX Game Pass, which only work properly in XBOX mode. Drastic, the NDS emulator, on the other hand only works properly on the Nintendo layout.

Got ya, i finally got everything installed and its running great
