Squidfish

Anthony Johnson

Yoooooo pleeeeeeeease find wintertime also love every vid

Anonymous

Wow Andrew! Great moves! Keep it up!

Max M

Wow, that is an awesome deep dive into the 20th century history of Philly. I didn't know suburbs were invented at that time, very interesting to see the thread of how redlining has a sort of domino effect on an entire area like that. Keep it up, AC, awesome reporting.

Anonymous

ending like that?!

Hayley van Eykeren

been waiting for this!!! cant wait for the next omg. thank you so much for all the historical background, as a canadian i extra appreciate it lol

Tobin Charles

the pop psychology analysis of the dealers is terrible. You're reading what they say to you, a representative of the public, as what they really think. Not a very intelligent reading given the obvious motive for them to dissimulate during the interview

Matt Guastaferro

“Hey babe, check it out , channel 5 just dropped”

Anonymous

Amazing work Andrew! This is incredible. I am so proud of you.

illethic

Damn, that was all!???

Christopher Thomas

was legit telling my mom about what yall are doing today

C Jay

Damn I kinda wanna do some tranq. Jk. Nah f that. Good coverage tho.

Anthony Johnson

Bro help me tell Andrew to find wintertime the more people to do it he has to say somethin🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Grandma knarf

It would be really funny if you anonymously reported those tranq cooks, like realllllly funny. Also replace funny with good for the community.

Anonymous

You know ive lived in philly my entire life and never thought that K&A was a real estate scheme. I always just thought the police decided to just contain all the addicts over there so nobody else would have to deal with them. Did you do more research into why the police seem to never do shit? I feel like it has to do with the fraternal order of police.

Daniel Carroll

I believe you are educating and raising awareness in a respectful way bro. Actively questioning ones own actions is a decent indicator one has a decent moral compass. So I have heard...

M h71498

It's crazy to hear more of the stories my great grandfather used to tell me about what your talking about and to think I just drive by this shit everyday and am just to desensitized to it to care half the time. I love your work thank you for what you do

Anonymous

Great Moves! Keep it up! Proud of you mane

Hunter Delgado

Super awesome dude but fuck you for tickling my balls and blue balling me like that, at least give a brother an outro before you black screen a mf shit

Anonymous

This is great. I’m from the Jersey side I’m from one of the former Levittowns, it’s called Willingboro now. It’s unique compared to others bc it’s the only one that’s predominantly black today. Would be dope to get a shout out. Love your work.

Anonymous

It's a liberal city. Mass incarceration of drug addicts won't be popular, and neither will involuntary drug treatment. Also, taking down the kingpins will only make room for another. We're also plagued by gun violence, and the cops have their hands full (they're arguably corrupt and lazy). K&A is the least of their worries. People don't care about the poor. But yeah, I think Kensington is a real estate scheme. Northern Liberties was first, then Fishtown, and now Kensington. Have you driven down Front Street going north, then turned onto Kensington Ave? They are really building that area. It's nice and then randomly turns into the hood. Eventually, it won't be the hood either. We are one of the last major cities that is still fairly affordable. Investors see that and are building. Once money starts flooding the area, the city will ensure it's policed well. What will happen to the addicts? Who knows? They'll probably get pushed out further into the Northeast eventually.

Anonymous

interview the pimps, sexual trafficking is big down there

Miccalo

Excellent video covering many difficult topics. I appreciate how you query everyone's underlying thoughts and motives. I also agree with your assessments presented here regarding the brain. I just wish these videos were longer!

Miccalo

Disagree entirely. Yours is the typical condescending snobbery of the ill-informed eager to prove themselves otherwise.

Anonymous

I like history

Anonymous

Awesome stuff... Finding that footage must have been difficult

demlet

I tend to agree. The analysis comes close to the truth though. Most likely people like this simply don't care; or if they even think about it at all, recognize, unfortunately rightly I think, that good and evil aren't real. That, plus a lack of empathy, equals some extremely destructive behavior.

Ian Horner

Feedback: I don't know how I feel about that stock footage of the child abduction. It's kinda funny in theory, but I thought it was regular B roll at first, so I found it shocking when he grabbed the girl.

