The guy you don't like is Jayne Cobb. The actor who plays him is named Adam Baldwin, but he's not related to the famous Baldwin family.

This was the first ep to air as Fox unhappy with the Pilot ep because they thought it moved too slow forced Joss to come up with this alternative. Mal kicking Crow into the engine was the point where I was hooked. Up until that point it seemed like an average scifi story.

I do like that with this episode they do a better job explaining the power that a registered Companion has, which is why she's useful for Mal to have on his ship.

Interesting you question why they keep calling it a boat (presumably as its a sea term), which raises the point, why assume 'ship' which is equally a sea term. As it is, ships in the earth sense tend to be registered official vessels, like in the navy, and boats, tend to be smaller and things that are independently owned, so they might be going with that.

When River said Mal, bad in the Latin. Shes being literal, Mal is the latin word for bad, like in MALfunction.

I liked it because in most shows you see this guy and hear his speech and think, "Oh. so this is going to be one of the main antagonists that will keep popping up." And then Mal kicks him into the engine. There always seems to be a scene or 2 like this each show that let's you know it's not the same old formula.

Oh my Lord, your face at the engine kick......... Mal is a good man, but he does draw the line at being good to those who threaten him and his crew. I am really enjoying your reactions to this, one of my very favorite shows.

In nautical terms the difference between a boat and a ship is vague and not fully explainable by anyone (eg one goes on a ship but in a boat).So all submarines are boats and they also have to carry their own atmosphere with them which is exactly what you get with a spaceship...darn it.

On your comments about River being a badass: It's never been confirmed by Joss, but there are fan theories that River is the slayer in 2517.

I have a friend who is a merchant marine and he always calls a ship a boat. Sort of interchangeable, except you're cooler if you call it a boat.
