With each new update, maintaining the Mac and Linux builds becomes more and more challenging. The latest build (v0.2.6) only seems to run on Mac when the stars align, and even then, it's significantly less stable than the Windows builds.

I'm continuing to hammer out some of the biggest crossplatform bugs, and for the time being, I would still very much like the game to be fully crossplatform-compatible when it's finished.

All the same, I believe in informed decision-making, so I'd like to run a quick poll with supporters (as well as potential supporters and ex-supporters) to get a better feel for things.

I'm regularly on windows but haven't been able to use my windows machine for a while and probably never will again (needs replacing). I'm currently on a mac but it probably wouldn't run it. I was planning testing the next build on it. Hugs

I feel like this poll might be missing a few of the desired “potential/ex supporter” opinions. For example, if you’re worried people might be unsubscribing because of this issue, that’s not covered in the options. I recently unsubbed (due to financial shortcomings), but I’d want to make it clear “I’m an ex-supporter but inadequate Mac/Linux was not a factor in termination”.

Currently try to update the gamefiles and it seems that it wont work ^^ Sitting here since 10minutes. any advices?

you use unreal right? dont the platform settings just build it on other platforms for you? ive never had it mess up on me, but id imagine some 3rd party scripts and plugins may not work well

I'm a Windows gamer usually, but it would be nice to have cross-platform compatability if that changes in the future (I carry a Pixelbook with Debian VM support, when I'm away from home, for instance). If the Mac/Linux builds are giving you trouble, might I suggest putting them on hold, getting near/to 1.0 for the Windows build, and then picking back up on cross-platform support once the dust clears?

Unity! The crossplatform compiler is pretty powerful, but it starts to become less predictable/reliable when you start introducing custom file management code and (especially) custom shaders, both of which I've added o'plenty.

I'm mostly just trying to be very careful that I don't dig myself too deeply into a "Windows-support-only" hole that I can't dig my way out of, later. It's muuuuuch harder to retroactively make a project Mac/Linux-compatible than it is to just maintain compatibility from start to finish.

I have a Linux machine, but my main gaming rig is Windows because I really can't be bothered to deal with compatibility issues. The poll is starting to show what everyone already knew, which is that OS X and Linux distros are niche for gamers. That being said, I still think it would be a shame to drop support for those platforms. You could just finish the game and then retroactively adapt builds for Linux/OS X, but given the rate at which platform-unique issues seem to pile up as you've been working on the game, you may end up facing a nightmare-ish pile of issues that would take way more time to even parse them all than it'd be worth. Ultimately, you're a one-man army (holy shit this latest build is a ridiculous improvement, I think you really should have called it 0.3) but I understand you're not a machine, and I imagine having everything working perfectly(ish) on your Windows build only to find OS X won't even launch and throws its notoriously cryptic errors (I'll show you too many corpses being created High Sierra, just try me!) and then basically having to go over the game three separate times every build is draining. I think it'd be awesome if you continued support for these platforms, but if you did decide to drop them they also aren't technically locked out entirely. Linux has WINE, and OS X has Boot Camp, or Parallels if you're willing to buy it, and while they can never replace native compatibility, they are there.

I would agree it would be beneficial to focus on a platform build than spend the extra time on cross-platform. This way less time is spent debugging different systems and more stuff you'd wanna do can be done in less time. One idea to not totally leave other os' in the water until a more finished product is to update them every few updates you push for the primary platform. This will give you more time in the long run imo.

Windows 64bit here

Win 64

I currently only own Apple machines, and while I can run Windows via bootcamp, it's a huge hassle, and solutions like VMWare Fusion and Parallels kill the performance on things like games. I'll be honest, I'd probably choose to drop my pledges if Mac builds were abandoned, as it's too much of a hassle to jump over to Windows just for one game.

I'm only going to mention that I am a Linux user myself. Namely since there's the unfortunate conception that Linux people are extremely rare, and projects maintaining a build for them isn't necessary. Especially with the privacy concerns in Windows 10, our numbers are likely only going to increase over time.

Win 10 user here. Former supporter but will support again in the future.

Window 10 User, I've always had a backup computer of Ubuntu. I think it's best if you continue on with a "Linux" build.

I like choice. My backup system is Linux based, I do use a Windows 10 machine right now, but I would prefer to keep my options open.

I’m a huge machead. I love the Appletini. But honestly? Most Mac users looking for games have already had to deal with virtual machines or boot camps. Given you’re a one-man show or close to it, cutting out Apple will exclude very few people, who frankly already have options to run your software in a different way. Or need to upgrade their hardware if for some reason they’re still using a G4.

Anonymous

And if the Apple user can’t acknowledge the challenges it brings to a small studio like your own to support their closed system, they’re not being rational or supportive of *your* end goals. And I do have a MacBook, Apple Watch, Apple phone, HomePod, iMac..... I’m deep into Tim Cook’s clutches and love it. But that’s the reality. You can’t be an Apple user that games and not use some sort of VM or dual booting solution.

i'm ditching windows 10 soon for linux, so much more freedom.

What if we're on a mac but using bootcamp to run Windows?

Anonymous

Been supporting for months waiting for a working Mac version; would be fairly lame to discover that that was a waste..

Dark Sura

I have used Apple, and linux on many occasions. But you always end up going back to windows if you want to play the latest releases. I would consider if possible, the option of trying to adapt the game once finished to other platforms.

Anonymous

What if you aren't a current supporter, but have been before, or may be in the future?

Anonymous

I buy each build on itch.io. I always attempt to play them on Mac, but end up trying the Windows version (I have a bootcamp install) with much better success. If the Mac/Linux versions are dragging things down I say cut them. Finish the windows version and then port to Mac/Linux later if you're still up to it. I still really, really, want a Mac version but in your shoes I would still cut it.

There is no option for "Not currently a supporter, but would consider supporting if the Windows releases were more frequent". Also, VR.

I'm not currently a supporter, but would consider supporting if Mac/Linux builds were improved.

Im sorry but mac and Linux are not gaming OS's. If you own one of these then you shouldnt be surprised when there isnt support. I am in favor of apk format, though.

Anonymous

This isn't ever gonna run on Android. And technically speaking there isn't such things as gaming OS's. All things considered Steam can play almost any game on Linux now due to some massive changes.

Anonymous

will you add fat/stuffing or inflation to rack 2?

Anonymous

I played it on my phone today, ms know-it-all. And no there is no dedicated Compter OS for gaming but you sure as hell dont buy a mac if you want to game. Or if you did I'd call you dense.

Anonymous

I use Linux Ubuntu/Mint, no Windows here.

Anonymous

Is this game available to play on ipad?

Wild Doggo Jackie

I primarily play on my Windows desktop but it would certainly be nice to have some Linux support, as i'm transitioning to using Linux on my laptop.

Anonymous

In theory, the more platforms - the greater the audience. So it is worth overcoming the difficulties, it pays off :)

Anonymous

Sorry, i have only Linux here and i will not switch to Windows. I hope there will be a Linux Version.

Anonymous

I'm a Linux user but I grudgingly resort to Windows to play. I *will* continue to support if Mac/Linux support is suspended, but I worry that suspending cross-platform work now will mean it will permanently put them in the "too hard basket" later on. If you think making it cross-platform later will be manageable, and the game gets done faster, I'm good with that.
