Hey folks!

Thanks for being so patient. 'A few days' turned into a few more days because it turns out that Rooster Teeth, despite being a company founded entirely on appropriating Halo video game footage, are incredibly precious about anyone appropriating their material, in any fashion. Almost all their footage is flagged as 'blocked in all countries' and cannot be played anywhere, and all the footage that isn't blocked is automatically monetized by RT, so they get all the revenue from what little footage they allow to even exist on YouTube. And, worse, YouTube only reports 2 or 3 content ID claims at a time, so when I fix them, I find there were 3 more 'violations' waiting in the wings.

It's really frustrating to be this near the end and discover I have a lot of busywork to get through for people to be able to actually see it!

This does mean I've had some extra time to work more on little jokes and come up with new things to put in there while I wait for cuts to upload and get back to me with new content id stuff, and it means the animators working on some parts of the video have had extra time to refine their stuff too. I'm sure when I get sent to hell for video game crimes I'll manage to see the silver lining there, too.

In any case, while I fix this up, please find enclosed the first 2 chapters of the video (which, just so you know how much of a nightmare this is, still has 2 Content ID claims to fix, just not ones that block the video, lol)

Rooster teeth just pulled a Rooster Teeth moment

Casper Hope-Tindall

I find it completely unsurprising that RT guards its content to heavily, they just give off that fuck you got ours kinda vibe

Anonymous

please tell me that duck frame is the final thumbnail

Dominic Guilfoyle

Rooster Teeth being unrepentant douchebags?? I am shocked. SHOCKED! Well, not remotely shocked actually.

Anonymous

Oh god, should I watch this and then wait for the full video? Is that torture I’m willing to put myself through?

Anonymous

Er....I am genuinely asking this because I'm not sure if it's bad etiquette or something, but is it at all possible that (after the video is uploaded to YT) that we can get a download link to the direct file here? Upload it to mega or something so it can be shared without having to worry about YT's copyright strikes? Like, I remember how some parts of Hbomb's Sherlock Video are just uggo effects on Sherlock footage because of copyright and I wanted a clean version of the video. Just uploading the video to mega and making it available for download seems like an option, but idk if it actually is or isn't.

Anonymous

... Oh my god I had no idea Red vs Blue was still going.

The Doom Merchant

God, no fucking kidding. I made a video essay about Solaris that came out an entire month after I was otherwise finished with it because it took that long to clear all the Content ID bullshit. The best advice I have for you is • in my experience with movies at least, using non-chronological clips of around 7-8 seconds or fewer seems to be okay. i.e. ~7 seconds of Scene A, then cut to ~7 seconds of Scene D, then cut to ~7 seconds of whatever, etc. this probably isn't news to you, but still. • don't bother rendering in high-def for these test uploads, it's a waste of time. much faster to get through these problems with a 720p render that uploads much faster. Sorry you're having to deal with this bullshit. Hope you figure something out.

Anonymous

Is Jim Sterling's copyright deadlock still a thing? Stick 30 seconds of Chains of Love on the vid, that'll fix it.

IronNosy

Eyo Fallout 1/2 music

Noclip

I'd watch this on VIMEO ;)

Anonymous

“But then it came out and it was bad” Can’t say that about this video.

Anonymous

Oh shit I need to go watch the Red trailer now don't I

Anonymous

I've been excited for this for weeks now! As a genuine fan of RWBY, I can't wait to hear what you have to say.

Anonymous

Right? I used to LIVE on their social platform back when I was a kid, and religiously consumed everything they put out, but somehow in the 10+ year gap, I've passively started getting some pretty sketchy vibes from them. It's just such a dramatically different company now. I miss the old RvB season 2 days.

Anonymous

my little brother has been trying to get me to watch rwby for years, and this 20 min snippet was more enticing than anything he ever said about it. god I can't wait for the whole video, I'm stoked!!!

robbie

YOU DID THIS FOR MY BIRTHDAY

Anonymous

It took awhile to realise that the Rooster Teeth I liked was dead but the basically all of the original guys either retiring or getting fired reminded me of just how different the company is now.

Anonymous

Huh. Almost like intellectual property rights are fundamentally a bad idea or something. (Or maybe all property rights are a bad idea? Jk, unless... 😳)

robbie

post it in full ... we'll watch it again we promsie

Anonymous

well it's a fun video so far! I've like, heard of rwby? lol. good luck hbomb

Anonymous

No worries, take all the time you need. Thank you for all your hard work.