Anonymous

This jawn looks crazy now. FYI I was replying to someone's comment but they deleted it 😂

Sweaty Palms

love all the info/history you have been putting in the new videos!

Sweaty Palms

i'd much rather try to understand a situation with all of its historical and political context than the sensational clickbait bs the internet is usually bricked up for. thank you andrew

Sweaty Palms

also really fw what were u were saying about does anyone consciously spread evil, very intriguing question just like u sad they put up frameworks in their head to justify what they are doing, more or less numb/desensitize themselves

Anonymous

Really impressive B-Roll selection/finds I felt like I could see it all happening.

Ty B

please email are shipping progress on the books

demlet

Yes, the words you used are all English. Welcome to Earth.

Nyesha Jenkins

I feel like I was in my race and ethnicity class lol you definitely gave a good history lesson ❤️

peacenluv

this is crazy informative!! very much looking forward to part 4 <3

Ryder from California

Andrew, I had no idea you were from Philly! Everyone I've ever met from there is easy to talk to (myself included). Your piece is an excellent primer on the complicated history of Philly. Way way back my family moved to Philly from Virginia. My grandfather's brother lived to be 101 years old, and one of his lasting memories was being able to buy a home in Elkins Park, just north of the city. Looking forward to more of your coverage of a very overlooked and underrated city! Keep it up!

The Crippler

Truly appreciate this series, very legitimate reporting, high levels of awareness, and without a doubt worth reporting on. When I watch channel 5 pieces it leads to reflection, a sense of understanding, and less judgment of those who are suffering at all levels. Keep up the good work Andrew and Crew!

Adam Anderson

Please please please host these on YouTube. This player sucks. Constantly buffering with no way to change quality

bat kyak

Nice work Andrew!

Ryan Todd

This is real fucking journalism. This is why I support ya!

Jaymoe

WW2 ended in 1945 not 1944. Roosevelt died before the war ended.

DW

the tranq dealers' justification is cognitive dissonance 101

Anonymous

Fucking great insight into the history of Philly

Gilena Simons

Beautiful analysis. As a Taoist I agree with you, and believe people have different values and goals. I always encourage Buddha’s eightfold path, which includes “right occupation”. It’s my understanding this would not include occupations which lead to others’ suffering. God bless and amen. 🇬🇧

Anonymous

incredible stuff

Gilena Simons

You are so brave and so very true. Ty for this powerful and impactful content. 🇬🇧

Anonymous

are you sure that "half of all American males" fought in WW2? (9:09)

Anonymous

maybe from a specific age range that you forgot to mention...

Anonymous

phenomenal storytelling

Nolan Wilder

Really great stuff. Thank you 🙏

Anonymous

the cognitive dissonance goes crazy with some of these dealers. and your documentation style you’ve been doing lately is really amazing. super inspiring as a young person looking for real journalism.

DazedDingo

Can we expect a Philly Streets line of merch, plz?

Anonymous

Man you went there with this one. My respect for you and your team just reached another level. This is what journalism looks like. You are serving the community, the people, the world with your work. It's a beautiful thing. Thank you for digging into the history of Philadelphia and explaining how things got the way they are instead of just exploiting people who are struggling with addiction and mental health issues.

Ejazzle

wow this country could've been so different if they offered equal opportunity at purchasing homes in those levittowns.

Anonymous

I really like the direction this has taken!! Great job as always

Justin Smith

This is true journalism! I love that you even examine your own ethics in covering this material. Keep it up!

Anonymous

this story needs to be told over and over and over again so that people know why they live the way they live

Denny Chandler

Fantastic reporting. Thank you!

Anonymous

damn, now I’m feigning for part 4 😅

Dustin

Love the history lesson. I would dig seeing more historical based docs in the future

Anonymous

Thankful you're talking about White Flight and redlining. We must end it #YIMBY

Emilio Cepeda

So glad you guys are back and doing this amazing project.

Anonymous

This was very interesting to watch, thank you Andrew.

Anonymous

This Philly series hits close to home for me. I grew up right down the street from Kensington, but we moved around 2009 or so as things were starting to take a turn for the worse. I always had an underlying feeling that my neighborhood wasn't safe but never really understood. This is providing so much missing context.

