Here's our final installment of 'Philly Streets,' which covers late-stage history, from the 1970s until now, with particular emphasis on the ongoing gentrification of North-Central Philly as a result of Temple University and its shell companies. We also speak to a pair of homeless women living together on K&A.

I hope you guys liked this series. I'm going to move on from drug/homeless coverage for a bit to focus on the ongoing migrant crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.

If I'd estimate, I say that we'll drop a modified version of 'Philly Streets' on YouTube in mid-January .. so I'm curious - what parts did you guys like from this series? Was there any angles you think I forgot to cover? All of this feedback from you guys would be really helpful, because I want to make the final YouTube cut as impactful as possible.

Thanks for all your support. Don't shoot Tranq. Zines are on the way if you ordered one. Every single copy that was ordered was also signed by me!

Big Love,

Andrew C

P.S. - Big year ahead. Lotta new videos and other .. stuff .. dropping. I can't say much more, just trust that your support throughout 2023 will be rewarded tenfold.

Michael Hanlon

Love the series. Only part id change is the rushed historical perspective—the 100yr+ history of corruption in philly, while being valuable context, is better expressed by your interviews with residents who have lived there for 20+ years.

juan

Merry Christmas ya filthy animals

Eli Kloft

I'm curious to see how things are similar or different in the streets of Portland. Good idea taking a break from this topic for now to check out other news worthy things. Always enjoy your content

Lame Lade

I'm so sick of them literally always blaming white people for all their problems.

Martin Day

As long as you can show the conversation with the dealers in that house....that was so impactful...him saying he doesn't want them dead because then they can't give him anymore money....that bit especially

M h71498

What a Christmas gift hope everyone has a good day

Lame Lade

Is "cultural capital" just short for being a scummy criminal with no morals, no ethnics, and a filthy soul? Just robbing hard working people and acting like they're the victims. These people are the problem, not the victims. These people are the worst America has.

vapelordthenord

yep because a couple of people he shows generalizes a full state/ county get educated and actually experience the real world

Jes Scuderi

I hope Jessica finds peace. Her stories were tragic and y'all barely scratched the surface with her...

Matt Guastaferro

Holy fucking shit this is so terrifying . Thanks Andrew . I pray for these people

Nithin Rajkumar

lol, people with money and power are to blame—guess what? In America, those are mainly white people.

Colton

Really interesting to learn about how much real estate ties to these issues in big cities with crime and drug usage. I think that’s a topic that’s worth exploring more. Thanks for the content Channel 5!

channel5

No I refers to the cultural exports of a neighborhood or city, which is the non-criminal element

Trevor MacDonald

Damn fine job Andrew, I’m entirely satisfied with the job you’ve done engaging with these folks. speaking purely from my own experiences with and also the love I have for the hurt and destitute people in this word it’s an absolute blessing just to see you interview with kindness and compassion. More than that I appreciate your genuine curious nature. Your journalism heroes would be proud of you I think.

Ada Wofford

The cheerful ice cream truck music echoing through that hellscape is so eery. It's like something out of a Lynch film.

Jonathon Angell

Fuck, that discordant ice cream truck tune is such a surreal way to end this clip. Great interviews.

Matthias Berger

Has anyone else still not received their zine order? Or like any message about it at all?

Beckett Cullen

This was a fantastic series it reminds me a lot of what The Wire was talking about in the early 2000s with the criminals politicians and real estate developers all being in bed together great work as always from Channel 5. Also shout out to my boy Connor O'Malley he's restarting the Irish mob

res87

Eyyy NYU and Columbia been doing the same things in NYC. Village for NYU in the 70s and 80s and more recently in Harlem and other uptown neighbourhoods. Where the playbook at! (Mckinsey, Deloitte or E&Y probably has it)

Max M

The quality of your content has just been continually improving, man, great job to all the incredible hands at C5

Fire Flores

Going into the election year … what are the topics we may see the Channel 5 team cover ?

Adam Anderson

"the homeless" "Addicts" "Bums" People. The word you're looking for is people. Thanks for the genuine journalism. Keep up the good work.

Nathan Myers

God help us if Eugenics comes back into the picture to solve this. I guess abortion rights were the first step

Martina Bustos

Loved the actual history behind Philly from seeing to who settled there & the idea about building the homes for only white military family’s & pushing out the African Americans to more polluted & not so well areas

Jack Ayers

The ice cream truck ending made me cry for some reason. Great job.

Mark Dano

ice cream truck music was the cherry on top of this gates to hell sundae video

Ronnie Stelly

I like how you incorporated Sam Hyde into the real estate plan.

Nate Fifield

If you don’t want people to blame white people anymore then give a reason not to. Contribute to the community and help address the problems we’ve inherited from the past.

Miccalo

Thank you as always for your content. I appreciate you + 5 so much! Stay safe. Separately, the K&A woman's story is heartbreaking. None of my problems matter.

Ryan Todd

Pure journalism. excellent outro. This piece is why I am subscribed and consider Channel5 to be the most authentic form of modern American Journalism

Erika Edberg

This type of coverage of Kensington is so important. So many videos are surface level and I love that you explained the intersectional problems going on here.

The Hollywood Hater

Shout out to Connor O'Malley and the Irish Mob🫡

Austin

University of Tennessee is literally doing this exact same thing Temple is.

Pepega

Since you bring up the military aid to Ukraine, I was wondering wether those 113 billion could actually be reinvested into this problem or not. As far as I understood it the military aid consists of already existing equipment, although I might be completely wrong.