Anonymous

I'm so glad someone is finally talking about how insane and fever dream like Loonatics Unleashed was

Anonymous

On RT protecting their own material, it just reminded me that when they first started doing RTX as a full convention, they wouldn't allow any artist there in the artist alley to sell anything related to Rooster Teeth or a Rooster Teeth property. They could sell fanart for other properties, but not theirs

Anonymous

I forgot this was only part of the video and did a spit take on the abrupt ending

Anonymous

I am ready for 2+ more hours of this :V I am sorry for you digital paperwork requirements.

So looking forward to this, I had friends who loved RWBY and I kept being like "It's... fun? But not... good?" Finally, big bomb on the internet will have my back, that'll show them!

Anonymous

Yes, I did go and watch the Red Trailer. Yes you did put that "welcome back" bit in exactly the right spot in the video.

Anonymous

this is really good. i have a lot of weird feelings with rwby because i loved it in middle school and even wrote rwby fanfiction, but looking back its not as good as i thought is was, and this video really captures why I felt that way.

Anonymous

God I already love this. I had to quit the show at the end of season two, and you're already nicer to it than I would have been.

Anonymous

I very much enjoy RWBY and I'm so looking forward to this full video. This is my favorite property with major issues :)

Anonymous

RWBY always puts me in mind of like, the platonic expression of a 2003 Gamecube JRPG that you remember fondly but when you go back it was actually kinda shit. To me it feels a lot like watching all the cutscenes from a game and just waiting for the game to hand control over to you... but it never does.

Anonymous

I’m glad you put this out, because I have mixed but positive feelings about RWBY and I was a little concerned that this was going to be an overly negative takedown. Completely irrational anticipatory reaction, that you absolutely do not deserve, I’ll admit. And the preview is doing quite a bit to show me how wrong that reaction was. Looking forward to the full video! Hope you get the content ID stuff worked out!

Anonymous

Thank god there is someone to finally tell me what the fuck RWBY is after all these years

Anonymous

As someone who was a part of the RT and RWBY fandom since early RvB, and watched the shitshow that was RT being taken over by a Conglomerate and having most other fans and the RT Staff spew out literal lies and platitudes about how shit wouldn't change and literally made most of these accurate comments when it happened, it feels SO VINDICATING to know that I wasn't wrong, and that its not me 'being unable to accept change' (which was a common excuse RT loved to use against fans). I am so fucking EXCITED for the rest of this video. VINDICATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous

sooo excited for the whole video!!

Sid

Funny as ever, I feel bad for Kerry and Miles though, I think they're trying their best and they do well in their appearances like Fanservice and so on. :(

Anonymous

Have you considered trying an alternative like Peertube for example? Not something to replace YouTube (God forbid we ever replace YouTube), but just an easy way to host videos like these for people who want to watch the original ? The mega link suggested above is great idea too though!

Semilocon

Thank you for keeping us updated and for all the work you do. I really like your videos.

Anonymous

great start! i was both excited for this video and dreading it as someone who still watches the show but im glad to see you are approaching it from a very careful angle. god knows this show has ISSUES and im curious to see what you picked up what i might have missed. hope that the whole copyright issue sorts itself out soon. you talking about rvb reminded me how in their ultimate fanguide they call rvb “glorified fanfiction” and i was just thinking like... its just fanfiction

Carlfish

The "All Your Base" Flash animation that hit the mainstream, was released in 2001. I think it's reasonable to say that pre-2k was web prehistory. Content-wise it was a couple of news sites and forums, and some web comics we'd rather pretend we never read. (Edit: It seems that my comment has been unparented, or the parent deleted or something, leaving it as a weird non sequitur, but it was in reply to someone questioning whether we could call the 2000s the early history of web content.)

