Ocean City Streets (Part 1/3) - Toy Store (Patreon)

After several months of covering open-air drug markets in San Francisco, Philadelphia, and beyond, we decided to take a more lighter tone and check out the beautiful beach town of Ocean City, New Jersey - which has been under strict prohibition since the 1890s.

In this episode, we take the Callaghan Cousins to a toy store and speak with a town historian. Next episode will be an in-depth deep dive into the 'Temperance Movement,' with my grandma, Mom Mom.

This is so dope, I visited this town all growing up and saw this happen while growing up. There used to be massive beach parties that used to be posted on a IG or Snapchat account which is what started all of this. Kids from a group of at least 50-100 would travel beach to beach just moving from when cops would try to catch everyone for underage drinking etc. not only that but also being there the cops are super super wild. They accused me and a fellow friend of trying to break into his car because he was Hispanic when he had the keys and saw us lock the car. He initial accused us of doing a drug deal and when we emptied our pockets and said we are staying at a house a couple houses up he proceeded to call backup and made us sit while 2 other cops in separate cars came. This whole process took 2 hours while they sat there trying ti get something out of us. Not only that but they also have programs in place there because of how many kids get caught with substances that you can just do community service for two weekends.

So great that you covered this tho, this past year we visited my little brother almost got the cops called on him by the tenants of the house above us for smoking weed because he’s a light skin kid. They said nothing to me and my girlfriend or my brother while I was with him. However as soon as he was alone they all attacked him and his GF, 3 adults versus them.

Do you seriously think he can put that much effort into creating an entire high-quality docuseries, and not release it on YouTube for monetization? He'll obviously need to release it on YouTube after putting that much time and resources into the project. You should be on Patreon because you want to financially support independent journalism. Why would you even care if others get to see it too? Plus, there is exclusive content on here, from smaller projects of his.

I hope you can cover redlining more! People don’t know how recently it was allowed. Redlining lead to minorities not being able to build wealth by owning property. Today, people in redlined areas are still renters. They have no say over if their homes/apartment buildings are sold. Therefore, if investors want to buy it up and gentrify, the people living there have no say. I’ve seen it happen so many times working in home lending in Pittsburgh. It makes me sick.

As an Atlantic County native who grew up on the Ocean City boardwalk, as I got older I became a lot more jaded of the town I used to love as a kid. Everything is marketed and priced to rich white Shoobies (Philly tourist) and far-right Republican and white nationalists hate groups openly advertise along the boardwalk!!! if you spot a black family walking the boards chances are they’re the only people of color you’ll see that day.

I know you’re going for a lighter topic but it’s super interesting to me that Ocean City is only 20 minutes away from Atlantic City/ Pleasantville. I just think of all the homeless in freezing in AC during the winter when there is an island of empty houses so close.

Holy shit. As an Irish catholic who grew up outside of Philly and goes to temple. And works “down the shore” living with my mum mum in ocnj every summer these past few episodes have been hitting home for me. I work at blitz’s 21st street. It’s very weird 2 bc in the winter it becomes a ghost town. She is heavy into the drawls of Alzheimer’s and is no longer the grandma I once knew. And the isolation and loneliness with the death of my grandfather and most of her friends has sent her into a state of depression for sure. If you ever wanted to interview her it would be mad funny though she has some crazy takes as a teacher for 40 years

Came here directly after the youtube post, I always think about how your interactions over the last two episodes have probably been the first time these people have been interacted with like a human being & it makes me extremely sad for society, as well as makes me wonder about how the rest of their days were after said interaction in terms of their mental state (not in a negative sense). Thank you for documenting what we don't see & treating these people as human beings, as a Bay Area native living in another part of the state ravaged by the disease we know as addiction it truly means a lot.

Hey Andrew not sure if you’ll see this or who reads your comments but my name is also Andrew. I’m 21, from Linwood and Somers Point, the towns off of the ninth street bridge leaving ocean city. A lot of my family has grown up in the area. I was a lifeguard in Atlantic City and Ocean city. I used to work on the lifeguard stand in this video, the surfing beach. Quit after the beach patrol predator scandal as well as being underpaid. I could be of use for some info or maybe help you get in contact with people. Had to sub when I saw you were doing a series on Ocean City. For a winter after college I moved there with my mom who was raised there/Philly and it was just the strangest thing to me (coming from California, then St. Louis before that). The way you have to go all the way across the bridge and the first thing on the other side was a liquor store and a bar was too funny. Weirdest winter of my life, every place in your video I've been to but in the off season. Can't wait to see the rest!
