Really recommend people watch this 13 min video breaking down a timeline of the development of "the war on drugs." Goes into how all of it was really propaganda used as a tool to give politicians power to pass legislation that helped them to segregate/imprison/control black Americans. To this day the US still have the largest number of incarcerated people in any country by far with the incarceration rate of black Americans being 5 times higher than the rate for white Americans despite only 13% of the US population being black https://www.prisonpolicy.org/research/race_and_ethnicity/ https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=shGpC_WVDQk

Thanks for this. I've actually watched one or two videos already from Crash Course Black History, so I'm looking forward to giving this a view.

Sure not all of it was propaganda, there was a crack/cocaine epidemic through the 70s and early 80s as well as other illegal drugs, but “the war” was used as an excuse to pass lots of damaging legislation and to justify police over patrolling black neighborhoods Wherever police go they’re gonna find crime no matter what. Also to quote this government article “The CIA admitted in 1998 that guerilla armies it actively supported in Nicaragua were smuggling illegal drugs into the United States-drugs that were making their way onto the streets of inner-city black neighborhoods in the form of crack cocaine. The CIA also admitted in the midst of The War on Drugs, it blocked law enforcement efforts to investigate illegal drug networks that were helping to fund it’s covert war in Nicaragua” https://www.governor.nh.gov/sites/g/files/ehbemt336/files/documents/20200819-gilles-bissonnette-new-jim-crow-exerpt.pdf

Damn I genuinely will read all of this. I've a few black american friends, and tonnes of american friends in general (fanily too), so it's important to educate myself on this.

The girls were so affected by Wallace's death that they barely spoke for about 20 minutes after it.

For real… I wish I could say the show gets easier… Thought their discussion was very thoughtful. Love how sensitive they are to Dee, Bodie and Poot

Being a Black woman I can tell you that this is something that is known and taught to us all throughout our childhoods. I knew this was the reason way before it started actually being taught in schools and documentaries came out. It's such a heartbreaking thing to know because of how effective it was, like it actually worked and continues to work they just don't use the outright propaganda but it still happens and to know that is traumatizing and disheartening.

The war on drugs was, in the words of Nixon himself, started to silence his political opponents (hippies and black/brown people) during the vietnam war who were protesting against him and creating true revolutionary movements. The fact that this country is still waging a dead mans war is asinine, but we have progressed even farther. The prison industrial complex is a self sustaining machine, raking in billions of dollars off of the slave labor of incarcerated Americans. At the same time they make the world no better, outright refusing to address any root causes of addiction, and instead punishing people who suffer. In the process we limit someone's options for legal work, only further incentivizing escapism through their addictions. Its a self-fulfilling prophecy that has become the backbone of pain for entire generations of Americans and its absolutely disgusting.

Appreciate your honest and thoughtful reply, as a white man I don’t wanna pretend for a second like I can understand what life in America is like for anyone who isn’t a white man. Despite growing up in a majority black city and having family/friends/partner who are black I was mostly clueless about the extent of systemic racism and police racial bias probably till I was a young teen. Arab and Black family members who dealt with disgusting police behavior helped to open my clueless eyes… I think what scares me the most right now is how hell bent places like Florida and Texas are on taking EVEN MORE of this information out of public schools (I know most of this was never taught in public schools anyway) with these states no longer requiring that the civil rights movement and women’s suffrage are taught… that’s just the beginning of the awful fascistic stuff going on… Really wanna believe more and more clueless kids/adults can have their eyes opened to the truth but the country is going in a scarier direction than I could have imagined…

space1999

Right!?! Like this has literally been stated to be the case and there’s all the information in the world to back all of these truth but people are just so willfully ignorant. It gave me hope to see so many states working to abolish private prisons but really the cycle just shows no signs of letting up. The fact that prisoners have voting rights taken away is even further incentive for more incarcerations which I think we’re gonna see more and more of to influence future elections now that Republicans don’t have a leg to stand on One state proposed a bill to have prisoner’s time reduced if they were willing to offer their organs to the state… which is horrifying to think about and would lead to more arrests then ever…

I truly worry for the future too my friend. I only foresee two bleak options I pray can be avoided at this rate. The division amongst Americans and the prevalence/growth of fascistic rhetoric in this country is truly alarming, and i hope that we can reach a solution that does not involve either appeasement or conflict. I struggle to imagine that the future holds neither, but I hope upon hopes that an avenue enlightens itself.

I know politicians I trust in my state are gonna try harder than ever to push for blue votes in rural areas… hoping we can all just try our best to influence things locally and educate younger people about fascist rhetoric Sending good thoughts to you and your loved ones

It's really not that bad. I wouldn't fret about it. The word ''fascist'' gets thrown around too much.

space1999

I mean… I don’t know what America you live in but so many things are absolutely awful rn and looking like they’ll get worse… There are absolutely politicians and citizens who are vying for a fascist government. People literally stormed the capital to prevent voting from being secured. There is absolutely a culture of nationalism and militarism that’s existed for years and years is still growing with more more people attacking the rights of women, queer people, people of color Florida and Texas are absolutely enacting fascist behavior, altering textbooks and banning books and not requiring that kids in public schools learn about the civil rights movement or women’s suffrage. This isn’t even touching on a lot of other things going on in those states including the number of law enforcement officers with prior felonies and histories of violence being brought in. There was even legislation being proposed to prevent kids from talking about periods in school We literally had an authoritarian president who insisted he get his way and denied reality Article below lists the characteristics of fascist government and why DeSantis, MTG and Trump fall under them with their behavior and policies https://www.sltrib.com/opinion/commentary/2023/05/05/commentary-is-ron-desantis-fascist/