Anonymous

hboy me bomb this is stellar, so nice to have your content again

Dave

To be honest not exactly loving it even at the intro, I’ll give it a watch out of obligation but I found it condescending and disrespectful just to the fans alone along with the writers. (Seriously dude, acting like you aren’t trying to make us feel bad for liking the show while talking as though we don’t think critically about it and only hang around out of desperate hope sounds more like an insult or projection. Like you frame it as though I need someone to come in and go “Think critically about this piece of media” when I do that constantly, I have written literal essay, critical think pieces and spent hours on end debating its good and negative qualities. What’s more the point you keep coming back to is “What it could have been” which so far seems more like code for “What I wanted it to be” rather than an indictment on quality. Also if you have to draw lines to alert someone to an animation error in a minor scene, my goodness, I can’t imagine how much you must hate literally any show produced in the 80s for their animation. Also taking inspiration from a fight scene or weapon design doesn’t translate to actually trying to borrow a shows themes or story elements but you frame it like it is, am I just misunderstanding your intent here? Cos if not then that argument hurts my brain and not in an educational way. This is in the first three minutes. Oh also RWBY has abridged series and reacts, so maybe its cos you are trying to upload something longer than entire volumes and so the Youtube gods assume you’re basically placing up whole episodes. Yeah I knew about the later seasons, they’re fun, seem to tell pretty intriguing and complicated stories while still being funny. I don’t keep a close eye on it as I used too but that’s more reflective of my changing priorities than a lack of interest. Also kinda irked at how irrelevant this is and seemingly designed to go “Sellouts!” it is without any kind of argument behind it beyond vague speculation about them. ... OK but you cheer on Monty Oum referencing the Matrix but chastise RWBY for doing the same, what? So what you know about RVB season, what was that 10? But not 17? The whole RVB digressions sounds more and more like a gag now :/ & you just acknowledged RT has skills despite dismissing the writers with silence earlier. On the drop off, oh my gosh this whole thing just reeks of intentional mis-representation. Lookie, if I go back to the first episode of most popular series, its gonna have more views than anything else, because that is the one that people watch to decide whether they want to keep watching. If you were only lured in by the action which it seems you like many others were and had no interest in a story (There were literally comments that read “No fights this episode, skip it”) Then yeah the audience will drop off. The intro having more views is about as informative as saying “People saw the advertisement” but ignoring whether or not they bought the product, goodness, you didn’t even use the likes ration >:[ Jeff William's music is great, though I think the question of best is down to personal opinion. I loathe to bring up Monty Oum in a debate but suffice to say he had an opinion on people who gave his just starting out friends shit for their voice acting and it wasn’t a charitable one. Honestly given how you seemed meh on even the White Trailer and even more bored by the Black Trailer it really kinda gives the impression you just got an endorphin rush from Red and clung to it after that even though that specific thing is what you liked. Also I have no idea how one can have a go at the camera work on the Black Trailer. Also its a ribbon holding Blake’s weapons together, not a string, not sure if this was a joke but its not exactly confidence boosting to see this level of not understanding what you are watching or relying on gags like “Anime run” as a shorthand fro criticism. Oh my gosh I was actually hopeful for a moment when you noted Adam was an obvious villain and then you go and ruin it. Tell me, why exactly would people cease being people just because there’s monsters around? We see clearly civilization is thriving and functional so naturally you’re gonna get evil shit heads. What’s more, blowing up civilians s kind of a thing military’s or certain brands of extremists do, though its obvious he wasn’t meant to be doing that given he hid the details of the mission from Blake & we later find out he was meant to rob the train not blow it up. Oh hey, good catch there on Blake being upset by the civilian killing, gee, its almost like she’s a victim of child grooming, gaslighting and abuse. Along with the fact Adam worked to obscure and excuse his worst traits from her until he felt he had her under his thumb and was then proven wrong. Are you just complaining because the entire story wasn’t told in a singular trailer? We literally know who Blake was based on, she is the beauty and the beast, often switching that role with Yang and with the beast aspect rooted in people’s perception of Faunus. The club manager is also a gangster and info broker and given Yang never behaves like this again, the theme outlined at the end of the trailer and literally spelled out, I think it should be painfully obvious she was putting on an act, an act she literally used to lure an enemy into a trap yet you frame this as... What? I am legit confused at this point. The goons are an axe gang reference. Photoshop filter? Oooh I was right, you are just annoyed you preconceptions about the characters didn’t bear out, like a lot of people who assumed the girl grinning and chuckling in the red trailer would be a broody angst machine. Your conclusion really fails to line up with your summary of the trailers. In your opinion, the fact its still going 7 seasons in says otherwise.

Anonymous

I hadn't heard of RWBY until you started talking about this video and I think all I need in my life is this video and that will be sufficient fill

Anonymous

Ngl I feel bad about this coming out right after one of the voice actresses came out with a statement about the abuse she suffered at the hands of her ex.

Marissa Key

camp camp as 'something you could easily say is worse' than rwby is extremely funny. shout out to RT for making hitler a character and running joke in their fun cartoon and having like 1 black character? who is also presented as a joke and if i remember correctly is literally named bonquisha

Dominic Guilfoyle

I'm sorry that you really like a bad show my dude but God you really need to take it less personally when people criticise it. Please don't watch the full version when it's uploaded, it really seems like you have an unhealthy attachment to this show.

