Think of it from Chuck's position, he was hands on for eons and eons, hoping that humanity would "grow up" but they didn't, so his next thing to try was the hands off approach and see if that worked. He cares for humanityh, but also wants us to grow up, and you can't always do everyting and intervene or they become dependent. He also gave us free will. Anyways, that scene was great. Then, the whole idea about him thinking he might as well just give it all over to Amara, and let her have her time. You gotta think on an epic scale here, these are immortal beings with god powers, they operate on a time scale much different than our own. He reigned for so many billions of years, and now he's like "time to let her reign" and sacrifice himself for a while. Ultimately though, he wants to save humanity, as he said the deal is to keep creation, and he'll go in the cage. So he does care.
