Hola!

Here's our second episode covering the ongoing crisis at the U.S./Mexico Border.

We began our coverage by investigating the allegedly 'closed' port of entry in Gringo Point, AZ, and speak with a few migrants of Mexican origin, then were pointed in the direction of a migrant processing center hidden in the Sonoran Desert.

In this episode, we'll show you an in-depth look at the way this processing center functions, as well as interview a variety of migrants of Senegalese and Mexican origin along the border wall.

We also got the chance to speak to a uniformed Border Patrol Agent, who gave us an audio-only interview.

Despite our disagreements the off-duty law enforcement officer I met in Gringo Pass being the same guy who once pointed me toward Area 51, It seems like you guys are really liking this series and so we've decided to launch a Spanish translation channel called Canal Cinco.

In the coming weeks, we're gonna re-purpose all of the C5 classics (Crip Mac, Satanic Temple Gathering, Will Blunderfield, O Block, Etc) using Spanish voiceovers on a separate channel, as well as scouting for correspondents in Latin America, which I really look forward to.

Anyways, this piece is heavy.. but I hope y'all enjoy.

Best

Finally!

Hell yeah

Anonymous

This amount of people is an invasion but this is the system the leaders made

channel5

invasion - either an instance of an armed force invading a country, or an unwelcome intrusion into another's domain

Anonymous

Any plans to cover what’s going down at Peoples Park in Berkeley right now?

Jason

Just finished the Philly streets series and started this one, holy shit Andrew... absolutely fantastic work!

Holden

Part 3 please

Anonymous

great work Andrew and the Channel 5 team

Anonymous

Every major city’s mayor and our president/VP is discouraging migrants from coming making that an unwelcomed intrusion into their domain

Anonymous

Didn't know Andrew could speak Spanish. I'm impressed.

Chris

That was an interesting watch, I feel bad for the mother at the end, she has a much more optimistic future in her mind than the reality, though I guess for them, almost anything is better than dealing with the Cartel

Chris

The direct definition of it is based on the context that is being used: an instance of invading a country or region with an armed force. It would be like comparing an invasion of privacy to the invasion of Poland, they are very distinctly different yet the word applies to both.

Anonymous

When you said corporate oligarchs I got fucking chills.

Anonymous

I agree those using it are being alarmist when in the context of an armed invasion of a country. What term would be more adequate to describe the cartel facilitated illegal immigration of at least the state of Nevada every year?

Daniel Carroll

Great video as always folks keep up the good work.

Anonymous

idk if they care but you showin a whole lotta faces again frfr. im worried about those moms on the border. 😬

Anonymous

Can I get a $3000 debit card too?

Jeremy Williams

Is that really the same dude from the Area 51 event? Might just be lighting and such but dude has aged pretty badly since that video lmao (no hate just an observation). Kinda hard to believe it's him. Great work btw, y'all have really been in the shit lately covering some important stuff.

Buz Lee

I love how real and heavy handed your stance in this video was. I know you avoid partisanship at all costs but there comes a point where you have to call the bully out to their face.

Steven Broll

Great job, I wish more people would see this side of it all

Anonymous

i wanna know more! keep it nifty channel 5!!

Anonymous

I don't understand how the mother had to spend $12k per person just to get her family to America, couldn't she have just bought a plane ticket?

Aaron M

Let's fucking gooooo!

Anonymous

Great coverage! Was there not a big backlash to Irish immigrants though? I feel like there was a massive nativist response during the Potato Famine since a lot of Americans were protestants and a lot of Irish people were Catholics. Also, I feel there was just so many Irish people coming over that Americans were scared of job security (I guess history definitely repeats itself!).

Anonymous

You need a tourist visa and passport to enter the US and "high risk" people won't get approved. And if your intent is to seek asylum, you need to arrive on us soil first.

peacenluv

these videos are amazing man. i wish more people were able to see them <3

Anonymous

Thanks for the explanation, that makes sense, 12k per person still feels like a crazy amount just to get here

Anonymous

Yo Andrew "Private Security" roughly translates as militia/guerilla fighters Im sure it was lost in translation, but saying you have military experience and want to work private security is like saying you're willing to be a gun for hire...

Andrew R

My pops is from Michoacán, from a small ranch and also made a similar journey to the US. Idk how they hear that the US is so great as when I visited they hardly had any technology. Even then, these low paying jobs in the US allow you to send some money back to those ranchos where it goes a long way.

Anonymous

I think she meant 1.2k. 12k doesn't make sense since she said it was 10k total for the whole trip in the previous sentence.

Anonymous

Damn pretty disappointing to see a rather clear left bias in some of the recent videos. Waffling about "corporate oligarchs" and shit. Very different from the channel 5 vids of the past.

Anonymous

This is top notch journalism. Some of the best I've ever seen.

Owen Degen

Migrant at 7:46 on the right is wearing Yeezys :') "Yeezy 350v2 Butter".

