i very much appreciate the development this volume gave ruby, it's something they've been building up to for a few volumes now that ruby is not doing okay, and she was long overdue for a mental breakdown. we saw glimpses of it last season and in season 7 as she became more and more disillusioned to her childhood idealisation of being a huntress. ruby's getting older and she had an insane amount of pressure put on her shoulders from a young age. i also adored the blake and yang development we got, with blake being a lot more outspoken (and even flirty) and yang finally opening up about her feelings - which, as a long-time fan of this show, and of the blake/yang ship (affectionately known as bumblebee) episode 6 was everything to a lot of fans who truly have been waiting forever for that confirmation that bumblebee was real, and the song that played during the confession scene is one of my favourites from the soundtrack of this volume, it's such a gorgeous song and is a "part 2" to another song, bmblb, from the volume 4 soundtrack :) imagine having to wait for a week between these episodes like we did, lmao, this volume was incredibly stressful bc most episodes ended on a cliffhanger where you were constantly like "where is this going" - like; "omg jaune is old now what the fuck", or "did ruby just commit s*icide?". the fan theories that ppl came up with after these eps were so fun - esp after that second to last ep. people thought we'd get volume 1 ruby back, or ruby would turn into summer rose, the theories were wild. as a whole i think this volume shows how improved the writing for this show has become and it's definitely the most creative volume in terms of story and animation and soundtrack (the singer for the soundtrack, casey lee williams, is now primarily working on the soundtrack by herself now when before she and her dad, jeff williams, worked on the soundtrack together, and it has such a fun sound, not that i didn't love the soundtrack when jeff was in charge) imo, it really allowed for them to develop the characters and relationships, particularly ruby, jaune and blake and yang, but in general it really showcases just how different they all are from their volumes 1-3 counterparts and how much they've all changed.
