Just gonna point out a few cultural things that people miss in this. So, we've seen in the past that Maomao hides her face in her sleeves when dealing with people of much higher standing than her - and in this episode we see everyone hiding their faces in their sleeves when Jinshi walks past... This is because it's deemed rude to look at the face of someone much higher than you without permission/being addressed first. Lakan, for all his faults, seems to care about Maomao - the look on his face, much like his daughter's, promised a VERY BAD TIME to the guard that hit her. Man's likely dead by now. The shock on his face I've seen explained a few ways - one, that he was horrified by the idea that his actions caused so much damage to Maomao and two, that someone of Jinshi's nobility would _carry out a servant_ with his own two hands. It shows just how much Jinshi cares about her that he would do such a thing in plain sight where everyone could pretend not to see.

Yeah, I'm not convinced that Lakan is part of the conspiracy at all. After all, HE was the one who brought all the "set-up" cases to the attention in the first place. If he was behind those, then that would be self-sabotage and a pretty stupid thing to do. I think the show is trying to misdirect us by playing on our distrust/loath of him.

Seeing Maomao get all swollen and concussed was hard to stomach, but I do like how brutally realistic it was. A young girl taking a huge metal bat to the skull with enough force to send her flying... yeah, that's a bad time. Kudos to special details like the ringing of the ears, and the loss of consciousness after the adrenaline stops.

Think back to all those scenes of Jinshi and Gaoshun talking in private, and how almost *every single time* it's Gaoshun talking about what Jinshi can and can't do, about how he can't be allowed to be seen in certain ways or doing certain things, and how Jinshi's *always* agreed no matter how begrudgingly. And he just throws it all right out the window when Maomao's hurt.

Also the fact that literally everyone who saw it happen was disgusted by the guard's actions. He was literally three times her size. He did NOT need to use that much force, or even his weapon.
