Thanks for waiting guys! :D

If you don't recognize this character, it's Caitlin Fairchild, poster girl of a beloved yet short-lived comic from like 25 years ago called Gen 13.

And yet despite Gen 13's flash-in-the-pan status in pop culture history, I doubt a lot of you needed me to tell you who this character was. That comic was huge for awhile there, and artist J. Scott Campbell's amazingly sexy characters were a major part of that success if you ask me. His run on the comic was heart-breakingly short however, and the minute an issue dropped without him as penciler, the series was pretty much done. There must be a story there, as I always wondered why he left such a popular IP at its peak, if you know what went down behind the scenes I'd love to hear about it in the comments.

Anyhow Fairchild was my favorite. I always tended to gravitate toward team leaders, (especially tall busty red headed ones) and I liked the idea that this 90-pound bookworm could throw a car.

I do know that DC Comics bought up Image awhile back. And, as far as I've seen anyway, Fairchild here is the only member of the old Gen 13 squad they've actually taken off the bench and put in a story. I understand she's a supporting character in Superboy comics now. It's cool that she's still around, but from the pics I've seen it seems pretty clear that she's a different character these days. From what I can tell they re-imagined it so her super strength actually makes her Hulk out and grow physically in size. That's fine I suppose, but not in line with the version of the character I have nostalgia for.

What do you think? Do I have any idea what I'm talking about here? If you have any Gen 13 info it's probably news to me. Let me know in the comments! :)

I remember watching a cartoon of this a while back. All I remember was a stupid plot twist, hating one of the characters and Mark Hamill as the bad guy.

Reinbach

I didn't see the cartoon, but I've seen what the animation looked like and yeah, didn't seem to be an impressive package overall. XD

I think my favorite incarnation of Gen13 is the reboot Gail Simone wrote around 2007. Having a writer who's really funny, and likes her superheroes to be slightly trashy and very horny was a great fit for the book. Too bad it didn't last longer.

Reinbach

I didn't even know about that one. I may have to go looking for it.

Bob Fink

Not familiar with the comic, but she's one very bust babe and I love how that costume fits so snugly in the right places. :D

HiberniaScholar

In the original run she started as the book worm computer genius and when her superpowers were activated she became the two meter tall bodacious babe we know so well. The one good thing about the one off animated movie was the scene where her physical change happens and her curves and proportions burst through her clothes. That awakened a few things.

They relaunched Gen 13 in 2006ish and it had its good point, went off the rails with as post-apocalyptic thing though, most of the characters changed in different ways than in the original Volume (Rainmaker was just a lesbian rather than Bi, Grunge was secretly smart on Caitlin's level or more etc) and it tried to allude to it being set in the same continuity as they original volume despite the way the first Volume ended with the Gene-Bomb.

Fuck I love FairChild! If you did a Hardcore Pinup of her, I wouldn't kick it out of bed for eating crackers!

Reinbach

Right, I never saw the movie, but I do remember her busting out of her clothes in the comics. Though that may have just been on one of the covers.

That black guy

I know gen 13, also know her from the n52 iteration where she was Superboy's keeper for a bit

Reinbach

I saw some pictures of that when I was looking up reference for her costume. (Incidentally, there doesn't seem to be a set standard for her. Even Campbell himself moves around what's green and what's purple from pic to pic.) I wasn't a fan of big&thick Fairchild, but I can imagine there are a lot of people who like it.

Reinbach

Well I haven't done Rainmaker yet, maybe I'll do a Gen 13 orgy someday. :D

alex baker

love it, did you ever see the animated movie?

Reinbach

Ah my mistake. And yeah now that you mention it there are a few similarities there.

alex baker

it's the first volume of the comic, it was clearly suppose to be a pilot. but if you like the comic you should see it

Didn't this thing run to 50 issues even after Campbell left? If memory serves me, Adam Warren wrote a huge number of issues (only drew a handful, sadly) and I remember it surviving long enough that Chris Claremont came on board and killed the series by going full Chris Claremont on it. In other words, he killed off the entire established cast with a nuke and brought in a bunch of all-new characters of his own creation. That formula may have worked once with the X-Men, but it didn't work with the Willow sequel novels he wrote and it didn't work here. Adam Warren drew the last few issues as an apology to the fans, but by that point there weren't any of them left.

Reinbach

Well, outside of text references, (like Morgan and Warren arguing about real world PS1 games) I try to keep TRW in it's own universe. But, I did kinda fall in love with this hairstyle while drawing this, so don't be surprised if you see a TRW character who looks like Caitlin someday in the future.

Reinbach

I heard about those Willow novels! Thankfully I caught wind of how they wrote them before I wasted money on a story that I and pretty much anyone else who liked the movie would have hated. As for Gen13, to be fair I should have worded it that when Campbell left, that was when me and pretty much everyone else I knew lost interest, I have no idea how his departure affected actual sales or popularity. I can only speculate that it had a negative impact.

Campbell is the reason i became an artist and Fairchild is the reason I have a soft spot for redheads, a Gen 13 hardcore comic with the whole team, now that would be tits!

From his panel at Megacon, Jscott left due to very heated differences between himself and Jim lee. During Jim Lee's peak popularity and the waning of WIldstorm studios Jim bought out JScotts ownership of the franchise and it caused him to leave as he was disappointed in himself he didn't fight harder to retain control of the characters. Soon afterwards Jim Lee used his full ownership of most of Wildstorm's IPs for leverage to make the move over to DC where they now own the series in full. The last canonical appearance of Gen13 was in the New52 relaunch where they were unceremoniously killed off as characters and other than special anniversary appearances from guests artists here and there that's where the series ended.
