Howdy friends.

The RWBY video is nearly done. I'm looking to have it out for patrons in just a couple more days. I'm really happy with it, I've managed to cut and pace it from almost three hours to around two and a quarter. The fun thing about making long videos is every point and joke has to justify itself way more than a 20-minute video, where you can kind of get away with padding it to 30. Counter-intuitively, this is probably the most tightly-paced video I've done.

Normally towards the end of a huge video I'm feeling burned out, but strangely, I'm energised - I can't wait to have something out in public after so long, and feel pushed to get more things out as soon as possible and prove that I'm 'back', as it were. I never left but it certainly seems like it, lol.

The video focuses largely on the show's creation and progress over the first three seasons, and there's another video, analysing the animation of the late Monty Oum, the show's original creator, which should be out soon after. I wanted to talk more about his work in specific but I thought it worked better pacing-wise as a separate video. Once that's out I'll have a poll for $10 patrons on what to do next, be it cover the rest of the show, or something else entirely. Initially I intended to cover the entire show in one video but it ended up threatening to be far too long, and the pre- and post- Monty eras function so differently that it felt like a good idea to segment it like that. I have written most of that second video already and recorded a bunch of it too, so if you want me to make that second part right away, it shouldn't take anywhere near as long as this one did.

I have a bonus video for patrons coming ASAP as well. which consists of a segment I wrote about Trigun, which I really liked writing about, and then decided pretty late in the process to cut from the video for pacing reasons. Ironically, it's the first idea I had to put in a video about RWBY, even five years ago when I first started wanting to write a video about this show, and it turned out to be one of the darlings I had to kill in order to make the video work as a whole. Writing videos is fun!!! And also deeply painful.

Since this video covers a fairly serious and pressing issue, namely systemic racism and how it's handled in media - by way of addressing the show's failure to cover it - I've decided to donate any ad revenue from this video to a cause related to the current events in the US. I'm still looking at where exactly I should contribute to, so please let me know if you have a suggestion. I want to throw my weight behind something specific that needs attention right now.

In the meantime, here's a video I made to show fellow youtuber UpIsNotJump how to use after effects by recreating one of his shots. If you want me to record more weird stuff like this and put it on Patreon I really loved making this so I'll try to take some requests.

Would it be difficult to put together an entire behind-the-scenes video of an upcoming project? Perhaps even something from Kat's perspective, as a "look what it's like to work with Harris" style or something similar to CGPGrey's patreon videos where he rewatches the video with his subscriber's only stream and comments on different parts. A bit similar to some of your retrospective videos. I realize saying *just* anything when it's someone else's time/effort that you're *just*ing is kinda a dick move, but I do think it could just be a stream where you watch the video and share whatever tangets come to mind. If done in a very low-stress no-prep fashion, it could actually take a small(ish) period of time to make a video that I can only imagine a lot of patrons would really love to see.

As someone who only knows RWBY through its headlined drama, I'm excited to learn more about the show. As far as causes go, the NAACP legal defense fund is an excellent service to donate to in my opinion https://www.naacpldf.org/

Hey man, really looking forward to this video. I'm stoked that it's gonna be so long! This is a good place to donate to and has been suggested to me many times. The Bail Project. They're helping anyone who needs bail to be paid for, including a lot of the protesters in the US who were unrightfully (is that a word?) incarcerated. https://bailproject.org/

I know it's the last day of pride month now so it won't be pride anymore, but it would be great if you donated it to a fund or organization dedicated to helping out black and indigenous trans folks. Not that it needs to be pride for you to help out queer folks, but y'know, the timing kind of worked out.

Anonymous

I'm not sure what I'm more excited for now, RWBY or this trimmed Trigun segment

Anonymous

If possible, could you donate to a local rather than national organization? Casey's suggestion is actually great because the money does go directly to bail funds, but otherwise a singular mutual aid fund or project would be so much better than a huge org. Check out @ survivepunish on Twitter or @ prisonculture for some great orgs.

I second The Bail Project. Other great organizations are: - The Equal Justice Initiative, which works to end mass incarceration, excessive punishment, and racial inequality. https://eji.org/ - The Okra Project, which brings home cooked, healthy, and culturally specific meals and resources to Black Trans People. Also appropriate for Pride month! https://www.theokraproject.com/

I love this extra vid fyi! Cool to know ur process

Also, as an American, I really appreciate you helping out good causes here. The racist violence, attacks on protestors, and lack of government accountability has been horrifying. But seeing the solidarity protests and support from around the world has been incredibly moving and inspired me to keep fighting against intolerance and inequity. So again, thanks!

So obsessed with new content that I'm watching a tutorial for software I don't use

I would totally watch more unscripted, off-the-cuff tutorials.

Hi yo! Great stuff as always.

The second half of the show is when it gets really really really bad, so I'll know I'll be voting for it to get done right after.

Looking forward to the RWBY video! In your quick AE video - you can also precomp your quark-text layer things together, adding yet another layer of control (you can have adjustments/effects/ whatever inside the precomp, and then have the ability to apply more on top of those in your main timeline)! For simple things, you can still nest layers together, which will keep your timelines organized if you compulsively and constantly clean up your layers like me. In regards to donations, I will echo Bail Project as well, though any of the posted suggestions are good causes.

I’ve never seen RWBY but I’ll still watch your long video about it.

Anonymous

I was nervous about the rwby video, but hearing that you are going to address the only Major criticism I have of the show, the entire faunus thing, I’m excited for it

Anonymous

My anticipation for the Trigun segment is through the roof.

Anonymous

Yeah we definitely wanted to make it a priority to reach local, smaller organizations for whom the funding would make a tremendous difference to their operations. This is super helpful— thanks!

