A lot of you wanted Android 11 on RG552, but ended up preferring Android 9 in the end for one reason or another. (Hey, its your choice, all the power to you!)

Due to technical limitations (bootloader requirements, etc) it is necessary to re-partition the RG552 emmc as part of the flashing process whenever the Android 9 / 11 boundary gets crossed. This is because the newer Android 11 bootloader uses dynamic partitions rather than static ones (as was the case with the bootloader used by Android 9 and below).

Normally this is done via MaskROM installs, but as it turns out MaskROM can be a tough beast to tame whenever a bootloader swap is involved, making things needlessly complicated for you, the user.

To make the move between Android revisions easier, I've retro-fitted the latest RG552 builds for each Android revision (Beta #6 for 8.1, Beta #15 for 9.0) with SDFlash packages which you can use to easily hop between revisions with the help of a spare >= 4GB MicroSD card.

Please make sure to read the included README.txt file contained within the SDFlash packages for further instructions should you see yourself going down that route!

I hope this made someone's day a little more enjoyable!

Not gonna lie ..that beta 15 always seemed to outperform everything lol . Mainly the battery life in my experiences ..maybe my 552 just has a faulty one but yeah the battery life was so much better on the 9. That being said ..all of these have been phenomenal. Very happy I subscribed to your patreon and it’s been well worth it! Keep up the amazing job dude 👍🏻 Ps. Going back to 9 now lol

I personally rock 9 as well, but that's because I'm a big "my device, my rules" kind of guy. I'm not a big fan of how Google always tries to tell me what is good for me or isn't. That aside, the Android 9 build for RG552 just had more time to "mature", as in, everything in there is tweaked to perfection, while I and a few other guys on Discord are still trying to hit that "sweet spot" for Android 11. Once we do these builds should all rank up quite similarly, but for now the 9.0 build is where you get the most "bang for your buck" performance-wise. (Sometimes up to 5-10fps more in AetherSX2, it really is crazy...)

ill still need to that open gapps file to get the play store running on 9 correct?

blackseraph

Yes. At the moment 9 and 8.1 still come without Gapps pre-installed. I might do a roll-up release of them with the Gapps included (like 11) when I have a few hours to spare, but for now please install them via TWRP post-install.

I could have sworn I just replied to one of your comments, but its gone?! Either way, answering your question Robert Soliz: 8.1/9.0 to 9.0: No wipe needed 11 to 11: No wipe needed Every other combination: Wipe needed

Anonymous

Thanks man ! Yeah I deleted it because I just went and wiped it and everything was cool..thank you though for responding ! It took a few minutes to wipe/factory reset and I did get nervous lol but it’s all good now. Totally random but I always psp performance is top notch on 9 and also android GTA 3 runs flawlessly..on 11 it would stutter from time to time. Anyways I’m a happy camper ..thank you brother 👍🏻

I got 9.0 installed via the SD flash method, however when I go to install gapps post-install it fails due to not enough storage space in the system partition. Any fix for this?

This is neat android 9 always felt the best on the device

Yeap... for me I love android 9 on RG552. I might try 11 in the future if it runs better than 9. But thanks for your work, amazing work.

Sorry to post this question here but it's the most recent and visible thread and I'm not sure how notifications work on patron for your end. However, are there any plans for a future PowKiddy X18s update? The HDMI setting especially is a real pain with regards to maintaining proper orientation and no ability to duplicate the screens and when outputting to HDMI the touchscreen becomes unresponsive. Thanks in advance and apologies once again for the misplaced question.

blackseraph

X18S will see more updates but the issue you're bringing up about HDMI is pretty much a no-fix situation. Most HDMI components are kernel sided and we have zero kernel source to work off of. I'm fairly adept at kernel hacking so it's not like it's a complete dead end but it's not something easily fixed, and I doubt we can expect a proper HDMI fix from PowKiddy or a kernel source drop allowing us to fix it ourselves.

Nicky Santoro

Much appreciated. Would be nice to have it somewhat fixed, at least the screen mirroring. But thanks for the reply! BTW, putting vita analog sticks on these things is a must and a world of difference it makes. Thanks, Black!

Many will crucify me for it but even in the wide array of my handhelds it's still my favorite Minecraft machine despite all the tinker work required to make it shine. I don't know why. Probably has a lot to do with my love for clamshells. It's definitely one of those passion projects of mine. I can't wait to revisit it.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but the L2 and R2 buttons in Game Pass still don't work. ;)

Which revision are you referring to? Latest 11 build has been confirmed working by a Game Pass user already. (I have no Game Pass subscription myself.)

Have you tried to change the option on the toolbar to the XBOX? Where is the Toad icon, it worked to me after I changed it.