Anonymous

The main difference between the mass immigration in the 1800s (like that from Ireland during the Potato famine) is that we have a pretty big social safety net now. Our legal/illegal immigration system now IS broken for sure, but I think it's a completely fair opinion to have that we need to limit the amount of illegal immigration happening rn since our taxes will be going to help support these people for a good amount of years.

Anonymous

Super insightful. Really great journalism.

Andrew R

Honestly bro open up your mind a little bit. This stuff is meant to challenge your thinking . Even me I didn’t realize how bad the border situation is, but I’m going to maintain a humane perspective on it. Now tell me did that make me more left or right ? Question if you’re not seeing the whole picture.

channel5

I hear you but the “Our tax dollars” thought experiment only emerges during times like this. With or without migrants, our tax dollars aren’t used for really anything good

Anonymous

what did I say that was close minded? All I said was that andrew is taking a pretty clear cut left stance in some of the recent videos.

Anonymous

It doesn't come across a left biases to me. I agree with the comment above, need to keep your mind open to opinions you may not hold yourself. Not get triggered like this, ya know?

Anonymous

Both political parties are bought and paid for. Get your head out of the sand

Anonymous

As always, amazing work Andrew. This series has been eye opening and pretty heavy. I often wonder if immigrants are led to believe life in America is going to be much easier for them than it really will be… when even most native born American citizens struggle so hard these days. Surprised to find out they all get a 3k debit card… that’s wild as well. Either way, stoked for this series and for the next chapter. Also, your Spanish is killer bro.

Anonymous

well whether you think the content is biased or not, I think we can both agree that recent pieces are more opinionated than coverage in the past.

Anonymous

Congrats Andrew great content. Not many people stay objetive and impartial these days to provide a big picture o problems. Also I want to say not every Mexican wants to live on U.S. but certainly people from Michoacán, Zacatecas, Veracruz and Guerrero are living the cartel’s war in frontline, where the crime is the real authority. So it’s understandable her response. Keep like that all the team of channel 5 I love you guys!

Anonymous

Great video 🙌🏼

Anonymous

Holy shit this is good.

Anonymous

Thank you for this. My parents immigrated, and my wife's parents immigrated. The vast majority of humanity seeks security and happiness for their family at all costs.

Anonymous

i might be the only geek to tell you about the dead pixels on your cam but it's fine fuck it. you could shoot this on an iphone 5 for all i care it's good work thank you.

Anonymous

It is and many migrants still pay it and continue to like if it was a student loan because you can be killed and or kidnapped if you dont

Anonymous

No they were right 10k I’d usually what most migrants end up paying their coyote

Anonymous

We have had such a tight labor market that I can't see how we can't all benefit. Let them be gainfully employed and pay into the system, then? I bet you $5 you'd be hard pressed to find an immigrant that wouldn't agree to this.

Anonymous

W video 🔥

Anonymous

If I had to vote for my tax dollar providing an asylum seeker a cell phone vs. bailing out some bank that treated the u.s economy like a casino…. Well I just don’t know…

Anonymous

Good work Andrew. Sheds light on something many people are ignoring

Anonymous

Maybe consider the ways in which “our country” and “our people” are apart of your problem here. It’s americas drug habits that fuel the violence in Mexico - It’s americas banks you have to bail out when they fuck around. Look at the ways big companies avoid taxes entirely - leaving institutions like healthcare and education underfunded. Think about who in this situation is acting out of greed and who is acting out of survival.

Anonymous

Channel 5 - Thank you for the on-the-ground reporting and observant truth sharing over the years. Your content has helped keep many people in my life from radicalizing. I hope those I share this video with will see the humans that are the immigrants, regardless of epoch.

Jeremy

It's incredible to see the sacrifice some of these people make to seek asylum. Will there be a follow up with migrant services in the future? The bureaucracy of this complex situation reminds me a bit of the harm reduction services covered in SF. Not enough resources to fix an issue which is really just a symptom of an even larger issue.

JJ HoriYuko

Great content! I hope you got to interview some Venezuelans. Violence, poverty, and insecurity in the 2010s led to the Venezuelan Diaspora we know today. Many Venezuelans agree with the sanctions instated to strangle the dictatorship we currently face. The expropriation and later mismanagement of our private sector ruined our economy, not the sanctions. Corruption can define these 20+ years living under this dictatorship. The atrocities taking place in Venezuela cannot be ignored. I hope we recover our future and our people can return to their home country. The rumors of these sanctions being lifted to restart oil extraction saddens me.

Anonymous

I don't understand how asylum seekers or anyone crossing like this could contribute to the fentanyl problem if they are walking right into custody to presumably be searched?

Anonymous

great video, subbed to paetron for it

Anonymous

@ajtAwesome With the way you're critical of the bias of others, you should be aware of how apparent the bias is in yourself. The fact that you have "Left bias" and "waffling" in your vocabulary, when talking about corporate oligarchy and of the US government's intentional disruption of developing societies, says a bit more about your ignorance than it does of C5's polarity. It came across matter-of-fact. And if you are assuming facts as bias... Well, there's a learning opportunity here for you.

Anonymous

As a DACA recipient that went though the same process 20 some odd years ago, I can't tell you how much these videos mean to me. Thank you.

