This was fun to watch again. A very particular emotional headspace. Simone is correct about the lust in that elevator scene. You said at the start that Bill was the bigger star but at the time this was seen as something of a comeback. Aside from Wes Anderson movies his career had turned to novelty cameos and b-movies. This was the beginning of people taking him seriously as a serious actor. Being John Malkovich is amazing and Cameron Diaz is the best she ever was in that movie. Rushmore and The Life Aquatic are both incredible Bill Murray movies.

What he whispered in her ear was what she needed to hear...

There is most common transription (which doesn't mean 100% truth) "Me wehe au, engari e kore ahau e tuku i tera i waenganui i a tatou, e pai?" I translate it to maori to not spoil it for someone, so use google translate)

If you guys enjoyed this one I think you would also really enjoy Before We Go which is a very similar take.

Bill Murray was 52 at the time of this filming and Scarlett Johansson was 17(!). So the song Anna Faris is singing (badly) is “Nobody Does it Better” originally recorded by Carly Simon for the 1977 Roger Moore James Bond movie “The Spy Who Loved Me.” Remember, Bill Murray mentions Sean Connery as Bond but the Japanese commercial director apparently preferred Roger Moore. Connery made a Bond movie in Japan “You Only Live Twice” in 1967. Roger Moore never made a James Bond movie in Japan, though he did make “The Man With the Golden Gun” elsewhere in Asia.

"Limerence" is a term that best describes the relationship in this film. "Limerence is a state of mind which results from romantic or non-romantic feelings for another person, and typically includes intrusive, melancholic thoughts, or tragic concerns for the object of one's affection as well as a desire to form or maintain a relationship with the object of love and to have one's feelings reciprocated. Limerence can also be defined as an involuntary state of intense desire for someone, marked by intrusive thoughts and a desire for a relationship and reciprocation. " In one way it's just a more professional way to say "crush", but I feel it's a bit more subtle. Bob and Charlotte are drawn to each other, but they both know they can't take it as far as they would if things were different. There's a fundamental gap between them that keeps what they have special. If they actually got together, it wouldn't be the same as the comfort they have found in each other during a very difficult period and place they currently feel trapped in, and they both know it, so things have to stay unspoken. It's a really delicately told relationship between them, I really love this film for it. It's the first time I've watched it in about 10 years and I definitely got a very different experience from watching it at this point in my life than when I was in my early 20s. It's a very beautiful film.

I love this movie, it's unique and authentic, love me a good indie. Speaking of which, I have to recommend a couple of movies, but just for personal viewing, not for the channel because they're obscure and wouldn't do well on YT, pretty sure. Nevertheless I love these movies and I think you might like them too: GHOST WORLD, with an even younger Scar Jo, a quirky, odd little movie about a couple of teenage girls, sort of a coming of age movie but for art class nerds like me, I think it's based on a comic book/graphic novel; and... BROKEN FLOWERS, a Jim Jarmusch directed movie with Bill Murray as an aging, i think the term is "lothario", who goes on a quest to find out if one of his many ex-girlfriends had a child by him, it's funnier than it sounds, and I love the quirky soundtrack. Quirky is the theme here of course 😆

My favorite Bill Murray movie is definitely The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Such an underrated gem, peak Murrayness.

You guys seriously need to CHILL with the pre-movie conversation. 13 minutes talking about nothing is ridiculous. Just play the damn movie.

Just skip forward if you don't want to listen.... Not sure what the problem is?