Quinn Johnson

Props to Andrew for getting cancelled and not going anti-woke 🫡

Gustavo

This was a great piece of work all around and I don’t think I have any criticisms to say about it. Great work Andrew! Please be safe when you go down to Mexico. Border towns are notoriously dangerous so watch your back and move as a group. Safe travels and can’t wait to see what you dish out next !

Hannahz

Glad im not the only one that thinks spending on these proxy wars while our own folks go ignored is unhinged. Thanks for interviewing women!

Joey W

Dope series Andrew. I think the one thing you missed was interviewing some hipster ass Philly cats on what their thoughts are. I’d love to hear from some nimbys on what they think, how they feel living blocks away from the gates of hell etc. it would also be cool to hear from an ex cop, someone who left the force in any of these cities because of corruption or their hands being tied from not being able to actually do anything.

SirLongButt

The contrast between the joyful tone of the ice cream truck music, laid over footage of a pained and dying neighborhood, is so deeply disturbing and powerful

Roma 2.0

Damn... Ultimately it's just a bunch of lost kids looking for someone to care and love them. We're all like that in some way, but these Kensington kids were just unlucky enough to end up there, being addicted. All we want is a bunch of Ice Cream and a friend.

Gary Eddy

I can help with audio probono

dickcacti

This was great. People have been talking about drugs and Kensington since the 90s and I’d wager nothing like this has been produced by any media outlet. To answer your question directly, if there is footage touching more on the shift from K&A Gang in 70s/80s to what it is today starting in the 90s. White flight by a criminal element isn’t really explored in these sort of stories. Props on the Schmidt jersey. One of the best mustaches in the business.

Sarah Stupsky

My only criticism is including the pit bull breeder. 😭 I don’t think advertising amateur “hobby” breeders is an ethical practice.

Greg

Incredible content..best on the internet..your the only pateron I support and it's well worth it

Mallory

For a second I though the one guy was him in this with the hat lol

Mallory

I really enjoyed the Philly series but liked that the SF series had organizations/people doing work to help what was going on to support in the videos as well. Sometimes there's not always an active solution happening, but figured I would share this. Could always research agencies supporting homeless women, etc. after viewing.

Mallory

(meaning the viewer could research, rather than Channel 5 having to present it)

Richard Springfield

Please go back to gemjam. Please go back to furfest. Please stop this stuff.

Lauren Chan

The ice cream truck music at the end is truly incredible filmmaking.

24-7 Watcher

Excellent content just getting better every video

Jake

You mentioned the gentrification in N Philly being pushed by Temple University, you might also want to mention the same sort of thing happening in West Philly being pushed by UPenn and Drexel (complete with similar university police patrols).

Cody Malcolm

Another typical Channel 5 masterpiece

Sammy V

Great reporting man

liam oreilly

14:`7, is that Sam Hyde? Where is that from?

Danielle Whelan

Dude, this is the best standard of journalism that I have ever encountered. It’s like the exact right balance of hunter thompson’s immersing himself in the world of the subject and theroux’s endless empathy and encouraging of the subject but, without baiting with leading questions to evoke the answers necessary for an engaging documentary, if that makes sense? Your point about how raising awareness of gentrification (plus all the other points) is probably futile seems true to me. But regardless, I think these films will be important at some point in the future. Please, keep doing what you are doing. Also- the point where the guy at the cross of A & K, says that him and his friend have college degrees, but point out that they are not the people targeted by the price fixing/gouging of gentrification because of their skin colour “no offence”, directed towards you really highlighted your authenticity to me. I could not have more respect for what you are doing.

Backwood

Swear same shit happening in edmotnon alberta they deff tryna lower the price of stuff. They just did a big homeless clean up other day as well

Joby Treegoob

One suggestion is forced subtitles for the rap portions. I'd like to know what they're saying but I don't have the energy or time to rewind and relisten over and over.

tony ravioli

This was a good end to the series! Could probably get rid of part 3 and this dudes dog breeding ad for the youtube upload tho

tony ravioli

Agreed, would have been great to get the transplants perspective or even some people from the city, university, or real estate developers

Joby Treegoob

Jesus that ending is haunting. Great job Andrew.

Joby Treegoob

As a lifetime Philly native and City worker in a related field, I need to say I truly wish this series was mandatory training for my staff and all new employees on my team.

I'gor Bogdanoff

definitely keep the tranq bros interview, also the interviews with the female homeless, that shits sad as fuck

Joby Treegoob

Sad to say that will never happen unless i don't care about being fired and losing my pension

justin kohl

I need that Michael Vick mini doc 😂

WeAreThe Q

Andrew is supplying Pulitzer-level content/journalism. It should not be understated. The raw depiction of people's lives and perspectives, along with his own takes on the topics are more informative than 95% of traditional media...maybe 98%

Zachary Smith

That is a great suggestion. I came to the comments to ask if anyone found that street dudes Instagram with the puppies. I listened back and could not find anyone with “bleedlovekennel_27” or “believeloveken”. I wish there was sub titles for a moment like that but Andrew doesn’t have to plug that guys insta. Anyway great suggestion.

Zachary Smith

Anyone know for sure the guy with the puppies insta??

Gaius

Merry Christmas Everyone! Stay safe out there.

Shelly

I loved the series and i am absolutely horrified by the scenes shown. The only thing that i wouldn't agree with is the false (in my opinion) choice between military help to Ukraine and solving the US drug crisis. I don't think that the government needs to choose between them and should actually do both.