Dave

I'd recommend actually watching the show given its free on Youtube, it'd take less time than his video and if the quality seen here is any indication of the review going forward, you're not gonna get an accurate presentation of the series here.

Anonymous

That's great...

Anonymous

In response to Rooster Teeth's copyright claims, you should do a video in the style of Some More News's video about John Krasinski

Anonymous

Really excited for the rest of this!! I was hardcore into RWBY mainly during the hiatus between V2/V3, and as much fun as it can be to just straight dunk on them, this is the first time I've seen someone properly cover the excitement for potential for both the show and future of RT early on. Even while the fandom was complaing/critiquing things (especially prom arc, oof), there was this excitement for seeing the animation/production value become better, feeling like the creators were listening to criticism, and that there were fun things being built up to. Anyway, S3 was when I realized it probably wasn't gonna deliver lol. Looking forward to seeing what your thoughts are on All That.

Anonymous

I’ll admit I’m one of those people that watched the Red trailer, couldn’t get through the voice acting in episode one, and then just watched the trailer again.

Anonymous

Hey all, producer here! Sorry about Dave; we removed him so he won’t be harassing people about RWBY anymore.

Anonymous

This is looking to be one of your best videos yet, I cannot wait to watch the rest of the video! Keep up the good work Hbomb!

Anonymous

Have you maybe tried getting contact with some of RTs core staff? People like Gus Sorola and Barbara Dunkelman are pretty active on Twitter and seem to like working with the community quite a bit. It may be worth a shot hitting one of the people that worked on RWBY up and try and resolve those issues together.

Anonymous

Ruby was infinitely better as a character when we thought she was going to be an expressive mute in the trailer for a dark fantasy world, and then we got... westerners blindly aping shonen tropes and making something much worse than the sum of its parts.

Anonymous

Like, genuinely this is a show I could write fucking THESES over. A failure to carry over tone, a failure to properly utilize inspiration, a failure to commit to character arcs and plotpoints. Every time RWBY gives you something interesting, it's almost immediately walked back to do more safe anime tropes and you restart the cycle of hoping it could be better.

Anonymous

The deadlock works for content that is forcibly monetized, not one that is absolutely forbidden from being viewed

Anonymous

"can you conceive of learning that a show you had fun with during high school is now 17 seasons deep" nothing has ever been so relatable to my supernatural-loving heart

Anonymous

legitimate criticism tho: when you play rwby's leitmotif, it's mixed way too quietly compared to your voice. I couldn't hear it at all. def make that more prominent if you can.

Erin Rumsey

Can’t wait for the rest of the video!! :)

Anonymous

As someone who really used to love RWBY (still kinda do in a weird way) I'm looking forward to the full thing. Not only the awful pacing issues and shakey animation but also the weird political undertones that are there, I'm excited to finding out your take on the whole thing. Kinda like with the Sherlock vid. I sometimes I enjoy watching that show out of sheer spite and what not to do in terms of writing and RWBY is now something similar.

Anonymous

Oh man, you've just reminded me of how AMAZING loonatics unleashed was thank you

Anonymous

This is all extremely good but one of my favorite jokes in it is at the very beginning where you go "and written by two ..." and then continue to the next point. Brilliant. There truly is nothing to say.

Anonymous

Also, it's very funny that Yoko Taro's gacha game based on fairy tales just came out, and its Snow White has like the exact same design as Weiss. Like, absolutely the exact same. Red and blue accents and all.

Anonymous

He tried that with the war on Christmas. It did not work.

Anonymous

I loved the trailers, and Monty Oum's fight scenes in all media were always just my absolute delight. I...cringed hard at some of the voice acting (with some exceptions. I liked Yang & Early Roman!), and basically just watched it for the fun fight scenes. It's the type of show that should be my jam and really enjoyed parts! Yet I've found myself with less and less energy to keep up with it, and I never really understood why. I'm...nervously looking forward to this full video.

Anonymous

After the fight animations deteriorated when Monty passed and the plot got, really convoluted and bloated, I still quite enjoyed the RWBY Chibi stuff. But that may be because I was already a fan of most of the talent from their other RT productions. And thinking about it now, I've not gone back to rewatch any of it; that spin-off was entertaining as pop-corn if not technically any good.

Anonymous

Theres a sad kind of irony in RT getting its start because of fair use and then having such a stronghold on their own IPs like this...

Anonymous

The first music note clip you show is too quiet compared with your voice in the video. I had to turn it up a little. Not by much but its noticeable :)

Anonymous

Cant wait for the whole video :) I miss the classic hmbomberguy intro i really like the sample and im creature of habit haha

Anonymous

Really looking forward to the rest of this.