Anonymous

I appreciate that you are truly empathetic and not bigoted like many in America about this. But there are so many issues with this. I also want these people to be able to live here and have safety, but we are talking about multiple states populations combined (EST 12 MILLION) in illegal crossings within just 1 year to claim Asylum. Most are coming with close to zero resources to support themselves or their children. We are not going to be building the resources or infrastructure for that long term, as we were not nearly keeping up with the current housing, education and other social services for our population before. We should expedite the work permit process and Legal immigration process of course and that would help, but this is still going to affect everyone struggling to make ends meet drastically in the future. Every celeb or person with a bit of fame loves to say more the merrier because they have made it in life and don't need to struggle now, but for people working right now living paycheck to paycheck without college degrees, this is going to make housing and job stability all the more challenging. And some of the biggest beneficiaries of this will be the souless corporations you showed in the video that benefit greatly from illegal immigration. I feel you are trying to be empathetic and that's great, but these numbers are in no way normal or sustainable. I say this as someone who works at an LA homeless shelter for $16 an hour, we have people there that have been hanging out and getting fucked up for years and literally do not care about working or learning anything about assimilating to society here. Almost everyday is a shit show with drunkenness and ambulances and police being called. I got the job to try and do good and it's made me feel hopeless. It's not bigoted to want a sensible amount of immigration and be able to vet and know who is coming here and why.

Laci

Incredible work. I am wondering.. is it too late to get a copy of the zine?

Anonymous

fire. ty for another fresh and concise perspective.

Vinnie Esposito

To piggy back off of this, we are bringing in unskilled laborers, ones who need technology (which requires electricity, mined lithium, grid allocation) to do basic tasks like talk to you. I've always been a LEGALIZE ALL DRUGS, free market economists, and have known that 1st gen Americans are some of the hardest working people statistically, are net positive GDP vs cost, but from my international economic classes at yours truly ASU, unskilled immigrants are a net negative to the taxpayers. The 800 lb gorilla is the woman saying "All Mexicans want to be in America" should be shocking. Why? Who would be in Mexico? Yes, America has exploited the resources of the global world for the past 70 years in full swing, but is the pendulum only going to swing back if the rest of the world exploits the southern border? Strong borders are important, it might be a silent invasion, and unbeknownst to the invaders, but to look at it in other ways would be disingenuous. With insane policies like not needing an ID to vote, I'm concerned that the progressive left is fueling the fire for an internal conflict of unforeseen proportions. It's a 4D chess game that nobody truly knows the players on either side, but nonetheless America is not in a healthy place for any of it's inhabitants. What are our solutions both nationally and globally? Is having a dictatorship truly that bad to create stability? Singapore is a "fine" model as to why it's best to keep a strong rule and order, and get shit done. Is there a way to create a Triple Bottom Line capitalist approach and privatize all aspects of government? Is the fiat money standard going to catch up to us and turn into a Bitcoin based global lawlessness? The pendulum of logic swings between the De-Industrialized Unabomber manifesto and Effective Accelerationism, none of which caters towards mass immigration being a net positive to Americans first and society at large second. At the end of the day, these are humans and to objectify them (which may be unethical), are resource dependent entities. If it isn't foreseen to have enough resources to carry them in a sustainable way i.e. food that doesn't contribute to gut/brain issues, leading to need for pharmaceuticals to be involved in every aspect of being, education that is more about STEM oriented initiatives to help the effective accelerationism movement rather than equity/equality that is usually bullshit pandering implanting insane ideas into kids head that gets them thinking their biology can be infinitely altered to whatever they wish with a pill and most importantly, the mind/body connection, as we are all vibrating energy hopefully trying for interplanetary reach that can help out with survival of a species that is so keen on trying to figure out what is this all about? While we may draw different conclusions, I appreciate you providing insight into a microcosm of Earth at a place and time that may have a direct impact on my future well being. Thank you.

Ray

Latin America Correspondents? Oh man. Shit is gonna get real AF.

Andrew Boryk

Learned more about what’s at the border from your 2 videos than I have from any media. Kind of crazy to think

ScottyRobot

Andrew, this is awesome. The only critique I have is that the subtitles aren't quite correct. Do you have a native speaker doing the translating? If so, they need to be a little more careful. There are a lot of errors, particularly in the ending interview with the mother. Really great reporting, the world needs this kind of content.

Orig Entertainment

Where did Andrew learn to speak Spanish so well?

Anonymous

My Mexican gf said if you drop Canal Cinco merch she's on that!!! She became a fan through me and this series has really hit home for her. We appreciate your work 🤘

Sweaty Palms

how bad are the errors? was there something crucial to the story or nah

Sweaty Palms

i empathize with ur statement but isnt there more empty homes in the US then there is homeless people? i feel like we probaly do have the resources and space to house every homless person and migrant coming in.