ZBAF

This is wild.

2023-12-25 09:49:53 Unsubscribing (used to be a big fan since all gas no brakes) after hearing the RIDICULOUS argument of military aid (which is not actually cash and mostly armaments and storage stuff anyway, which when shipped off, creates jobs opportunities cause it needs to be replenished) to countries defending themselves being in way of ending deep-rooted drug problems. Have fun with the Trump presidency and with an actual boots on the ground situation which might come to pass after moving borders in Europe gets normalized. Ex-fan from Germany

The girls part is the most powerful in my opinion.

Laurence Roy

Hey there I’m a woman of color and an artist from Oakland California and I just watched these interviews and they shook me to my core and I know now that I need to find out a way to help you get these videos seen, and spread this story. I would like to say please look at what’s happening to us people.. us women..us humans. To our children. Please this is madness and I can’t stand for it anymore it hurts. I truly think we need to talk so we can figure out how to spread these videos and share this content to a bigger platform of people. Or to the people who can really make a difference. I wouldn’t mind doing the work and even going into these places and volunteering. Please I’d like to come together and come up with a solution of how to solve this problem? How I can help you help these people because this content needs to be seen by everyone. @tiffanythecreatrix

Swampy

Yeah helping to arm a conflict that might start ww3 is essential for the safety and security of Americans 🙄

Swampy

As an American from a place similarly broken and forgotten. I agree with them completely. Attempting to police the world from a point of moral authority we don’t have is hurting the public. Our military can’t even disclose its budget because of how in excess they are. They basically go to congress and say “we failed to keep track well enough to tell you where the money went”. We’re being robbed. I don’t care at all about Russia v Ukraine. I just see my people and place hurting, and people living in squaller in the one of the richest nations there has ever been. My high school had daily fights and a cop. It was built like a prison, and the education we received there was extremely inadequate. Also local infrastructure is crumbling or being privatized. Every generation is less prosperous than the last. We don’t see a dime of the war profit as every day Americans. All it does is raise the price of scrap metal and lower the price of gas. I’d like to see a little money spent to improve our homeland to make it worth defending. Hopefully I have helped you to understand the kind of place these sentiments come from if you have not been to America and seen how it is here.

Prince Diop

How about you tell the german government and Angela Merkel to donate to fucking Ukraine and stop making it seem it’s imperative that Americans cough up cash and weapons to secure european sovereignty you bum. I don’t see mass addiction and homelessness in fucking Hamburg. America already has so many problems to deal with, we need to fix issues within our borders first. Fuck off entitled cunt.

Prince Diop

You don’t even have to explain yourself to this Euro beggar. His own government is not doing shit for Ukraine!! What type of entitlement does one need to have to tell off others on how they should give.

Louis Toadvine

Typical entitlement of a central European that has everything he ever needed and more. Disagrees with one statement after years, and immediately cuts him off. Good riddance my man.

evcardin

Connor O'Malley sighting... Restart the Irish Mob

Baba Singh

So legit. What you said about gentrification schemes "empowering hyperlocal criminal gangs" really hit me. And when you said there's no way to stop gentrification, that was so real. This ain't some CBS fantasy news. I wish you could have gotten an interview with Krasner or some law enforcement. The fact that you are tracing this same gentrification pattern across the U.S. is what I feel Channel 5 has been about, is telling the story of what America is. When you bring American points of view together that legacy media keep separate, you guys are at the peak of your game. Thank you so much - we need this, before they tear us apart for good.

DokHome

Exactly, the oversimplified concept of "we are doing thing A so we cannot do thing B" does not work in politics, especially in an economic behemoth like the the US. The current drug crisis is not characterized by lack of material resources to fight it, but rather a lack of will and interest in doing so. I mean, as we saw with what's going on with gentrification at this point someone may even argue that there is more interest in keeping social degradation as it is rather than find a solution.

Eric Schoonover

The divide between the neighborhoods reminds me of Palo Alto and East Palo Alto in CA

Sarah Stupsky

I just wanted to add I think the ice cream truck ending is perfect. Really puts a bow on the humanity of these individuals.

Nathan Myers

?? I value life and I'm afraid of when people in power decide that the best way to eradicate addiction and homelessness is to control the gene pool. They literally already tried this in the mid 1900s by performing hysterectomies on "undesireables". Abortion rights are the gateway to full scale genetic control

Luke Ford

Masterful and powerful ending, excellent work.

SUNDERCORE

This shit is like Robocop.

Hunter

Those women at the end.. their stories break my heart. I wish there was something I could do for them.

Michael Maxwell

Looking at Comments: Agree that the dog-breeder and military aid jab should be cut out. Really loved the female perspective, it was very impactful and touch my heart. Also, loved the different perspectives that you bring from the dealers, users, health professionals, etc. If possible maybe get a community leader/politicians view, but I understand that, that may be tricky to incorporate. Really, love your work. Really excited for this migrant coverage since I live so close to the border and is always a hot topic. Even within the latin community

MrBo

Sam hyde?