Anonymous

When are you coming to Hastings?

Bernardo Hernandez

This part of history is what fuels racist people to believe in the white man's burden.

djdeutschebahn

Really love the Film work and apart from the great textual work as always

Anonymous

Perfect description of the Irish famine

Anonymous

Love that you're doing a historical analysis of American cities and highlighting the state's role in creating the drug crisis. Very well-informed and accurate. It really comes across that you try to think critically and compassionately about the problems the US is facing right now. Keep it up!

Ben M

Fuck those POS land developers trying to build livable neighborhoods in Kensington !!

Anonymous

Thankyou so much for what you do! 🙏🏼

Sean Andrews

love the music, can't wait for pt. 4

Kirby

You named something so incredibly important at the start: the nihilistic view of our lack of agency in a world that moves towards doom without us. I’m walking out of this today like I can make real change, and help real people.

Hayden

The south had cheap land and competed with the northern factories by eliminating labor protections, hence textile mills moving to the south after the civil war. That’s most likely why the factories left Philly imo

Ben

In my opinion your best work yet. Whereas in previous videos there was some times a "check out this wacked out part of society" vibe, here it seems to me you speak from experience and as being deeply affected to the topic you cover. Powerful stuff! Looking forward :)

Anonymous

Love the work, just a fact check, WW2 end and GI return should be dated to 1945 (not '44). Don't want you to get spammed when this gets released.

Nicholas Leiber

Facts. Education is power. Majority of folks have no idea why their neighborhood is worse than others.

Colin Uthe

2018 Andrew: haha drunk guy said stupid thing 2023 Andrew: Do most people committing evil acts psychologically shield themselves?

Anonymous

Is this a joke? The issue was their refusal to sell to black people, not them trying to make livable neighborhoods

Anonymous

I watch Channel 5 and Brandon Buckingham. No disrespect to Buckingham, but his videos are more for entertainment than educating the public. You've become a real journalist, not just a YouTuber looking for views and partying with the locals.

Ty B

I wish i had my all gas no brakes book

Dasloops

Love you guys, but some constructive criticism: I appreciate channel 5 for its ability to be a mirror to the world and how complex it is. You lose a bit of that when you try to shape a subjective narrative, especially a moral one. Saying these dealers are evil, or that the city of Kensington is allowing open drug markets to flourish to lower land prices, or that the british committed genocide against the irish via the potato famine, or white flight-- these are complex issues, multipolar and something you can't just wrap up in a nice bow. There's a burden of proof if you want to make those claims. So maybe interview some Kensington city officials and ask them about commercial developers, and vice versa

Anonymous

Are the Kensington city officials supposed to have an answer on the evils of drug dealers and the potato famine? Do you really think when faced with honest questions, that dishonest people will rise to the occasion and call out the evils of a society that they derive their profits from? Is anyone really this naive, the legacy of red lining is established historical fact across many major U.S. cities and its affects on non-white populations isn't really up for debate. Arguing for a burden of proof on events that are decades old is just a wildly ignorant thing to be doing.

Anonymous

Andrew alright, i know this may come as a shock to you, but we are not black nor african american. Those are both misnomers created by the United States corporation to rename the American Indians tribesman different nationalities so they did not have to honor the Peace treaties. I can list every law pertaining to this if needed.

Anonymous

You're not Andrew.. at all, however since you feel entitled to my efforts I will assist you. The Treaty of Peace and Friendship [June 28 1786]. The Indian Peace Treaty of 1865. 18 USC 1151 shows you the American Lands are known as Indian Country. Public law 94-241 shows you that the location of the United States corporation is locked to Washington DC.

Anonymous

There is an entire case law you can find they attempted to dismiss our rights as American Indians. Harvest Institute Freedman Federation v Dirk Kempthorne.

Anonymous

I really like how you acknowledged the morbid and taboo appeal of your videos. Very self-aware. I think that's in part what makes your videos interesting. But (especially starting with the SF doc) you are doing real and valuable journalism. Keep it up, Andrew and company!

Anonymous

You seem confused, American Indian tribes are a whole different atrocity than so called African Americans, but lets not compare tragedies

Anonymous

I think he's probably aware the war ended in 1945, he was talking about the GI Bill ... From Wikipedia: On June 22, 1944, the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, commonly known as the G.I. Bill of Rights, was signed into law.

