You're in for a treat. I hadn't heard of this before the YaBoyRoshi channel started reacting to it. It came out of nowhere for me but ended up being my anime of the year that year. Plus it's got that crispy WIT Studio animation with simplistic character models that really adds to some nice fluid animation.

I would like to comment on a few things: The first episode is inspired by the folktale "The Emperor's New Clothes," written by Hans Christian Andersen. This was confirmed by the author in an interview. "Kage" is the Japanese word for "shadow." The sign language in Ranking of Kings is supervised by the Tokyo Federation of the Deaf. One of the animators, Hiromi Yoshida, has hearing difficulties. In an interview, she said, "I drew two parts of the sign language cut in episode 2. I love this manga, and it was a very fun experience to dive into it and portray my own language through character animation. It might have been the first time in my life where I felt glad to be hard of hearing (I've had slight hearing difficulties since birth)." The author of the manga has maintained anonymity. In an interview, at the time the anime was released, he said, "My parents don't know anything about it. They still think I am working as a salaryman. They are old-fashioned and conservative types who have no understanding of manga as a career. I am afraid that they will worry about me if they find out that I make a living by drawing manga, so I keep it secret from them." The Japanese voice actor for Prince Daida is Yuuji Kaji, who also voices Eren Jaeger.

Not sure if it would be considered long or short, but Fruits Basket is 63 episodes and has so much heart with a lot of amazing female characters, and a female lead like Violet!

They never say an age for Bojji or Daida in the show, I think the consensus from japanese sources place Bojji being 14 and Daida around 12. Two reasons Bojji seems so much younger than his age is that one, he's just small, and two he's probably infantilized because of his deafness, being seen as useless or dumber than he actually is. A short summary on how people viewed Deafness in history; a heavily discriminated and marginalized group, labeled Dumb (Mute) which led people to originally believe they were incapable of logical reasoning. Sign Languages were formally recorded in the 1500s between the American Natives and Europeans, and there were attempts to utilize in education for the Deaf. In the 1800s Oralism arose which rejected use of Sign Language and forced Deaf people to gain education purely by learning to speak and lip-read which was an extraordinarily difficult if not an impossible endeavor, students were forbidden to use sign language and were considered failures if they continued to do so. This period is considered a 'dark age for the deaf community' and Sign language was not fully accepted back into education until the late 1900s, officially 2000s. Deaf people were extremely looked down upon and misunderstood and the mindset prevailed even into the 2000s. Which explains a lot about why it was so hard for me to properly get my hearing diagnosed as a very young child in the early 2000s.

Correction: The 10 episodes are not a second season, but skipped mini-stories that take place between the episodes of the first season, which is why it was not promoted as a second season. If these mini-stories had not originated in the manga, they could be called OVAs. They are also rather unpopular, which means that the first 23 episodes are actually all anyone watches of the show.

I would have said 12 and 15, as we later see the pregnancy of Daida in a flashback and Bojji already looked 2 years old. I would therefore estimate him to be 3 years older.

They don't add much to the story. You could theoretically put them between the episodes, but they are very different and would take you out of the plot.
