Badger is a middle man for this job, the lord Warrick would not deal directly with him, so he... subcontracted I guess would work, Mal and his crew to do the smuggling. And I agree, Kaylee is adorable in her "layer of cake".

Inara's dress during the ball was an actual dress from the movie Gone wih the Wind. It was borrowed from their museum and had alterations done. Also, if you look on Kaylee's shelf when it's panning from the "radio" to the dress there is a figurine of Han Solo frozen in carbonite.

Kaylee in that big pretty dress talking engines with a bunch of dudes was the highlight of this episode. :)

I think this might be my second favorite episode of the series. It's just so fun and there is a lot of excellent wordplay.

Bold statement. Behind Jaynestown, or War Stories (the two consensus best episodes)? The prevailing view is that the middle of the series (which she's about to get into, depending on whether or not you include Safe, as I do) is generally considered to be the strongest part.

I guess Mal learned from the end of the war that he has to be cold, abrupt and unsentimental to manage a post-war crew. But the whole point of doing it is to build something meaningul with a vaguely family-like structure. Bad combination when he gets worried about his mechanic getting sad about her place in things . . . Good combination when he finds a way include the dress in the activities . . .

While I admire Atherton trying to get Inara to settle down, his motives are totally selfish, and he sees her as just another object to be owned. The true meaning of marriage is lost on him. It's meant to be an equal partnership.

On a fan forum someone once posted that in the future that would probably be Kaylees wedding dress when she marries Simon. I could envision it as Simon offering to buy her the best wedding dress and her saying that she's already got a fancy dress, why would she need another. And Simon going along with it even knowing it isn't a proper wedding dress, just because he knows it will make Kaylee happy.