Sweaty Palms

love the way u put that last sentence. think about who is acting out of greed and who is acting out of surivival

Matt🆒

Finally, some real fucking journalism. Love you guys✌️

Chen

Mexico should be one of the wealthiest countries in the world from American drug use alone…. Makes you think what they’re doing with all that drug profit… definitely reinvesting it back into the community and the infrastructure of their own country…

Anonymous

I wonder how the guys from Senegal made it across? I'd be shocked if they made it in an inflatable dinghy. That in itself is a treacherous crossing if you hit bad weather system.

Yuri Sagastume

Americans should be super rich and have better infrastructure since we have so many drug users and billionaires but we don’t what happens to all that money?

Adam Guerin

Anyone else notice that the NYT dropped a story on African migrants to the southern US border a day after Andrew and his crew did? Try to stay relevant legacy journalists!

Laci

dang. I will be on the lookout if you ever do a reprint!

You say that as if the Mexican government is selling drugs and not cartels.

Cikito

Probably means it in a way that the person was trained for combat, and thus may end up joining some criminal organization instead. It's hard to say though because in places like that being part of the military is probably one of the few decent jobs you can get. It does not mean he's got a criminal mentality.

Anonymous

Ok cool. Thanks for your answer.. In Europe, a lot of the time they travel across the sea in Ribbs.

Amor

From what I've learned in school, I wouldn't say the immigration process has been easier or more grateful in the past than it is now. I'd say it's the other way around. But I'm saying this as a non-American, so sorry if I'm wrong

Anonymous

Everything you showed pretty much joins what Peter Santenello’s vlog on the border. Just the fact that both of you reach similar conclusions is just confirmation.

Amor

Also, they do this way of asking trivia questions about the country in other places too, for example Germany. I can understand that, because a country wants its citizens to know something about the place they live in. However it's unfair on the other hand that those applying for a citizenship have to know something about the country and those already born in the country don't have to

Anonymous

Yikes, you’re out of touch homie. As a person who has apparently paid 200K in taxes, you clearly live a different life than these folks - including a better life than one in their own country. Consider the perspectives in this video, ones where mothers are seeking asylum for their children from violent crime. Additionally, consider their views of America and what opportunities exist here for them and their family.

Anonymous

that is very true about the empty us homes, and that won't change any time soon unfortunatley unless we passed a law on personal investment homes/apartments. But there definitely is a housing shortage, and this will only make that worse. Along with corporations getting to pay lower wages.

Nathan Lucas

7:50 there’s a jump in the audio. Amazing content as always

Channing C.

Andrew is closing in on that Peabody. Incredible reporting. The fluent Spanish was a welcome surprise that made this story that much more immersive. HST would indeed be proud.

Anonymous

Very interesting. Love from Sweden!

BCL

even so-called "sanctuary cities" aren't being very welcoming anymore now that a strain is being put on resources and infrastructure at scale. our federal government might have screwed over a lot of countries in the past, but it's not our responsibility to harbor the world's downtrodden, nor take in people that aren't willing to assimilate to our society, culture and way of life. andrew, you talk about your grandparents coming over here to escape the famine. they went through extensive testing on Ellis island to the same standards we have currently in regards to applying for citizenship. and more importantly, they were happy to become americans and assimilate. they still identified and took pride in their irish roots, but ultimately learned our customs and integrated these into their value system. a lot of these refugees are not going to assimilate. they don't identify with western values. they don't believe in women's rights, gay rights, they don't identify with our moral code. you can look at Sweden for proof of this, a country that is now the capital of gangs and violence in Europe, and is now shifting its stance on immigration because of the unseen consequences associated with the policies that allowed for a mass influx of refugees. it does not always work, especially considering today's climate. hell, the Senegali being interviewed was literally a mercenary back home.

Bv

I love the video, the interviews and the effort you put into it! However, Andrew, I wish you would stay as an objective observer and would not put your personal opinion into it like on minute 6. I happen to mostly agree with your interpretations of the migrant crisis, but I would still prefer if you would abstain from voicing your interpretations of global politics….makes you feel more like regular news.. Hopefully you understand my concern

Lame Lade

Yeah, that undocumented illegal Senegalese trained soldier is definitely gonna get a security job lol.

Roma 2.0

I love how Andrew welcomed them in US :)

I guess I have a hard time reading between the lines. So american citizens must be trafficking the drugs into the country. The coyotes help people get across the border and then do they force some of them to sell drugs? It seemed like in the video they are forcing people to cross.

Andrew should do a Vivek VP interview ASAP

trythinking

getting too liberal woke leaning in these narratives man. The whole answer isn't "white man bad" because there is tons more youre not talking about here lol. But yeah all the dumb liberal people are just going to see white man bad and keep being stupid as hell.

Bv

I would be so happy if Andrew did like a separate podcast or show where he would share his personal opinion on all sorts of matters; after all Andrew has “seen shit” to say the least, I’m sure it would be insightful and I personally would listen to it every week. But I would prefer to watch reports like these raw, ie without interpretation, with minimized bias (you can’t fully have no bias of course, it’s impossible). Traditional media giants like cnn and Fox News are polar opposite to this approach, meaning they often would stub in their personal opinion (ie agenda) into any news story, which sucks. Just my opinion of course.