Adam

Absolutely chilling story. There seems to be a clear pattern of events in every major American city and it’s only getting worse. I think a lot of young Americans who are going to these city colleges become so unaware of the environment around them and perhaps there in lies the solution. For profit university powerhouses need to be held accountable for the way they are shaping the city and inciting gentrification, they most certainly know what they are doing. Perhaps by interviewing some professors, who tend to live in the city as well and questioning them on these hard topics can lead to some change, or at the very least expose the inequality that their institution is providing. Idk tho

Cilv

your stories have gotten so much better. really appreciate the last two series. keep up the great work

Riley

Appreciate the Xmas drop fam

Devin Smith

Goddamn Andrew. Fucking did that one Forreal. You deserve the Hunter S. Thomson Award. If he were still with us, he’d undoubtably give it too you guys. We are are very lucky to have channel 5 news.

djdeutschebahn

Couldnt agree more. Or maybe frame it not like on or the other. I also like the different perspectives and with that, you can at the end create seamingless a complete picture ... which i easy to follow and challenges common narratives

Sydney Bothwell

One thing I really enjoyed about this series is how it highlights the politics in any given situation. Everyone’s got a finger to point with very little solutions themselves.

Joe Toomey

Also feels strangely cryptic and dystopian. Usually for us that sound is associated with childhood and summertime memories. Seeing and hearing the ice cream truck in this environment and context is really eye-opening and very, very sad.

Sarah Stupsky

You articulated my feelings so perfectly! I struggle to put my thoughts into words and youve captured it completely. Agree fully!

David Wojcicki

Andrew you gotta get a pop filter for your mic...

Oliver Sangster

Amazing final shot. The juxtaposition of the ice cream truck music (traditionally associated with summer fun/happiness) with the shot of the street is powerful. I'd recommend you definitely use that in your final YT cut

HamBaked

The military aid jab is fully justified, time for our politicians to focus on the country they were elected to protect and serve.

J G

doorin covid

Grace Kugler

I've worked in behavioral health and child SA is way more common than people think. No one wants to go there and talk about it, so everyone thinks they are alone.

Grace Kugler

Side note- you should visit pain management clinics, especially in florida

Moriah

Enjoyed the series! Love watching your progression. A lot of mixed feelings about the subjects, plenty to think about.

bat kyak

What a finale!! Round of applause! You should put it out in full!

Jonas Le Loup

This is one of the greatest reports on some issues of the cities and general urban development in the US right now I've seen in a long time! This reminds me more and more of the apartheid like in south africa, which originated in colonialism. Except this time, however, it seems more subtly rooted in general econonomic (instead of purely racist) interests to justify this kind of segregation. Really terrifying to see this happening so unrestrained. I'm really worried that this kind of development will also take place in Europe within the next few decades, if there won't be a drastic change in politics.

Nolan Wilder

Thank you for this series. I thought it was well done and very insightful the ice cream song at the end with the shot of people using is haunting. I will never hear that song the same.

Adeezy

Love that you made a return. It sucks how our government treats the poor and disenfranchised people in this country. Instead of providing them help, they criminalize everything, and blame them for being unable to alleviate themselves of their condition

Channing C.

Andrew is real one for real.

Benjamin Bradshaw

about seven minutes in was basically "The Villa, at Kenny's House"

Benjamin Bradshaw

I'm sure that you'll have to cut some of it out for the final version, but I think it would be ideal if you cut out none of it. It was all excellent journalism, and I'm not sure that I could preferentially select scenes out of this.

Nas

Thanks a lot. This is civic. Sorry can’t find the words. Just hoping a lot of folks will see this and that America will get better soon.

Sara

Thank you Andrew.. You are on track here, big pharm is an axel of evil that works along side with big food to keep us sick and weak while our gov funnels money to proxy wars. Its disgusting.

Wesley Hamilton

I’ll shout it from the mountaintop- the only journalism I can take seriously. And the absurdist reality of the ice cream truck at the end…truly sobering for lack of a better word. Bravo.

RD

I think it would be good for Andrew to actually explain how this kind of funds allocation works. Not as simple as take the funds from one place and send it to another. For example with the Ukraine stuff. The $113 billion isn’t cash it’s $113 billion worth of existing weapons, much of which is slated to be decommissioned which only costs more money. It’s like when a bagel place has the option to throw away the bagels leftover from the day or donate it. In this case we “donate” the weapons to Ukraine. That being said understanding the system is important if we seek to change it. We’re clearly not doing the best for our own citizens

Darien

All the love and all the power man, you doing good work out here fr.

Simon

MDE never dies

Sean

Man, ending with that whacked out Ice Cream truck jingle in the middle of that hellscape was next level dystopia. Kudos on the editing

John Fitch

Yeah the ending was great. I would love to hear some sort of interview with Philly LE. Some additional perspectives might be good to hear even if it’s just more bs putting them on record at least.

SanestFlexican

Great work as always everybody.

Magic Plants

dystopian ice cream hellhole. I really hope people find a way to get clean. I have 7.5 years clean so I know it's possible. I was hardcore too.

chicomcqb

I've followed this topic very closely online for years, seen all the graphic content I can find to get an understanding of the reality people are experiencing - and what I would probably also be experiencing if my circumstances were any less fortunate. I can say with 100% certainty, that as dire and harrowing as I already know that life is in these situations, nothing has ever moved me so urgently to tears and disgust as the last scene here. Thank you for what you're doing for people and their loved ones, Andrew. This quality of journalism is precisely what many are unwittingly referring to when they use the term "Lord's work."

chicomcqb

As an aside, I believe the commentary made on the US military's poor spending habits is a very human, emotional conclusion to reach. Whether it be factually correct or otherwise, our friends and families are being consistently exposed to mundane horror with little to no assistance (and often recognition) from the powers that be. It's only logical that we're aware of the moral discrepancy in that.