Anonymous

I am not confused. How about you actually learn something. The American Indians are copper colored and the "native Americans" are siberians and other nations non indigenous to America. Don't play the fuck around and find out you're dumb game with me. The audacity that it took to come to me empty handed and air headed after i have literally provided my evidence.

Anonymous

The native American culture isn't even from here. There is only one other place in the world that uses teepees home structures and they aren't American. American culture starts with simple things like the milpa planting system of braiding the roots of corn squash and bean plants. Funny how only one culture uses those same herbs in America. Southern American cooking is known for this not native American. You cannot have a foreigner come to a new country and plant. It takes great understanding of the land. What native American farmers do you know? My people been farming this land since before we were forced to.

Anonymous

Bravo!

Anonymous

You do good work Andrew

Oakoka

Most cities have an area like that that has been that way for decades. Seen the same in San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver, LA, ect. I think it’s a common strategy in cities.

Anonymous

(re 8:02) Although the GI Bill did pass in 1944, the war didn't end til 1945, and many troops remained overseas for years afterwards

Anonymous

“Then in 1944 the war ends and the troops come home.” Maybe he is talking about the GI bill but actual words he is saying can easily be misinterpreted and perceived as incorrect. He’s doing a piece of historical education, it’s a good idea to be as clear and correct as possible. It’s as easy as “With the war coming to an end, in 1944(blah blah blah) GI bill”

tony ravioli

Hi Andrew and team, thanks for all the new content recently! I didn't enjoy this video as much as other recent ones- I hope that part 4 connects this all back to the current situation in Philly pretty hard. I think lots of the content of this video has already been well documented by others, with countless other videos on YouTube alone for these topics (Jim Crowe america, redlining, how suburbs came to be, etc) in general. What's much more interesting, to me, is to see your perspective on what's going on now. I would love to watch you dive deep into the factors that cause a situation like Kensington to arise, but go for the throat! Whether property developers, cops, local officials, university representatives, or whatever- see if any of these folks will spill the beans! You seem to imply that Kensington isn't a "typical" gentrification situation (l agree), and that it's a coordinated and corrupt effort. I hope part 4 sheds some light on more evidence for these claims, rather than more distant and less specific-to-Philly history. Check out some of Charlie LeDuff's older work to see what I mean. Just wanted to share my 2 cents in case you read this. Keep doing your thing. ✌️

Burnet Deown

im sure he was planning on it... bro is on to something here eat your popcorn and wait a sec

gringo_star1969

Damn I never knew you had a the philly connection thats pretty interesting.

gringo_star1969

I understand it’s hard to get a candid opinion from a plug in a trap house. That being said I think you missed whole perspective that is pertinent to a valid take on the situation. Socioeconomic and educational disadvantages are important take into consideration in regards to the outlook of the plug. I wish you touched on the effects of encroaching gentrification on the heads in the K&A, because that is the modern day language of redlining. (Ps I’m not a tranq apologist) I grew up outside Philly in Delco when I was a kid, then moved in with my Dad, in Southwest. The K&A is undoubtedly the epicenter in Philly. The truth is this shit is everywhere, it’s just not always as pervasive. (In regards to fent not tranq) Out of highschool I moved to Portland, and pretty much more of the same in regards to drug-use. The point is, it’s indicative of a greater systemic problem and these are the aftershocks. The pharmaceutical industrial complex created the problem, lied about the efficacy, and cashed out. bada bing bada boom. Now the whole country is left with the human collateral damage. Keep up the goodwork, I’m glad to see to taking a more serious route. I will get off my soapbox now.

RAS

"If I don't kill you now, you're gonna die someday anyway". Stellar logic...

Anonymous

Great information! This is what we need to get back to when it comes to news. Our ignorance in practically everything is the reason America is falling.