Anonymous

And many of them die when those inflatable rafts eventually sink from having 200 people onboard. Crazy sad situation, you really have to be desperate to endure such a journey

Anonymous

No he's right. Elites exploit Latin American resources to make a killing, destabilizing their countries in the process. When people flee the horrors that the West inflicts upon them, the elites manipulate the media to take all focus off of what they're fleeing, and put it onto the immediate question of what to do with asylum seekers. If you want to ban refugees from emigrating to America, ban American corporations from conducting business in these countries too. Watch how quickly things would resolve. Continuing global profit exploitation is a death urge. The American elite is staring down the barrel of their own shotgun, and they just can't help themselves from pulling the trigger. We're all going down with them, if we don't upturn this capitalist hegemony within a few decades.

Anonymous

@Bv, I'm commenting just to say that I agree with everything both Andrew and you have said. This might be the first time where I've fully agreed with someone's perspective, yet found myself wishing they would include less of it in their content. (At the same time, I agree with @Han: given that I agree with Andrew, I can't really label what he's saying as just "his perspective". "Opinion" and "perspective" aren't quite the right words for what we'd prefer to see less of - a better word escapes me. I guess I'm looking to see less of his analysis/synthesis of what's going on? Which when I put it like that, sounds awful - his analysis is spot-on. So now I'm unsure what I'd prefer, but I've typed up this much so I'll just hit the reply button 🙃)

Andy Gott

Hey, get that partisan talk outta here. This isn't a place for hate. Channel 5 is about the people, and for the people (in my view).

Andrew Ridgway

I mean, he's not really voicing anything that isn't wrong from how things are working in the world.

LaTe StAgE cApItAliSm reddit is leaking again. You do realize this is a term coined by Werner Sombart, an Economic Marxist (literally an oxymoron) at the time who later flipped to national socialism during Weimar? I'd bet the house that you don't even know what "Late Stage Capitalism" is in reference to, you just enjoy referencing reddit buzzwords to describe any sort of crony capitalism gone awry. Fucking tankies are the least informed people on the planet, grow up.

Will Hair

I honestly didn't know but appreciate the little lesson. Could have been a little less of a dick tho

BCL

Late stage capitalism implies that capitalism will soon fail, except capitalism is an intrinstic aspect of human nature and embodies the trading of goods and resources going back to the bartering system. We don't have capitalism, we have a mixed economy and a Keynesian monetary policy which is an abstract theoretical model with no basis in reality because the system fails without inflation in perpetuity. You want to find out what's wrong with America, look at how our financial and monetary system operate, learn about what our idea of money actually is. The solution isn't to abolish capitalism as so many communists advocate for, it's a problem of government spending and how our money supply works (it doesn't, on a long enough time frame).

Bv

The way asylum immigration works is crazy and non intuitive for us US citizens. Just recently my cousin claimed asylum at the US border. He escaped Russia when the war draft began (the Russian border security literally beat him when they found out he’s escaping, had to bribe them 2k usd). When he got to the US border, we had to go through some sketchy means to get him in. We ended up paying this “legit” organization that set up an appointment for him with BCP agents to surrender to. His court date was set for this summer, he got his work permit and ssn now, and of course he’ll show up in front of the judge. but still it was so weird to get him in with a legitimate asylum claim. US immigration is broken because if you want to fix it - u gotta spend taxpayer money and there’s a certain group of people in our country that really wouldn’t love that.

BCL

Globalizing manufacturing and trade (as we know it today) arguably began with Nixon's US-China relations and decisively fomented into policy via Bill Clinton. The term "globalists" gets thrown around a lot by Alex Jones types but the issue is unironic globalism. Outsourcing labor and policy to developing countries under the guise of helping them while intervening in their affairs and taking advantage of lax labor laws, toppling governments that don't approve of US influence (because we *are* the IMF/WTO). This isn't purely capitalism, this is a result of US policymaking and crony capitalism by veritable sharecroppers that we now know of as international corporate conglomerates. The world's elite and politicians caused this but I do think it's important to point out that this isn't purely the fault of capitalism, rather a phony system that buys out or topples competition while lobbying the government for red tape to pull the ladder up with them. That's not competition in its purest sense, we don't have capitalism, we have an oligopoly reenforced by lawmakers.

Anonymous

Is feudalism capitalism? Is slavery capitalism? Is tribal economics capitalism? In what way is private property an intrinsic aspect of human nature. Very bad faith to make that claim without any justification. Besides, co-ops disprove capitalist realism. There is no private owner of a co-op business, the workers elect higher positions democratically and are paid as a share of profits, thus worker control of the means of production. Is this subversion of human nature? And if so why doesn't it immediately collapse?

Anonymous

You're right that the system is more like an plutocracy than pure capitalism, but you get what I mean. I would say third world abuses are more the fault of colonialism than capitalism, although the two are closely intertwined. Fundamentally, I believe it's the fault of Christianity, or the church's perversion of it, which followed to it's logical conclusion results in Descartes' automata theory. The West applied and applies it not only to nature, but to humans living outside of civilization, which justifies in their minds literally any abuses of power.