Man, one thing I’ve learned from doing research on RWBY fandom is that the direction of the second half of the series is the MOST divisive topic I’ve ever SEEN. People will ferociously defend the idea that the second half is amazing and “where it really gets good” or that it totally goes downhill and wastes all its promise.

I'm excited to watch any video you put out, and I'm glad it's supporting a possible number of good causes!

Anonymous

I'm so excited! Tear it to shreds!

Also, Trigun is a seriously underrated anime. I'm biased, as it was the first one I ever watched. It was mostly so I could spend time with the anime club and get close to a friend but the show really impressed me and I've always wanted to watch it again. Now I'll have to find it for sure.

As someone who was real into the idea of RWBY at the start and just kept marveling at how close they came to decent ideas before veering off again into incredible misses, I honestly can't wait for this video because I think you'll be able to verbalize what's been bugging me about it

LlamaMaster

Looking forward to this! I think splitting it into two videos is a smart idea, and in terms of where to set the cut-off for them, the shift from Monty Oum's (RIP) era to post-Monty Oum era is probably the best possible choice.

Anonymous

looking forward to the new video! i would watch more behind the edit type stuff.

Keef Baker

You should totally do a video about boiling an egg. Even if... In fact, no, ESPECIALLY if you have no idea how to do it.

Keef Baker

But yeah, now actually knowing for a fact that RWBY is BWM (bum... see what I did there? I'm so clever) I'm looking forward to this!

The Bail Project and Black Visions Collective are good ones to donate to I've heard.

The two things I've rewatched when the pandemic isolation overwhelms me are (1) The Good Place, and (2) your videos. I'm excited to have a long video coming, and I'm very glad to hear you haven't burnt out making it, because you are precious and deserve to be happy.

The Homeless Black Trans Women's fund defs needs consistent support, and is reputable. I think the BLM bail fund has seen a lot more attention and support, and reifies the legal systems exploitation of funds imo. Here's the link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/homeless-black-trans-women-fund I think you could contact Jesse Pratt López personally for her PayPal too if gofundme take a larger cut than PayPal

Also another idea: Leftist Memes For Vanguard Teen's have a solidarity fund here. It's unequivocal mutual aid https://www.facebook.com/103722311045293/posts/138336237583900/?d=n

How utterly inaccessible is this going to be for people whose only knowledge of RWBY is the 5 seconds of looking at search results I've just done?

Anonymous

Would wait for this video with great anticipation, then watch it several times in a row!!!!!

Glad you will be using the money for a good cause. You already know my sad feels on the subject, but I confess this section: "Monty Oum, the show's original creator, which should be out soon after. - Initially I intended to cover the entire show in one video but it ended up threatening to be far too long, and the pre- and post- Monty eras function so differently that it felt like a good idea to segment it like that." Has me extra concerned given while Monty Oum did come up with the original concept, he developed it with the shows writing director pair of Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross from the ground up & specifically sought them out because he wanted their skill as writers for he was unsure he could create a plotted story. Adding to that, the post Monty Oum era, while different animation wise for obvious reasons and most definitely impacted for his tragic absence was, you know, to varying degrees planned out before his tragic passing. IE, Salem was apparently the fifth characters they created, they’ve got a bible. So while there were things irrevocably lost with Monty Oum’s passing,I tend to find people who frame this kind of divide as being a thing are acting like Monty Oum was the sole visionary behind the project while Miles & Kerry just slapped their names on it & then “Ruined” it because (Insert reason here) failing to understand that what they wanted/expected (Adam was always a piece of shit regardless of what his fans cooed up in their head-canons for example) was never what the writers, including Monty Oum, planned. Beacon was always meant to fall, the team always meant to split, Adam was always garbage, and Ironwood always a “Benevolent” dictator who couldn’t be trusted. Would things be different had he not sadly passed? Certainly, though for far more important reasons than a show. But barring the animation likely being tighter, chances are much of the plot & characters likely would have stayed the same, though be it maybe with some added ‘flourishes’ or new ideas that might ave occurred to Monty Oum, but not knowing what those are, blaming the show for not manufacturing ‘Monty-Esc’ flourishes like the Maidens in-between V2 & 3, seems unreasonable to me and as the show would have likely been broadly the same, save maybe a bit smoother... Yeah not really a fan of the narrative you seem to be trying to build. Not having watched the video I can’t say much obviously, but based on everything you’ve said leading up to this, that and more is the general vibe I get, sorry.

Yaaaay cool!

Oh and yeah, I vote second part right away.

Anonymous

The National Bail Fund Network might be a good donation option if you haven’t chosen a place for ad revenue to go yet.

Anonymous

The Southern Poverty Law Center does a lot of great work. I donate to them about once a year at least.

J. Francis

I don't know anything about RWBY, having not even heard of it until you announced this would be the next video, so I'm very excited to learn!

Anonymous

Real heads know that Monty Oum's masterpiece was Haloid

Anonymous

I made myself watch through the first 3 seasons of RWBY in preparation for this video... it better be good

Anonymous

It'll be interesting to see your discussion on RWBY failing to address systemic racism, especially in light of how Rooster Teeth as a whole has finally, after like 15+ years of being a company, decided to stop just ignoring any racism problems in the community as their official policy, and all it took was having LeVar Burton's daughter Mica consider suicide from death threats! Good job RT!

Thank you for making an educational video about subatomic particles.

You can donate directly to BLM. You can also try more specific ones like the Transgender District! https://www.transgenderdistrictsf.com/donate

Anonymous

absolutely all about RWBY and systemic racism bc that's the main bit i had with my friends, RWBY being unable to decide whether racism was bad are not. i'd love to see you talk about the manga in one of the videos just because it's wild to me that it exists for some reason
