While it takes place a few centuries later, I prefer "Rob Roy" as a Scottish historical film. Starring Liam Neeson, Tim Roth, John Hurt, and Jessica Lange. Unlike "Braveheart", it was actually shot in Scotland and some locations could only be reached by helicopter, so the scenery is breathtaking much of the time.

i cant see you doing it, because its so obscure, but theres a similar story called Riel. its about louis riel the metis leader. he lead the last revolt against the british here in canada during the british take over of the french colony. extra points because its introduced by william shatner lol. im metis. its been a while since ive seen it, and since have done a lot of research into my families history (we are descended from his brother), but from memory it includes a lot of the major points. it can be found in a bay thats been known to host pirates. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079810/

I love this movie so much. I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. And yes, James Cosmo as Campbell (Hamish's dad) is indeed one of the most badass characters ever. Don't worry Simone, nobody understands Hollywood battles. Back in my day we didn't run into battle, that's exhausting. You walked in a vaguely orderly formation towards the enemy and tried to keep a clear understanding of where your friends were. You didn't want to be surrounding into a chaotic brawl. Hollywood battles are to real battles what bar fights are to a martial arts contest. Sure they're vaguely similar but a lot less organized and generally a lack of skills by those involved.

Really enjoyed this one. Although massive parts of the movie are fictitious for the sake of a gripping story. The mood and tone definitely captured the brutality of the English empire which continued to both neighboring countries and beyond for many centuries after this. If your interested in more modern examples, check out The Wind That Shakes the Barley or Michael Collins. Both focus on Ireland's play for independence from British rule in the early 20th century.

I'm definitely not a history buff (especially English) but I'm pretty sure England has been ruled by quite a few Kings who weren't English by blood. King Richard (the "good" King in Robin Hood Stories) was actually pretty shit and spent most of his time in France or on crusades. Only went to England a handful of times in his entire life.