Anonymous

"A person has no power in changing or influencing the trajectory of a doomed society" when I think about my students in Kensington and philly, it starts young. They see their parents, uncles, aunts, with the same ideologies or they see their relatives suffering with addiction. The children of Kensington have enough awareness, they know what this shit is, they need resources and ACTUAL change besides shiesty bans and CURFEWS. The average age a student goes into drug crime in philly is around 14-15 years old from my understanding. Our school systems are projecting a deficit in the 700 millions by 2027, not to mention the amount of lawsuits and malpractice. Im not saying school systems are the solvent to everything philly is facing, but how can we expect them to see value in education when we dont see the value in supplying the funding for quality education. HOW CAN WE EXPECT STUDENTS TO BELIEVE THEY CAN MAKE CHANGE WHEN THE PEOPLE WHO CAN HAVE FAILED THEM EVERY-TIME. Alot of parents send their kids to charter schools not knowing that they barely teach about subjects like science and social studies because it isnt monitored by the state like a public school is, they care about their math and reading scores, because thats what they are required to show. Ive seen a charter school go through 4 different social studies teachers in 5 months and not even bat an eye. That isnt to say that all charter schools are like this, but its an active concern of educators. Not to mention the fact that none of us can get in touch with a parent when something is wrong, which I believe is deep rooted in their own personal experience of disappointment and betrayal in the school system. Its a cycle of our school systems, not have the funding to supply the resources. The funding that we do obtain goes to the large, excessive amount of higher ups that are being paid larger amounts. While teachers in philly are still being paid shit, and it shows in the retention rates. Im done LMAO enough social media for the day

Anonymous

As someone who works in the school system, specifically in kensington. Would you mind sharing a bit about your experiences in the school system? Specifically how were your experiences learning subjects such as science and social studies? retention of teachers? If you dont feel comfortable going into detail, understood completely. I have experience in north philly, but im interested in hearing more from south.

Anonymous

Italians ran out of philly in the 90s, and they took quality pizza with them

Anonymous

I live about ten minutes from Levittown. Interestingly enough it has essentially become the recovery center for Bucks County. Rehabs, sober houses and recovery houses are everywhere there.

Anonymous

You might be the only journalist actually digging into the multivariate and messy backgrounds of social ills. I lived in San Francisco for 5+ years, including through the pandemic, and it is so refreshing to hear a public figure talk about *all* angles of the issues instead of just beating a particular political drum. You should get the goddamn Pulitzer (you won't though, sorry -- that's reserved for people who are more obedient and more boring). But I'll support this sort of work in any way I can. What you are doing is more important than the output of entire papers of record at this particular time in human history. Thanks for being you. Keep doing it. I'll keep supporting you.

Evan

Thanks for the good work Andrew. Zines getting shipped soon?

trythinking

Good journalism as always. I dont think it is fair to blame everything on white people. That is getting tiresome to hear. People can choose to NOT do a bunch of terrible drugs regardless of their situation. I do have sympathy for addiction. I blame feminism for basically every economic and political turmoil we have today. The break down of the family structure has hurt black people in a worse way than white people even. Men have no incentive and more competition with women in job markets. Leads to single mom houses, which leads to kids who end up committing more crimes.

Nate Fifield

My parents think the same way as you. In their view (informed by their evangelical worldview) the causes of problems are sinful choices by others. To them, and it appears to you, people are poor and get into drugs because they are bad people and make bad choices. If you listen to what the people are saying in this series and the San Francisco series most people say they want to quit but they’re hopeless because the social safety net is more primed to punish them instead of help them. People often steal because they are desperate and there is nothing left for them. Help and don’t judge, that’s the best way to assist people in getting back up on their feet.

Anonymous

I like where this is headed. Culture isn't as simple as day to day choices. Ideologies permeate through cities, and people throughout time. Decisions made today, especially ones regarding the welfare of citizens in a community, will have consequences for years to come. One of the curses of human nature is to look at your immediate surroundings to explain the circumstances. However, we rarely consider how the systemic lack of support can have a ripple effect on the outcome of an area and a community. The only caveat is that drugs don't discriminate, they will ruin anyones lives, but if you look a little closer at the communities that are suffering the worst, you will find a safe haven for illness that has been created by contempt and greed.

