To clear up your confusion, Root said whoever picked up the phone would have complete access to the machine for 24 hrs. So when Finch saw Reese was there, Finch split the call by rewiring the phones to make sure Reese had access along with Root because he trusts Reese with the access to fix what's going on. I loved this episode, the only thing missing was Fusco in the mix. Carter vs HR is heating up. Shaw and Reese are such a badass duo. The acting from both actors in the Finch/Nathan confrontation scene was amazing. Finch unknowingly told the next number why they had to be irrelevant and it was his best friend. One of my favorite scenes in the show. Can't wait for the next episode and also the season 3 poll to hope it wins. Also your camera set is nice.

An interesting note: Due to the proliferation and use of cellphones, there are no more public telephones left in NYC. The last was removed in May of 2022.

That is one reason this show would not work today! No more public phones is the one thing that ages this otherwise futuristic show!

This is a wonderful penultimate episode of TV which leads up to a great season finale and next season!

1. Ok Froots... It's Fuss-ko ...Not Foos-ko ....Nobody on the show EVER. pronounced it the way you're pronouncing it ...Ya frikkin Frode Lope ..smirk.. 2. You: "I reckon Ernest Thornhill.. If you rearranged them.. Says.. Spells machine" ......Yeah there's no L's in "machine" Froots... So you can go ahead and take those L's 3. But hey... You took a smart idea and you went with it... It was funny ....But also the show SHOULD have done something like this ...It would have been fun to figure out 4. Nathan... The guy that was handling the Irrelevant Numbers ...We actually DID already know he was doing this ....It happened in Season 1 that Finch told him to delete the backdoor access.. Finch was actually against having that kind of control... But at the end of the episode when Finch had left.. Nathan came back in and made sure he still had backdoor access to the machine ....It was clear from that scene that Nathan would continue to look out for people who nobody seemed to care for ....This ofcourse happened in Season 1 which was selected over a long time period.. I'm assuming you don't remember it anymore 5. Finch rewired the call so that it would ring both Root's cell AND John's cell ...To keep some extra suspense I suppose we couldn't hear what the machine told Root ...And some extra suspense was added when we heard the machine speak a full sentence to John instead of the regular code ....I guess we might find out soon what the machine wants from them

There is a bit of wordplay happening with the title. In the flashbacks, we see a 'day ###' counter, presumably counting from 'day 0' when The Machine went online. But the title of the episode is 'Zero Day', which is a term in computer security for a vulnerability in a software system that can be exploited (say by bad actors) as soon as it is known about with zero days of warning for those who are maintaining the software system (giving them no time to prepare a patch or a fix). The moment that the virus forces The Machine to reset is both its new 'day 0' and its 'zero day' vulnerability, where someone has a chance to put it under their control and the custodians of The Machine (the federal government in this case) can do nothing to stop it. The slow drip of little revelations that we've been getting all season about the nature of The Machine and its state of mind has been very intriguing, at least that's how I remember it from the original watch. In this episode we get some big additions to it. Loved the scenes between Finch and Nathan, and Finch and Root. Rewatching, it's been titillating. :-) P.S.: Camera, camera angle look great. Live anagram solving during the reaction... I'm here for it! :-)