Eammon Logan

I think the main difference between opposing reactions to this are based on how much empathy you feel. Another great story.

Leon

Please stay safe Andrew, cartels will not like what you publish…

Anonymous

What was with the shot of the EU flag with the words "imperial globalist agenda" voice over. Sounds pretty much identical to farage, alex jones, bannon, whatever. Never go full conspiracy loon. Please! The EU is a peace project between previously warring mass murdering nations intertwining them with equal rights and a common set of rules for citizens not a "globalist" agenda. Love channel 5 stuff but I hope you dont go qanon or start voting trump or something

Dasloops

Thanks for saying this. I agree very much. We all want a stable livable society, it’s why so many people want to come to the US. But at what levels does an inflow of people destabilize that, not to mention groups of people with vastly different cultures, values, skills, etc. There was a point in the video where Andrew seemed to imply that Texas invoking the word invasion was ridiculous, and I have to ask, at what point is an inflow of people considered an invasion? If I live in a town with a population of 200,000, and then in comes buses and buses of immigrants, when is it not ok? 10k new people, 50k, 500k? There is nuance here, go figure.

Dasloops

“With or without migrants, our tax dollars aren’t used for really anything good” Really? So the taxes we pay to keep our society going aren’t doing anything good? And those $3000 gift cards for new immigrants? Yeah America is the worst man…

Dasloops

At what point is an influx of people to an existing society considered an invasion?

Anonymous

Great job!! -AZ resident and this may be the closest to the truth as I’ve ever seen about the Arizona/Mexico border. Thank you!!!!

Anonymous

You're right that this isn't a place for hate. Channel 5 has always been about documenting people on the fringes of society in the most accurate way possible, while also examining how and why those people ended up on the fringes of society. That's exactly what Channel 5 did in this one too. Regardless of a person's political views or what they think should be done about the problem, the causes of the problem remain the same.

Anonymous

Honestly the fact that some comments here are calling Channel 5 "woke" and "liberal" and others are concerned about them going far right, probably means they nailed going right down the middle with the coverage. For what it's worth, while I agree with you that the EU has done a great job of being a force for good in many ways, I also think it's perfectly reasonable for Channel 5 and other sources to criticize the EU for the things they still get wrong. The EU is both one of the most impressive peace projects the world has ever seen, and it also economically exploits many poorer nations to maintain its wealth. The EU isn't perfect, and that's ok, and pointing out the ways in which its policies can and should be improved doesn't take away from the good things they do. Good things can only get better if people point out the remaining problems that need fixing.

Anonymous

I didnt say they were far right, I said quite specifically they made an Alex Jones' style comment "imperial globalist agenda" voiceover over the top of the EU flag, that specific piece of content. I very much like channel 5 and dont think they are far right, but that specific comment and wording is something you might find at a Qanon event (that andrew visited and reported on so well). "Globalist" in particular and really bizarrely showing the EU flag as a symbol of "globalism" is very out of whack for the quality and intelligence I associate with their output. Its what Alex jones or even european based extreme conspiracy theorists and extremists in general do and have done for 20-30 years.

Anonymous

Yes but having a voiceover saying "imperial globalist agenda" with a random bit of stock footage of the EU flag is not criticism or any kind of discussion, especially when youre talking about immigration in Arizona! Its Alex Jones stuff. Even the word "globalist" is a favourite of the fringe qanon etc. Just google Alex jones globalist. That wording and choice of stock footage is bizarre for this otherwise good video.

Anonymous

They are the opposition bromide, anybody that tries to scarf their beliefs down your throat and forces governments to do so saying that what they are saying is the undeniable truth is very “big brother” type.

No idea what you mean. Have a strong feeling this is about to derail the original point into some alex jones type stuff 😂

Great work as always Andrew, thanks for what you do.

Dasloops

Ok good point, but is being armed the only requirement for an influx of people to do harm to a society? Just for funsies, let's say you live on a desert island with 200 other people comfortably. One day, a boat arrives with 5 people. You welcome them onto your island, tell them the rules, and help them get situated. The next day another boat arrives, then another, and another, until boats are landing every day with between 5-10 people. It takes time for these new islanders to get situated, and some have few survival skills. At a certain point this puts a strain on the space and natural resources of your island. What do you do?

