Hi all,

We finally have the next dev log ready for you.

To speed things up, I employed an automatic filter to remove silences for the monologue. It works OK but some words are cut. Sorry about that.

happy new year!

Happy New Year! We hear your frustration and are continually impressed by your professional attitude and approach to developing FurryVNE. Even if you feel you're not as far into the project as you'd like to be you guys have accomplished so much and we will continue to support you!

Mobius Scarf

Sorry to hear about the Patreon support being in a bit of a slump. Still, I recall the Patreon support slumping before the first FurryVNE release exactly three years ago, and then support exploded. While I know you're still a few months away (at least) before having the first interactions build out, but I'm confident you'll see another surge of support when you do. In the meantime, the rest of us will keep spreading the word.

Unity doing the classic big company bs, Amazing work so far and regarding the potential issues with your implementation of the SDF baker, You have my full support and I have the utmost confidence that you can push through this and the other problems that may arise. Love you all and have a great New years!

SteelCrow13

Just upgraded my membership, hope it helps! I'm really impressed that you fixed the SDF baker poblem yourselves (though I am no programmer and don't fully understand what you're talking about most of the time so take that for what it's worth.) Also love watching these softbody tech demos, I can see a lot of potental there!

Unity didn't fix the memory leak because they probably don't know how.

Looks like Unity is becoming a standard Silicon Valley company; most of the employees are bloat that just gunks up the works by focusing on ensuring their employment remains secure (which includes such classics as taking credit for any work done and blaming any failures on the rest of their team), frustrating the efforts of actually productive employees who either wind up quitting or becoming bitter, spiteful curmudgeons who do the absolute bare minimum to stay employed. No wonder nothing’s getting done on time or up to standard if things have gotten bad enough on the corporate intrigue side there. Best we can hope for is that the current and coming financial troubles leads to them cleaning house of the bad actors, but I wouldn’t count on it; often the bloat is aware of that inevitability and has done their level best to make themselves unfireable, so instead they’ll get rid of their last few remaining semi-productive staff instead, essentially slitting their own throat open so they can breathe just a few moments longer. Such is the feudal order of things in big corporations, unfortunately. Good to hear you managed to hack together a homebrew solution that’s almost as good as their official one, though. With some more work, hopefully it will grow to surpass theirs and we can all gloat and laugh at the big boy company for being upstaged by one Swedish dude who wasn’t about to let some lazy stuffed suits get in the way of his fun. I think you might need to start double-timing and cutting corners to get the interactions done, though, as much as I hate to say it and I’m sure you hate to hear it. Times are tough on all of us and likely to only get tougher for the foreseeable future, so none of us really have the luxury of taking our sweet time to see results anymore. Most people are primarily interested in finally getting to the fucking with this project (sex sells, ain’t no getting around that fact), so if you want a big increase in financial support, you’re gonna have to deliver that part of the equation sooner rather than later. The silver lining is people generally invest their limited money in games and other entertainment in times of financial downturn, and the current offerings of the mainstream industries are so utterly garbage that people are turning to whatever alternatives they can find en masse, so prospects are fairly good once you do get the interactions delivered and people are likely to tolerate imperfect implementations so long as you’re responsive in fixing any issues that crop up. I’d up my pledge to help you out right this second, but I’m feeling the squeeze too so I’m gonna have to wait and see how my financial situation looks in the immediate future before making any rash decisions. I do suddenly find myself with considerably more free time on my hands however, so if you happen to be in need of the services of a second-rate 2D/3D artist who is badly out of practice but willing to pitch in for free until such time as the revenue stream flows more happily again, hit me up. Oh, and Happy new year to us all, come hell or high water!

Craket

Nice! I know you wanted something even better for fvne, but honestly, this compromise is more than enough for 99% of us. Also, ive said this many times before. Getting to that interactions bit is gonna most likely skyrocket patreon members up as well as pirating, which is more word of mouth, etc. The more the merrier. I can only wish more luck to you! While that is happening, I have a job to finish up before you get interactions up. I know most people are gonna be happy about this as well... I hope!

I don't think they don't know how to, they just don't care or it's a case of "somebody else's problem". Alternatively, maybe they outsourced it to some poor intern who has no idea what they're doing. Either way, it's unprofessional and unbecoming of a large tech giant.

BeerCookie

Yeah, but I've not heard good things from unity lately. I do find it very impressive that you were to find a work around fix.

It's a shame about the financial situation. As a patreon creator myself doing 'long term' projects (welcome to godot gang btw 😎), I understand all too well that to grow your support you have to provide substantial content every month. It's just the nature of the platform. Is it still overall better than being bound to a publishing deal, or getting a lump sum from something like kickstarter, idk, but monthly payments for a release that takes years is going to make a lot of people consider the value proposition, especially in tougher times like these. I don't have a whole lot of reach but I'll post screenshots of the characters I make on my socials, and hopefully that'll get someone interested. Which got me thinking. Maybe you could try upping your social media game too? Posting screenshots of characters, if done regularly (several times a week), could for sure help grow your social media reach. I'm sure you wouldn't have much trouble finding community volunteers to prepare the posts or even run the account. People already consent to all kinds of stuff when their character goes on the cloud, I don't think anyone would be bothered by having their characters act as advertisement for the game for it's betterment.