Anonymous

"the potato famine, a deliberate famine staged by the british" whoaa ho ho whoa there brothers idk about that. Between intentional neglect, intentional self preservation, intentional exploitation and intentional implementation of the potato blight are seas of nuance, I dont know about that statement

Anonymous

Flooding a community with drugs is always a great opener for those looking to rinse & repeat a community that is beginning to escape lending-slavery.

Clinton Weeks

This is white guilt in action. No where in this video did he blame white people. He just explained a history of event that happened to black Americans. The fact you take this information as an attack is very telling.

Anonymous

The Tenderloin was the Tenderloin before anyone uttered the word 'progressive'. It's just as much a story of segregation and police corruption like Kensington.

Anonymous

This is why i pay 5$

Anonymous

World War 2 ended in 1945 not '44.

SanestFlexican

further reading on how racist suburbia was born can be found in "the color of law", really good bite-size abstract Andrew, mad respect.

hoopoebird

I wouldn't say your coverage is unethical- you treat everyone you interview with respect and your approach is clearly intended to illuminate rather than exploit. I appreciate the context you're bringing to the systemic issues at play here- particularly the GI Bill and redlining in terms of infrastructure discrimination.

trythinking

come up with something more original before spitting out the most average take with no basis. I don't believe in white guilt lol. As far history is concerned, white people ended slavery and the USA has the more affluent black people in the world. So on behalf of all white people, youre welcome man.

trythinking

oh okay, yes. It is literally everyone's fault EXCEPT for the person shooting the drugs into their veins. If only they were in the best country in the world with welfare programs, food banks, social programs, etc. Oh wait this is in the USA? Ohhh. Come on get real. Plenty of ex-addicts will tell you the solution is not giving people syringes and passing the blame to others.

Anonymous

so good ;)

Anonymous

Respect man, you've really done a great job with this one. Describing the potatoe famine as a genocide really hit hard, not many have the balls to say it.

Ryan Ellis

Your relentless pursuit of seeing and conveying our issues as clearly, contextual rich, and honest as possible is astonishing. Full respect to say the least bruh

Anonymous

weird seeing a wegmans bag in there

Anonymous

thank you so much for all your work! this is so important that everybody sees this.

Anonymous

please come back to vancouver, we have a similar situation going on!

Anonymous

The fact that andrew and his team took the time to step back, analyze their own content, and ask "whats the real story here?" and change this from exploitation of the disenfranchised into a true documentary on the causes and effects of the drug epidemic. This is a hallmark of a great journalist and documentarian.

Chris Bay

I don't think your coverage is unethical. That Ricky guy in San Fran is a giant asshole and I hope he falls down a manhole.

Anonymous

Agreed there's nothing conclusive to confirm Andrew's statement

BlindFaith

Can this be made free for schools?

Alex Decker

I love the history deep dives you do, wanted to share with a friend but its not on youtube :/ i still really enjoyed watching it rhough, very informative

Anonymous

WWII ended SEP, 2nd, 1945. Not 1944.

Nic soroka

You coverage is not fucked up or unethical

Peter Wolinsky

Thank god you’re back man

Anonymous

The intro to this reminds me of a quote from Socrates that says "No one knowingly does evil", and he goes on to argue that evil doers think that they are achieving some good by their evil acts. Whenever I'm confronted with evil behavior that I just can't understand I think back on this and instead of giving into righteous indignation I try to see what good they could think their actions bring about. It really helps re-center me and process the emotional reaction I have to what I see as evil acts, and can even give me a way to start a discussion with the "evil doer".

SK

i love an urban development history lesson always god bless

homebrew901

Those dudes you interviewed were tweekers or coke heads with a shoebox full of shit talking like they’re so bad when they aren’t at all

Joshua Rose

Your self examination of the ethics of your reporting is remarkably self aware. You are certainly reporting on things our state needs to know and hear on all levels. Don't stop, you are doing good.

Anonymous

As a Philly native living in Upstate NY, like bordering VT upstate, and working in community outreach w/all walks of life from all over the country, it’s honestly hard to not get cynical. Props to Andrew and his team for showing the harsh reality, compassion of others and questioning the system by which we operate.

Zack Ruiz

without even saying anything, Andrew still manages to get yet another random freestyle lol

Stewart Harrington

I just got done telling my wife I wanted to buy property on Kensington 😂