Private property is necessary and equity of outcome is not conducive to innovation and does not scale. It worked when humans were small tribes of tight-knit hunter-gatherers, in a modern developed world, it is inefficient at best, and at worst, this system implodes. Not to mention that hunter-gatherer tribes that lived communally still had hierarchies. This is observable even amongst "lower" life forms relatively comparable to us, e.g. chimpanzees. I do agree that co-ops at scale would be much better for QoL and would likely have better outcomes in terms of equality and efficiency, but I still believe private property is necessary, and more importantly, more people should have the means to own private property (aka entire neighborhoods shouldn't be owned by Blackrock or other investment funds, which is exactly what's happening). You might enjoy reading about the economic theory of distributism, check out the Wiki page. Incorporates the best aspects of free market and social economies in my humble opnion.

trythinking

well apparently the evil system of capitalism made the one country that everyone wants to come to, the USA. If the USA wasn't involved in these countries at all....they wouldn't be any kind of economic power house dude. Many of the countries existed before the US did and we dont see them doing anything special. You guys have to stop listening to this new anti-capitalism evil America narrative that is being pushed on you. You probably think people can magically change their gender by mental willpower as well. I really dont see why people with criticisms dont move somewhere else, do some reporting and get back to us in a few years and tell us if you like it more or less than what you have now. You get rid of capitalism and you get rid of competition, ingenuity, progress, etc. Elon Musk wouldn't be going to space in a communist society. Zero progress or opportunity in communism, that is why no one is trying to move to communist countries but for some reason come to the capitalist country because they know it is where they have the best chance to succeed. Blaming Christianity as well, which has done the world 100 times more good than bad, if you actually learn any history about it.

Some great footage and interesting information, but once again Andrew provides commentary that almost comes off as satire compared to what is being shown in the videos. Im very sure that most migrants would prefer todays version of walking a couple miles and sitting on a cold ground and then taken to a facility and given a phone and 3k and then later having to take a quiz on fun facts to getting citizenship vs what was going on in the mid 1800s trying to come here during a potato famine.

Learning history is what made me a leftist. The West (and Japan) were on equal economic footing with the rest of the world, until they began using new technologies, some imported from the east and some homegrown, to steal wealth from Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas. If colonialism had not occurred, India, for example, would never have become a poor country. If the West would give that wealth back to them and all the many others, and apologize for the actions of their ancestors, then we can begin to talk about equality of culture. As it stands, the West is quite obviously ethically inferior. Per capitalism, I quite honestly don't give a fuck about innovation. In so doing you are acting upon a zoocosis-esque death urge; your people will overpopulate, and then die en mass. You people worship your destruction like a god, probably because you've most all lost faith in that snake Yeshua. As long as you lose yourselves in such pointless garbage, you'll never feel content. That's half the reason why you all kill yourselves so much. What's the point in having big buildings, if all you want to do is throw yourselves off the side? You have intelligence but are the most vile, and least wise people on the Earth. Even your most respected philosophers are themselves consumed by anguish, because they've never caught glimpse of the heavenly natural wisdom that is their birthright. No philosophy from a Christian culture is of any value at all. Only when I fundamentally challenged the worldview indoctrinated upon me was I able to break free from the chains of depression and find meaning, and truth. The philosophies of the East gave me such a gift, I'm sure I would never have become as joyful and successful a person as I am had I not fully rejected the West, everything Western aside from aesthetics. I would probably still be suicidal, maybe dead. Instead I'm at the top of my class, and in love with life. What a blessing.

The African migrants in the US are generally wealthier than the ones that go to Europe.

Nicholas Leiber

I appreciate this content so much! Such an informative and first person account of what’s taking place at the Southern Border. I truly don’t think that you voiced your own opinion too much. I think regardless of political affiliation, any HUMAN can see there’s a serious problem here. On one hand, some of these people come from truly horrifying lives and deserve better. On the other, it’s absolutely insane that these people are just being allowed into the country. It’s baffling to me the only thing being done is closing down the highway! When is either party going to really try and implement a solution? A higher wall didn’t work, and Biden’s empty promises sure aren’t either.

Nicholas Leiber

Everyone salty about the globalist stuff. “…imperialist globalist agenda imposed by the corporate oligarchs who control our politicians” I think that’s a fair statement to make. Us average joes would love to be the rich and powerful, however, the rich and powerful do NOT want to become your average citizen. You’re naive if you think the rich and powerful don’t put effort into making sure they stay rich and powerful. They’ll develop algorithms that keep you scrolling until you scroll your entire life away.

It's because illegal immigrants are paying the cartel to help them to get across the border and the cartel is the main supplier of fentanyl to the US. Illegals are supplying them with money which in turn helps them run their drug trafficking business. Pretty obvious

Yeah the reason i started watching channel 5 was in part due to the lack of input on the part of the reporters. Im here for the people being interviewed, not to have their interviews twisted to portray an agenda, no matter how valid it is.

I recognize the impediment to innovation, but I'm just not too concerned by it. Quality of life should always be prioritized. I'd personally like to see somewhere between Scandinavian style and Chinese style socialism, but with mandatory co-operative management, though I'm not opposed to a hefty founders bonus. It's true that tribal communism doesn't scale, but it doesn't need to. Co-operative socialism does, though perhaps not to quite the same mega-conglomerate titan level that capitalist enterprise can. I don't think that's a bad thing, though. Eliminating those types of huge enterprises mitigates a lot of the issues you bring up, such as cartel extorsion of the housing sector. I'm familiar with distributism, and I find it intriguing; I share their harsh critiques of soviet socialism. (Since Soviet, Chinese, and Scandinavian socialisms do nothing to challenge the structures of power, but instead focus solely on government redistribution of wealth or nationalization of industries, I have a hard time even calling them socialism. Though they each did and do have their strengths.) I would only say that the lines between private property for all and worker ownership of the means of production utterly break down in the system the distributists describe. I see no reason not to call their system a socialism.

