To be fair to Mark, he didn't start the fight in episode 1 against the Maulers, he just asked them to shut the project down. Then got his ass kicked for it, then Angstrom blew the place up. He had very little to do with how that shit went down.

The "You don't deserve this" may actually be fairly important, assuming the show is taking it in the direction I think. Karma is a concept that almost everyone feels at some level, even those who don't believe in it, and unfortunately one of the ways people can react to pain and adversity is to assume it must just be their due or that they caused it somehow. Factor in Mark's extreme shame here from what he was pushed into doing, and it may be vital for him to hear "You don't deserve this" so that he can move past the pain and not reject the good in life he might otherwise feel he hasn't earned.
