Go go go bg artist, shine bright like a burning star!

This artist might quickly outpace the character design artist, but that's probably okay. Gonna move a bit more of April's production budget towards this guy, because having a strong foundation of scenes for the start of this project is absolutely not a bad thing. This one's just a simple hall right now, I figure it can be one of several that connect the more critical locales. This one in particular will feature the upper level's entrance to the Atrium.

Asking him for Brian's hotel room next, gonna see if he can do us up the same room design in both a daylight and nighttime lighting versions. ?(???)?

Please leave your thoughts down below! What are some critical early-story places that need backgrounds as a priority?

( AnimeCon Harem Eroge )

That small cafe where Brian and Stephanie eat overpriced food?

FortySixtyFour

I've really been on the fence about that one. It's a critical standalone scene, but has lower overall utility for the eroge. They DO revisit it briefly with Foxy and Mary later on though, and I can definitely find some kickass coffeeshop chalk signboard refs with crazy prices and some cafe decor, though...

I think that's why I was thinking about it too. It's a location that gets used at least twice. I might suggest making a couple different halls for the con center and at least one generic panel room. The hotel lobby for room check-in. Heh, I'm sure you've got a list already though. :D

FortySixtyFour

Just a vague pile of ideas, really. I was thinking "convention entrance" where I picture a big open sort of feature with lots of glass that might include registration and weapons checks kiosks, possibly have the cafe entrance drawn into it. Definitely at least one vendor's room background, probably a four way intersection between different kinds of booths?

Vendor hall, for sure. I like the intersection idea, then it could be reused as often as possible given not a lot of action takes place in the vendor's hall. Convention Entrance area would be good, that's seen a couple times. You know, if anything, I'd say get at least 3-4 shots for the hotel room, since a lot happens there (bathroom, two angles of the main room).

...I feel like a weird creeper because I had already been thinking of how to do this in Ren'py myself. I'm glad you've taken up the flag for it, given it's not really my place as a ready to infringe on your intellectual property. :P

Multiples of the hotel room is really in favor of kinetic-novel style where it follows the story, grabbing up additional scenes of the convention center itself leans in favor of visual-novel style where players can more freely explore AnimeCon. I absolutely want to do both, but focusing on both so early on here might be unwise. Oof, decisions, decisions...

True, that is a difficult decision. Do you go more 'kinetic' where the game follows the story closer with some choices here and there for whoever you are in the head of, but primarily follow the story as is? Or do you make it more free form, allowing the player to explore the con and give a tree of choices over the course of the game? I guess this choice is based on how you feel about building up one or the other (single, long strands of story Kinetic style, or something with a massive tree of choices and consequences). This is not to say one is better than the other. Higurashi and Umineko prove how well received simple kinetic novels can be. Steins;Gate and the like show how decisions could lead down truly twisting paths that you’d have to replay to see something else. I’m not sure which would be easier for you (or what you want in the end), but regardless what you go with… I can’t wait to be there when it’s done.