What people need to consider here is that as far as interactive games in this area of entertainment, its very scarce to find good value in them and its a slow genre for technological progress. Investment toward this is an investment in a genre and if people want a future where they can really explore their fantasies in these kinds of ways, the future simply may not occur without investment. That being said, people that invest in games in early access and other places are sometimes treated to one up front cost and years of free updates. So the level of investment here is much higher than many of their other games already as it is. So people certainly are aware of the value of FurryVNE. But I think banking so much on future potential becomes taxing when they are getting their hands on builds with other projects that they may have only paid $40 once on like say 7 Days to Die and getting massive updated builds to play for free at almost a decade after that investment. But despite that, people really do view this worth investing several hundred dollars over time. Its worth it to me, especially considering a trip to a strip club is gonna be $150-$200. I've probably invested $400-$500 in this and the previous game over the years and I don't regret it. I'm sure its gonna pan out. But I'm also recovering from surgery and on short-term so I can't weigh this wisely as something I need to put an increased rate of money to right now. I will certainly step up my tier when some form of interactions become available. Now if you could give us a tangible set of deadlines to work with I may consider doing it earlier. If say you pitched it as, 'if we can get an increased funding of x amount, we intend to have a working build out by April with some form of interactivity usable between characters, however, if we can't secure greater investment, it likely may not be until October,' I would increase it in February onward. I understand though that that could be playing with our hearts if that target isn't made and many would pull back in May with more frustration if that didn't pan out. I'm glad you guys are determined to keep to it even in the case of having to extend deadlines and get other means of financial support. I am very excited about this project and I want to invest in a future for this type of entertainment so I'm happy with it. But I can't personally weigh it worth an increase at the moment. Now one suggestion is perhaps you could make another tier on Patreon. I think this lowest one is like $3 so what if perhaps you do a $6 one with a guarantee for biweekly blogs showing some kind of updates like you are doing. If I got an extra video every month of just showing progress or even just more examples of what's going on or work in progress ideas even ones that may be abandoned later, I think I would increase my tier. Even if you're just having fun with physics with a silly demo or something, I think the additional entertainment of that or insight adds tangible value to perhaps increase investment for some. But maybe I'm the only one who sees it that way who knows. I just think people at $3 need to have more but $12 character editors aren't selling them enough. Maybe think out of the box and make silly little things to tide people over like mini-game builds like perhaps a usable tennis ball launcher to launch at butts to test collisions or be able to throw characters off ledges to test gravity and things. I just feel like there needs to be more now and not later to get people to invest more now somehow. However, I personally haven't even tried one of the builds yet at all so I don't know exactly what I'm missing. So actually, perhaps you could sum up what's currently available for the current builds because as far as I know, its just a couple of poses and a bunch of sliders for body types and head parts. I hope for the best and hope you find a way to persuade people, but if not and you have to get more work, that's understandable completely.

Sunlight Swift, Thanks for the kind words and your suggestions. It's true that FurryVNE should, at this point, be seen as an investment rather than a finished product, and that being the case it's understandable why there's a lot of people holding off until there's actual playable content. We are aware of that. We are, as a matter of fact, betting our futures on this presumption. I was actually reluctant to beg for more financial support, because I knew the majority of those willing to pay us would be those who are already supporters, and I feel we have no right to ask more of those that have already given us so much. But in the end the facts are what they are - unless a project receives funding, development cannot continue. Things aren't critical, yet, but they are (were) getting there. Hopefully the message we put out can sustain us long enough for us to be able to get the interactions out, and once they do we (hopefully) garner more support. The tiers are definitely something we want to revamp a bit, and I think it's something we'll get to once interactions release. Currently, we feel we don't want to rock the boat too hard though, as we have so many other concerns we need to contend with. The problem with providing more content on Patreon in the form of videos, texts or even builds of sorts is that they cut into the development of the actual app itself, prolonging the release of interactions. Just look at the latest dev-log. That essentially took a week to record material for, edit and publish. That's a week of time that could have been spent on interactions! Of course I'm not suggesting we shouldn't provide any content or updates at all, but what I'm trying to say is that we are devs, first and foremost, and as devs, all we want to do is develop our project. Time taken away from that is stressful and in the end may even hurt us if it pushes interactions release further back. Thanks again for your support and your words. We are doing our best and hopefully we'll have something out soon enough for people to continue supporting the project. All the best. - odes

I believe what you are doing is smart and you are taking all the right choices. I've never made videos so I imagine it can be quite a bit more work than I would assume. Thanks for the response