Jacob

The absolute dystopian soundtrack of the ice cream truck next to an alley of addicts. Wild.

hoopoebird

This is your best segment- great examination of the context and systemic issues that allow viewers to see the bigger picture surrounding the addiction and poverty. Your interview with the women ending with the ice cream was horrifying as well as heartwarming. Fantastic work.

Sarah Burstock

That ending was extremely powerful. Thank you for sharing the women’s stories as well

2023-12-26 20:28:58 I joined to binge through your Patreon content, with intent to unsub for a while until there was new content, but this Philly series has been some of the most meaningful and hard hitting journalism I've ever witnessed. Keep up the incredible work, Andrew! Oh, and the one thing I might cut is the guy plugging his 'hobby' breeding hustle, no need for that. The rest, I feel, should stay.

I love the seriousness and I love the coverage that you're doing. It honestly should be the norm for all journalism. That being said, the clip of Connor O'Malley when you were talking about Irish gangs in the beginning absolutely killed me, lmao

Richard Springfield

It took me a couple days to watch this. I'm tired of this bleak reality, and your content used to be such s bright spot in my life. I understand you've shifted away from humor, and I'm appreciative of your focus. I still will always miss the old days, and hope you decide to include some levity in your future projects. That ending was truly fucked in a dystopian way. What the fuck is going on in this life? I feel like we're circling to toilet bowl.

Elizabeth Navarrete

The video ended , but the ice cream truck music kept going then. A little longer than anticipated, but the city shots caught my attention. It made me feel a certain way especially as it was right after the women’s interviews. So much emotion behind their words. I hope they heal & stay safe for a long time.

Ben LeMoine

I haven’t got my zine yet or even tracking info, anyone else in the same boat?

Lade Den

Does anyone know the artists name? I can't find "big banks kenzo"

Shirley

As someone from Philly who has lost family to drugs - thank you so much for covering and bringing attention to this crisis. So powerful, thank you Andrew!!

Jeremy

The artistic touch overlaying the raw content is C5. This was so compelling, so moving. I do hope content like this over the next 5-10 years helps create generational change.

Hunter Vandel

Great video and love your work man!!!

steeldioxide

Love your brand of journalism. Real, raw, and respectful. Keep it up, AC

rawr

My addiction started when I found my moms pain meds (oxy) when she had cancer. Only by the grace of god I'm 60 days clean and have no desire to return to that life.

Paul

Very well done!

Babbitt

Keep that ending

Gerald Adams

Andrew is the truth. Props to the editors and camera crew. You guys rip

Kim

Yooo, I’ve met and talked with a couple of women who also have been forced into sexual situations from cops, never heard from that scenario again until this video. I cannot fathom it, I 100% believe them.

Aaron M

Beautiful, sobering, and informative.

Elijah Valencia

the distorted ice cream music laid over the shots of Kensington was beautifully horrifying

Chris Griffin

Such important work that more people need to see. I'd like to see interviews of those that work in city residential real estate. Curious what they have to say about these gentrification strategies that work in cahoots with the law and city government. Specifically, I want to see how they try to deny it.

DW

Great call out Jacob! I rewatched that video just last week and still missed the reference til I saw your comment.

DW

You had the RV for AGNB so how about a Channel5 Ice Cream truck!

Ryan

Andrew, we really appreciate the deep dive and education... This is vital work you do. And I think it shines thru how much it matters to you esp since this is your original turf you're talking about, Philly. So sad what these hyper capitalist racist white people are allowed to get away with, and the insane inequality and contrast next to each other. That's one of the main issues in America now, among many, simply how out of control the rich and the corps are these days. 😅😢

myles

Wow, that ending really struck a tone, the fucked up ice cream truck music and the fucked up streets of Kensington. What a journey this series has been. You really showed it from a perfect perspective in terms of the reality of life there. Time and time again this channel makes me open my eyes and leaves me with no words. Inspiring to say the least.

Growyourownveggies

I’d be interested in hearing from the community organizers in Kensington and their work to stop the university and its shells.

Dave

Bro this was a crazy series. Thanks for the dedication to finishing this series. The interview with the two ladies at the end was heartbreaking.

Noron

Definitely keep the slow pacing at the very end with the ice cream music, hell make it longer even. It really made me feel like I couldn't leave.

jared carson

This truly is great documentary. I’m surprised how coherent so many of these peoples stories are. Homelessness could happen to anyone.

Adam

Would have been very beneficial to get input from reputable community activists and/or academics instead of just the insights of some blockboys who while good-intentioned clearly aren't the most informed on all the different aspects contributing to the situation in Kensington. I thought you struck a good balance between sources in the SF series, this one not as much. Overall I enjoyed the series but I would also love to see more classic content of interviewing weirdos for laughs and finding random freestyle rappers.

Insightful, real, raw coverage. I'm such an avid fan of Andrew's journalism because they show that things are complex, have history, and multiple perspectives. Keep up the great work. One POV that would've been interesting to cover is a real estate agent/planner and their vision for South (and North) Kensington.

Sküch

Gods work, the best coverage I’ve seen that also isn’t blatantly trying to profit off the “ content “ most people are seeking, Thanks again.

Max

The ice cream truck music mixed with the abuse, is something out of a horror film vibe

unsui

big icecream cant keep getting away with this

I fucking hate governments

Sydney

You are an incredible filmmaker. Wow. Especially at 14:00. Absolute gold. Please ensure that you put 14:00-17:00 into your YouTube final cut - incredible. This is an incredible documentary. Please share as much as you can of their stories. They deserve to be heard. Thank you for the female perspective.