Anonymous

I know RWBY is bad. But I still like watching the show.

Anonymous

Never seen or heard of RWBY, but looking forward to the rest of the video. And the brief screenshot of Diary of a Camper sent me down a really entertaining rabbit hole of old Quake videos and webcomics that I hadn't seen for over 20 years, so thanks for the fun afternoon and for reminding me that Oh God, I'm So Old!

Platus

I've had RWBY in the "trash I like because it's good trash" box for a while now ... after skipping like the first three seasons because they're almost unwatchable ... and so far you've just been articulating why

Anonymous

I remember being in art school and watching the red trailer when it first dropped- I wanted so badly to create something as amazing as the rwby trailers. Now i look at the show and I just cannot bring myself to feel that joy and inspiration that I used to have for it. You perfectly articulated that experience. Cant wait for the rest of the vid

Dammit Joe

Wow, you’re probably the first person in 20 years to talk about Loonatics.

Anonymous

A RIVER IN A DRY LAND!

LlamaMaster

Can we all at least agree that Jaune was an absolute idiot when it came to romance in the first three volumes? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sikx5U3SnTE

LlamaMaster

For what it's worth, as someone who watched the whole series for the first time recently, I think Volumes 5 and 6 are pretty damn good. The plot is still "meh", but it does a good job of having some strong character development (or at least good character-defining moments) for many of my favorites, and I would say the overall animation + character design peaked compared to Volumes 4 and 7. But yeah, RWBY Chibi is great. "This is filth! FIIIIILTH!"

Anonymous

This whole process sounds like Beaver Bother In Real Life.,

Anonymous

"Harry Brewis- September 19th, 1992 - September 19th, 2026- This epitaph is garbage, and here's why"

Anonymous

Never watched any of RWBY except for the first trailer back in the day. Still was entirely captivated by this snippet of video and am looking forward to the rest!

Anonymous

Gonna have to murder a whole stock photo family to get enough space to write it all. I'm on a watch list now aren't I?

Anonymous

Finally some good fucking food

Anonymous

I watched like... the first half of the first rwby episode years ago and thought it was awful so I can't wait to have my opinion validated XD But those trailers really were kick ass I hadn't seen those before!

Anonymous

This is fantastic!! Wishing you all the best with getting past the content ID claims. I really love how you've set the video up!

Anonymous

just became a patron so i could watch this early and gosh i’m so excited for 3 hours of this ahaha you’ve already put points that have been on my mind into words so perfectly omggg

Anonymous

I look forward to your sarcastic jab at Rooster Teeth for building their entire enterprise, top to bottom, on copying other people's material, and then condemning anyone who copies their material.

Anonymous

this makes me so very excited! even though im a general fan of the show i love seeing your perspective on things!

Anonymous

'because it turns out that Rooster Teeth, despite being a company founded entirely on appropriating Halo video game footage, are incredibly precious about anyone appropriating their material, in any fashion' The freakin' irony of that >_> theyve been trying to take down animations people are making with the sprites from the highly average RWBY fighting game too. Just let people do things!

Phoenix Cherry

It makes me so happy that Hbomb also gets how hard it is to unpick RWBY. There's just... there's so much going on at once

Anonymous

Is the animation even that good? Like Oum seems talented at fight choreography but it all looks pretty stiff. I don't get the appeal of rwby at all, even the trailers, but that just kind of made this more interesting - it's cool to see a super detailed look from the inside at a subculture I don't understand.

Anonymous

yeah I agree, I guess it's considered pretty good for the time and considering the technical limitations/low budget?

Anonymous

hope that the full video gets into the underage magic ass lighting they put on yang from that very first trailer- rwby has hella Made By Men disorder and it’s esp sad given that I feel like it’s the first (& maybe only?) time that rt was getting a substantial footing among queer women, and gaybies in particular

Imogen Geier

I'm pretty sure I know and do not want to Google, but what's "underage magic lighting"?

Anonymous

As a big fan of RWBY, I really hope that when this full video comes out that Miles and Kerry at least watch this. I think that RWBY has a lot of potential to be amazing still and I think there’s still ways to fix it

Zaira H

The Bleach music at the beginning really hit me in the nostalgia. I never watched RWBY, and I only ever saw the first few seasons of Red vs. Blue, but this section got me curious. I'm interested in seeing the rest of this when it is censor-ready.

Anonymous

The 'welcome back' got me. Went and watched all the RT popular uploads. Amazing 😂
