This case seems to be giving Reacher trouble, at least when it comes to controlling his emotions.

Reacher's patience has clearly reached it's final thin threads with this case. Lester clearly spots the trouble and knows this whole situation has been a pain for him, but for his boss it's clearly reached a critical point. He might not be able to overpower Reacher if he's truly gone into a "Berserker State" where rational thought shuts down, emotions boil like lava, and physical ability become maximized . . . but if he thinks and acts fast he might be able to get to Reacher by reminding him that A) the jerk is cuffed and in custody, B) there are civilians present + C) there are a mother and kids present, D) He can't keep helping others effectively if he loses his badge over this, and E) once the courts have "grilled" the jerk for all he's worth, they can always string him up for a punching bag later to vent their frustrations out on.

Reacher's partner (forgot the name) better talk him down quick, he's getting ready to cross a line he can't come back from. The 'chef' is in custody: he's cuffed, he's on the floor, he cannot escape or fight back. He's helpless. Reacher's job at this point is to PROTECT the son of a motherless goat and deliver him to the courts, where he will be judged and sentenced.

Rcacher is the "catch them and bring them in" portion of the justice system. His role is not to be Judge, Jury and Executioner. The ones who resisted with deadly force were "clean kills," they were trying to end him and/or his partner and the only way to stop their deadly force was with deadly force. The rich bastard is a little of a gray area, but I believe all witnesses will agree that there was little that Reacher could do to protect the a-hole from Momma. "Her sudden attack was unexpected, and her first blow was lethal." (That's the story and they're stickin' to it.) Butchering the "chef" when he's in custody is murder, plain and simple. Even if all the witnesses cover it up, Reacher will always remember it, and it will always haunt him, either making him hesitate in a life-or-death situation, or being his first step on the path to being a Dark Knight, a monster that is barely tolerated as long as he focuses on hunting other monsters, but it won't be long before he effectively lives down to his reputation as a marauder who eats his victims alive. That's the down side of being a paladin, you are not allowed to have normal human emotions in inhumane circumstances; the Shining Armor must never be allowed to tarnish, even if it means he has to swallow his rage until he can get back to base and burn up a month's worth of training ammunition at the range rendering the targets to confetti, screaming his indignation with language so strong it peels the paint off the armored walls.