Matthias Bernsdorf

Your analysis is on point, but despite my agreement I think it’s more valuable to remain an impartial observer rather than inserting your own viewpoints. Keep up the good work Andrew and the crew

Alex

I like your content Andrew, but I don’t particularly like when you start putting your own opinions into content. Like for example “it’s ridiculous that the government is sending aid to foreign countries” and the Ukrainian support comes up. It seems like you start narrativizing the video, which personally I don’t particularly like. Especially when those two issues are unrelated. Keep up the good work. Just my two cents

Kevin Lacasse

It's a well known fact that Connor O'Malley was head of the mob in the Kensington area at the height of their activity.

Rachel Swan

THANK YOU for interviewing women. THANK YOU for getting into the real shit that fuels addictions. Please don't forget to interview women of color.

Snerple Tiger

seeing connor omalley and mde clips in this gave me whiplash lmao

Narosa

That was extremely powerful

Alex Bielovich

That ice cream scene at the end was so poignant.

Jovaras Skanas

what's with the shade on the Ukraine support? Nice whataboutism, both problems can be real, and need support at the same time. You think the innocent lives in Ukraine, and whatever comes next (the Baltics, Poland, Moldova) should Ukraine fall matters less?

sidank

Yes. Ukraine invasion was completely avoidable but the crooked powers that be wanted to make some fucking profit. Billions and trillions are being spent but no money for fucking Americans?

Jovaras Skanas

By crooked powers do you mean the putin who sees himself as an emperor and thought that he would sweep through Ukraine and take it over in 3 days, but was (thank god) wrong? Cause that’s the one who started this and is the only one to blame

sidank

Bro American Cities are turning into Real life Gotham city. It is depressing, I truly believe these are the side effects of 2008 Recession and Covid.

Will Tuff

People also don't seem to realise that they're giving equipment, not money. We're just shown the (overvalued) monetary value of the equipment that is given.

Ejazzle

the only thing thats happened since 2008 is the rich have gotten richer and the poor have gotten pooring. Theres never been a larger wealth gap than there is now. They kicked the can in 2008 and are trying to kick the can again now. Its going to all blow up in their faces soon enough and I can't wait.

Ejazzle

No shade against ukraine/israel, just facts pointing out the governments willingness to help in war while completely ignoring their own citizens that are in dire need of help. If you are a tax paying US citizen that should raise concern for you. I want my tax money to go to help people HERE first and then overseas second.

That backwards, racist, counter-productive, loser mentality is why you will never ever ever become a successful American. You'll spend the rest of your life a racist loser blaming white people for your personal failings. Because that's what racist losers do.

Tanner

What's the name of the rapper at 12:38?

Heartbleed

@Will Tuff Yeah and how much tax dollars are spent to build said equipment in the first place?

sidank

Sorry to break your bubble. But the rich will not even get scratched. Only the people who just have enough and are barely hanging over the ledge will fall off and will have to bear the brunt of the society falling apart. Most revolutions in history have failed and situation has gotten worse that it was before. You can read the french revolution, Russian revolution etc.

Thanks for including the content warning before the homeless women interview. In the final YouTube version, it would be helpful if you could include a timestamp or something so that viewers will know how far to skip ahead.

I really hope you go and checkout dr Carl hart with this content!

Jennifer Heintz

I think what's missing from this series vs. the san francisco series is the harm reduction angle. A friend of mine runs Savage Sisters and is doing amazing work in Kensington. But also, your San Francisco series paints a really clear picture of how the tech bubble totally fucked the city. The Temple angle here feels a little iffy? (I'm one of the caucasians on the other side of lehigh)

Blood gang John Wayne

I thought it was weird to paint the city as evil bad guys taking away their childhood memories. What do you want. They were mad about all the crack houses so the city found funding to rehab them into student housing. They can't just magically fix everything. The government is normal ass people playing wack a mole with problem areas. Andrew really can't understand the "unsafe" aspects surrounding the drug trade? And finally of coarse they arrest dealers before users. I don't even understand what they are mad about with that one.

Music Colin

ya its like the Erie dark horror movie soundtrack to this whole zone

Jennifer

The city's answer to fixing the problem is importing rich white people? Wow, what a sad solution that multiple ivy league educated white men came up with. It's no wonder they get paid so much yearly and are so highly valued by society. And to the imported rich white people who move into these new homes that replaced a neighborhood market, or 50 year old family home, shame on you, go somewhere else, you're apart of the problem as well!!!!!

_zero

Please give me the michael vick story

Austin Ivy

Fuck, that Ice cream music at the end is so fitting. Hyper creepy music non stop playing, all in order to make money off the locals. It’s the perfect metaphor for whats going on there.

Nick Wrazen

Living in Levittown pa the part you did on there was really cool. Everything else was amazing. Getting the male & female addicts point of view of living on the streets, to the 2 brothers who cut all the drugs, to the point of view on the people who have lived there forever. You really got all angles of what’s going on in k&a. The only thing I wish you would do in these videos that could make it better is doing a background on the city how you mentioned Michael Vick. Doing a few sports stories on cities you go to or just like history of the cities like how Philly has a long history with independence hall and all the politics we have I just feel it could add a nice touch to these videos. Regardless the videos are amazing and only have room to grow

Not Oscar

Man this is incredible work, and I hope you skyrocket even further. The last few mins with the women were heartbreaking, but it was endearing in a bittersweet way to see how happy they were to grab an ice cream together. Not for the sake of being seen as an angel or for ad revenue or whatnot, but to enjoy an ice cream. That warmth is something they so scarcely feel in the environment they're in every single day. This is some real ass shit, and I do hope Andrew realizes that he's a saint for how mindful he is of the humanity that everyone holds.

