Today the main work to enable Leap Motion was completed and this initial support will appear in 1.16 release. While Leap Motion is not perfect, it can be fun and add a new level of presence and interaction. Shown here are physically based hands that can receive collision feedback from the skin and other objects. Leap did not include these kinds of hands, so this had to be done custom which took some time and lots of experimentation to get right. The results of this work are hands that feel more real and don't push through everything or cause giant Physx explosions when they spawn in or lose tracking. For those that don't have Leap Motion or don't plan to get it, these hands-only models will also work with regular VR motion controllers. You can use the trigger to control grip similar to how Person hand possess works now. Several hand models and skins will be included in the release. There is still more that can be done with hands models and scene interaction, but it is unclear how much will get done for 1.16 so no further comments on those things for now.

There will be more information posted on 1.16 later in the week.  A bit of work to improve Animation Patterns has also been completed to make them easier to work with by reducing clutter. You can always check the Trello board to see what is going on or join the Discord server where these is a lot of great conversation and community.

Thank all of you for the ongoing support. This project is amazing to work on, but it can also be challenging and tiring at times, so the continued support and words of encouragement are greatly appreciated to help keep the engine running.

The problem now is whether the leap motion has enough inventory.

An existing third-party plug-in had already been developed by a VaM user to make this possible...is this an improved+official version of that, or simply just an official/now-included option?

Anonymous

dude... you seriously roxx!!! I am a fan of your programming skills!!!!

Does It can work with other "things" besides your hands?

No Thanks

Epic. Just bought a Leap Motion for this specifically

No Thanks

Also, any way you can add the forearm on there for immersion? Actually, I could see how that could be difficult getting the position correct. The best example I've seen is Lone Echo - something to think about later maybe. I'm just stoked for this whole thing

It looks amazing, makes me wanna but Leap Motion :D

Clayfacer

nice. addition. this is most use I will get with the leap motion.

great , keep up the good work :)

meshedvr

You know that is a brilliant idea. Let me see if I can add in some hands that are not exactly hands!

So does this work when possessing a character or would it only work for the floating hands?

Hey Meshed VR. I just resumed pledging (had to pause for a while because finances were uncertain) and I'm in awe with all the progress that's been made. Yesterday, I was fiddling with the in-app browsing and downloading custom models, and that got me wondering something : I recently lost all my personal creation. It's okay, I will create again (and learn to properly backup them). However, I don't know how custom models work. For now they seem to be stored in the "download" folder. I can choose one, save its look to "my" folder with my own collection, however, how will all the attached files (custom textures and such) stay with my model ? Should I move those files to my "looks" folder ? Should they remain in the downloads folder ? Thank you in advance, whoever sees this and takes the time to enlighten me !

meshedvr

I'm going to attempt to make it work with possession, but this might not make 1.16. I have some of what is required completed to make it work, but there are a few more hurdles.

meshedvr

If you save a look with custom textures, that look save json file will have a reference to the image that lives in the download area. As long as you don't remove the original image or move it, the look will work. If you were to try to share the look with someone else, this is where there would be an issue due to that reference. It would be best to save the look as a packaged (vac) scene if you want to share it. Part of the package process is to seek out all referenced images and localize them and package them.

This is very impressive! Great job!👏

Well, I had a leap laying around, but didn't find any interesting use for it. Now I just ordered a mount. Damn you Meshed, you're pushing the whole VR economy upwards :P

Great with the advances to interaction. I considered buying a Leap, but I see no other use for it, so I was pleased to read that the new hands/interaction works with the Oculus controllers.

Clayfacer

can you add tool detection for the leap?😉

meshedvr

Oculus hands interaction for this release is going to work just like they do with possess mode where it only changes grip based on trigger input. At some point I will try to incorporate the finger poses that Oculus (and future vive knuckles) support for more pose choices.

Big booty!

Hi Meshed, When you make the leap motion to work with hand possession, is it possible to still allow the Touch controllers to be able to posses other part of the body? That way, people with Oculus touch can finally have two trackers for feet movement while using Leap motion for hand possession :)

Hello, my question is off topic, but I am looking for GPU benchmarks of VaM. Does the rendering engine perform better on AMD or Nvidia GPUs? I am considering getting a RTX 2080 (Ti) or a Vega VII. A GTX 1070 is often to slow for hi-res VR rendering.

Strauzek

Make a function of redo and undo pls.

meshedvr

This will be coming in future release, but it won't be perfect due to real-time physics nature of VaM. Some things won't be able to be undone.

I was using 1070 and now I upgraded to rtx2080 and saw good performance increase. I have tried RTX2080ti which is 35% faster than 2080. But I only noticed small amount of performance increase in VAM. I am not sure if there is CPU bottle neck going from 2080 to 2080ti?

is leap motion available for oculus rift?

Anonymous

Yes, Leap is seen as a separate controller independent of the headset used.

Anonymous

can i use my regular controller simultaneously with the leap motion?

AnonymousPony

How does the Leap Motion controller work in a VR environment? I checked out the controller on Amazon and it looks like it is something that you place on the desk. Another user commented that the your hands can only be 10" away.

AnonymousPony

nvm, answered my own question with a simple search. lol. For anybody else that's interested in knowing how this works with Vive: <a href="https://developer.leapmotion.com/vr-setup/vive" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://developer.leapmotion.com/vr-setup/vive</a>

I can't wait until we get gloves that give us feeling in this new world.

Extraordinary work... so very cool. Just bought a Leap Motion for my own hobby VR projects. Looking forward to "feeling my way around" VaM :)

No news on the Knuckles for GDC.. makes me consider getting this. Cool stuff.
