First, yes, Vickie Vail is from the comics (when I was young she was his most famous love interest, I think) - if you're older, it's Catwoman, which has come back in the last ten years or so.

Second (accidentally hit enter), the Joker and Batman creating each other was created for this movie. The old origin of the Joker (he's a character who has had a ton of origins that have changed through the years), was that he was a gangster who jumped into a vat of chemicals to escape from the Batman (which is what the origin here is going for). Third, Harley Quinn was created AFTER this (in Batman the Animated Series) - and her origin as Joker's psychiatrist didn't come around until relatively late in that series (as I recall).

I know a lot of people love Batman Returns, but I've never been a fan. Burton is just a director I don't particularly care for, because sometimes it feels, to me, like it's weird for the sake of being weird, and Batman Returns falls under that umbrella. (This is where I say I also don't particularly like Beetlejuice, much to my wife's chagrin.)

You all should watch Birdman starring Michael Keaton. Heavily inspired by his legacy as Batman and it’s a meta commentary on stardom. Won best picture in 2015