Nic soroka

Please do more stuff like this and not crip Mac content

frankly man, all your coverage just makes me wana help people out. you cover a lot, it seems there could be a platform of ideas to remediate some of these problems through your network. kinda related to the mention of tax dollars spent on war vs domestic.. there is a lot of cultural influence here and i wonder if there is a way to surface more of the rational takeaways that may seem obvious but arent being discussed when it comes to elections. i just cant believe there isn't even easily accessible evaluations on these politicians... with so much information available now, it seems like covering something like sf and kensington would be easy to directly tie to the volume of the voting discussion for local politicians, as well as community discussion for spending tax dollars. kinda rambly but, thx for your coverage

Dylan Shakib

These educational segments should be put into schools asap. I know a lot of schools do health classes where they discuss drugs, etc and your videos would be more impactful than any slideshow of statistics ever can be. Talk about the history and the root causes, but catch minds/eyes with the shocking videos/pictures. say no to drugs doesn't work 100%, but adding such a powerful why might help. Could really be impactful on young people (-from young person)

BlindFaith

Add a line showing the stock prices of pharmaceutical companies on that black screen at the end

Vasco Varelas

The ice cream music makes this even more sinister. It is HELL, profitable hell seems like, the human cost don't matter to our politicians and developers of a city spiralling

BlindFaith

Love the adding some narrative/perspective/speculation, keeps the wider position in focus and hopefully can sneak into people's echo chambers in their minds

BlindFaith

Do it. If you feel inspired just do it. don't form a committee, just do it and put it out and people will join if they are attracted/right fit

Fuck these wars

Jesus Christ

One thing I would push back on is the idea that building new "homogenized" buildings is a bad thing. Cities cannot stay frozen in time. One of the biggest causes of the nationwide housing crisis is the fact that we've made it damn near impossible to tear down old housing and build newer, denser housing in its place, especially in suburban areas with some of the highest property values in the country. Cities have to change, including and especially in their physical form. It's the biggest way to prevent displacement when wealthier individuals start moving into an area. The culture of a place ultimately comes from it's people, not the buildings or the physical form a place. The only way to prevent displacement of the people is to build more housing than there is demand.

alethea

Thank you for specifically covering the women’s stories. Oftentimes I feel their voices get washed out in the grand scheme of drugs, gangviolence, and the general troubles of urban America, so I’m very grateful you are able to give them the space to speak and feel safe. They are smart women, and my heart breaks for them.

I'm late to this, but I think one thing you missed in this series was talking to some Temple University people. I don't think what Temple University is doing is right, but normally you try to interview people on all sides of whatever topic you're talking about, and I think you missed out here

Julio Acosta

Totally agree with you JC coming from Strong Towns, but watching this video makes me want to burn it all to the fucking ground. Fuck these developers playing real life Monopoly. Implement a Land Value Tax immediately so that that the money spreads to the community.

That ice cream scene at the end left me feeling a certain way

Just wanted to tell the team thank you for putting the whole doc on YouTube. I had been planning to sign up for your Patreon, but that final, surreal scene of Liberty Ice Cream serving treats to everyone made me realize I needed to help support your team in what you do. Keep up the good work showing what real life is like. Like was said in the video, no matter where you sit on the political spectrum, our governments are failing us. And the "leadership" just doesn't care.

Luke

In the Philly Streets video you showed a video of what looks like police shooting rifles at a housing project or apartment building. Does anyone know what the f—k this is, or where or when? Andrew, I appreciate you covering more of the historical context surrounding the contemporary events you cover, and suggest you weave even more history into your videos to tell the full picture. Keep up the great work, Channel 5!

Chuck Arnold

Fascinating insight. I used to work in addiction treatment (videography) and heard the same story again and again. When the opioid crackdown happened, the time release was integrated into the pills instead of as a seal, they also got more expensive and more difficult to acquire, which moved many addicts to street drugs. I will take issue, with the Ukraine comparison. I do realize that it is difficult to see money going to foreign aid when there are such issues at home, but comparatively, I would look at the amount of money in foreign aid compared to what is spent domestically. I don't know that it's a problem that more money can solve. We can't even get people in the US to agree that addiction is a disease, and get insurance to pay for addiction treatment. And if they are covered, they're often sent to less than reputable places for treatment. Not to mention the people who don't want treatment, their hierarchy of needs is whack, and they continue a cycle of addiction. It's not a simple problem of enough money. There are many good people, including those in our current administration who work long and hard on these issues every day. There is also the fact that it's a human problem, maybe not the government's to solve. It's one of our society's biggest challenges, but it's a better comparison to say the fact that billionaires exist in our society, that there are people who have homes they don't even live in and there are homeless than to draw a comparison with a government sending aid to a country fighting and dying for their autonomy. That aside, Great reporting.

Tony Montana

I really like the historical angle quite a lot

K F

You gotta check out the border between case western in Cleveland and "east Cleveland". Very similar to what you're describing here with Temple.

Wylcey Keep

@KF reminded me of euclid ave up past the cemetery yuuup. they aint pushing development into little italy tho I wonder why-te

Gautier Dekeyne

There's one last side of the story that's missing, the cops. They're mentioned all the time, appear some, yet we don't hear a word from them in the whole series.

Tri M

Ice cream trucks looking for opium addicts on the come down lmao

Douglas macleod

The ice cream truck at the end was a really deft move by Andrew and the documentarians (not to say it wasn't a genuine gesture of kindness). The music and scene of them all touching cones was harrowing, it's another consumer product that demonstrates the symbiosis of multiple 'wheelers and dealers' in these areas of society. Another business making money off of the degredation and destruction of others, all wrapped up in a cheerful jacket. Very dark. It reinforces the storytelling conveyed throughout the documentary, leaving me with a miserable sense of resignation about this devasting societal reality.

Tri M

Hey it’s really cool that you care to show people this stuff Andrew I was using fentanyl for 3 and a half years smoking it with my own dad and I’m sober 5 months now so it’s cool to see people care I’m from Monterey California Salinas area, you should go check that place out

William Jett

I cried when u bought everyone ice cream

William Stone

The ice cream truck outro is fuckin Oscar worthy omm

Jacob

Be fucking grateful for what you have folks.

Gabe

I think journalism should shed more light on the good history of places that are covered, so people have an example of what good communities look like alongside the reality of our situations.

James

Makes no sense to say that gentrification erases the culture of the place. It creates a new culture, often that blends with the old. It's how culture develops.

James

That is absurd. You think K&A are portals of death, go spend a week reporting from Kherson. Those people are being shelled daily by Russian munitions. Ukrainians in occupied territory are &&&&d, tortured, and murdered. Babies too. Think about that. What that lady said about her mother tricking her, that except its at gun point, sanctioned by an army. Soldiers &&&&&g little boys and girls in front of their mother and father. Then being executed. Then the same for the mother in front of the father. Then the father is liquidated as well. You think about that next time before you deign to express disgust about the life saving and changing work that we have done in Ukraine in helping them protect themselves. And to call it a proxy war is the height of ignorance. We can help nations around the world for .2% of our annual GDP and also help Americans, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. We could house every single homeless person in America for .1% of our annual BUDGET. Not even GDP, just the revenue from the federal government alone, not even including state and local governments. Instead of demonizing the good we've done around the world and implying, even unwittingly, that it is done at the expense of Americans, ask yourself this; why is it that we have the resources to deal with this problems, at least theoretically, but we don't? The uncomfortable truth that "blaming it on Ukraine and Israel" doesn't address is that there are significant portions of the population who don't see addicts as humans. They want them in misery so they pass away quicker. They want them out of sight. They don't want to help, they see themselves as superior, and that reinforces it in their minds. We spend 25 billion dollars, roughly, on the homeless every year. Year after year. Don't tell me that because we send old military equipment to Ukraine that we don't use represents valuing the lives of people around the world more than Americans. It's hard to put into words how infuriatingly offensive it is to question the work we are doing abroad that is literally keeping millions of people alive, safe and healthy, as a scapegoat for a problem that hasn't been solved because, at the end of the day, Americans as a whole don't want to have it solved, at least not in the positive ways that we think of when we talk about a solution. And that lack of will, that has nothing to do with us helping Ukraine. Absolutely nothing.

James

You say "no matter where you are on the political spectrum, we can all agree this needs to be solved, now" but that simply isn't true. Overwhelming numbers of people, primarily from the hardcore religious fundamentalists in our country, don't agree with that, in the slightest! Is it really that hard to comprehend that there are people out there that genuinely don't care for others? That see it as a moral failing and an indictment of character? So drop the naive presumption that this is some bipartisan issue, it's not, it's a cultural issue with people not caring enough for others. It's that simple. And unfortunately, you can't wave a wand and make that change, nor can you blame government for the failings of our socio-cultural teachings on ethics and morals regarding the vulnerable in our society.

Danilo Kastratovic

what america and americans does outside of its borders is far from feeding people and keeping them safe instead it is the complete opposite. you should check some wiki about the wars in yugoslavia back in 90s and whats going on now in gaza

Spinoza

The ice cream truck does put the last dark layer of sugar coated capitalism on top. But it punctuates the innocence, child like hope and inner child that still exists inside the addicts and by extension all of us. The anguish we feel is reality imo. It’s poetic af As for people feeling resignation or a type of way from the ending, I think beyond sleuthing, documentarians will take a point of view as a conclusion or bring everything together for a societal/otherwise solution based ending or further sleuthing to uncover an ultimate source or culprit, helping the viewer make actionable sense in their head for comfortability. But idk, shit be like this though, it feels true in the sense that the resignation or hopelessness we feel can be comparable to the addict and their situation.

Michael Todd

The final scene is so haunting

Cole Ford

Final scene brought me to tears. Incredible work, man.

Jacob Pichette

This breaks your heart so many lost people and the government only lets it continue.

Nice

There isn't a single entity to blame for this problem. What we're seeing here is the result of capitalism, greed, racism, mental illness, poverty, lack of housing, lack of decent-paying work, etc. We as a nation can only keep applying bandaids to temporarily solve issues for so long before something disastrous occurs.

Avy

ngl hearing the olden ice cream truck music alongside these absolute horror stories makes it altogether fucking scary.

Eileen Dover

Any contracts put out on you guys now that this video has been on YouTube for a while? haha