I can't blame Andrew for using the platform he's built, and the reach it has achieved, to address some of the most pressing societal issues that absolutely needs to be addressed. I understand where you're coming and I agree that the totally unbiased and free-of-any-judgement style of journalism much of Andrew's work is characterized by is invaluable, but criticizing him of raising awareness of issues that our nations' leaders have not only been neglecting but exaggerating for decades is, in my opinion, unsympathetic. We (us who've been born in a world of privilege and materialistic abundance) need to be confronted with how our way of living is negatively affecting so many people in this world despite - no, because of - how painful it is to witness so much that we demand political change. I wouldn't say that's having an agenda. I'd that's just being compassionate.

Alex, " I wouldn't say that's having an agenda. I'd that's just being compassionate. " But it is his opinion. I didnt subscribe to Channel 5 for his opinion. I subscribed for the interviews. It was precisely the lack of overarching narrative that I fell in love with, because thats so rare these days. If i wanted to hear the "right opinion" or what "needs to be said" theres a million media outlets I could go to for that. Or shit, I could just go to twitter and see what actual people are saying lol. Because thats what I subbed to Channel 5 for. What people are saying. Not what andrew is trying to tell.

Butt Mash

I actually agree with a lot of his takes on things. I just dont like the way recent videos have been set up. I dont want someone to agree with. I want the interviews of actual people so I can form my own opinion based on that.

Butt Mash

I remember there was a YouTube news channel i loved watching years ago, that covered the news in an unbiased way, until they sold it or something and it slowly became more biased. This always seems to happen eventually to every unbiased media outlet. Truly unbiased coverage is hard to find these days

The part of this no one is talking about is climate migration. Very short version is: U.N. has not declared climate change as a legitimate reason to be a refugee. Climate crisis causes less farmable crops to grow in equatorial regions (such as coffee, tea, other cash crops local farmers depend on.) Farming as well as climate destruction makes it hard for people to make a living in already financially stressed regions. Because of that, the cartels are able to put pressure on folks to turn to crime as for some folks it may be the only way to make a living. In these cases they aren't even making big money, just survival, but legitimate methods of making a living like farming are no longer viable as enough crops won't grow or droughts/disease/flooding can destroy months or even an entire year of profit. Many families that farm experience a large financial windfall during harvest season, which is no longer a guarantee. The US for over 100 years has systematically destabilized South and Central America both to fight Communism, as well as cement its role as the dominant financial power in the region. We have not done the same to Canada. This military and financial pressure the US puts on select countries in South America further contributes to local police forces and armies struggling to control cartel activity as we are both one of the largest global consumers of illegal drugs as well as one of the largest causes of destabilized South American governments. Many people are fleeing to the US from South America due to cartel violence yes, but not only is this violence exacerbated by climate change, it is the only reason that many migrants can state when seeking asylum because though the US is a global top 5 contributor to emissions and has some of the weakest policies regarding emissions reductions, they refuse to accept lack of food, water, and resources due to climate change as a legitimate reason for asylum. It's really not surprising this is happening. It is just natural cause and effect of everything we have done. On top of that, the amount of migrants that continue to enter the US on a regular basis will eventually become too much for border patrol to handle. The border will likely still be a conflict zone and deportations will likely continue, but it will most likely feel a lot looser and more out of control as we continue to cling to the old ways of governing from the 1900s. Also the immigration test is as much propaganda as it is an actual test. Most economists agree that immigration allows people with different skillsets and talents to move around as needed which helps businesses thrive. The goal of the immigration process among many things is to make sure that the people they are letting into the country prove themselves as being pro America, grateful and thankful that they are allowed to contribute to this great nation. However many people who are born here see the country as broken and want to criticize and change it. An actually valuable immigration test would be to look more into someone's ability to contribute economically. But once you go down that road you have to ask okay are we only letting in PhDs and Mbas? What about Bachelors, well wait can't anyone contribute? Okay well how do you contribute, well you need to be hireable, you need an education, connections in the industry, and there need to be jobs where you're moving. Okay well how do we connect any immigrant who looks like they can contribute with a job. And how do we provide job training. And how do we provide them with networking opportunities. And then you're like wait, why are we treating the immigrants better than the citizens? Why don't we get things like education, job placement, housing, healthcare, yadda yadda. So the sort of nationalist bent is a smokescreen as well as a power play to get people to stop talking about human rights and how big of a failure the current government is.

Anonymous

Just FYI by not blurring faces and altering voices and censoring locations of where they plan to move, you're giving ICE (which uses AI facial recognition tech and access to municipal cameras) the face, voice, name, and potential location of illegal immigrants.

Everything up to the last 3 paragraphs is from reporting from major news organizations like abc, NPR, NatGeo Vice, NBC and more. The UN High Comissioner for Refugees also talks about it https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2018/06/20/621782275/the-refugees-that-the-world-barely-pays-attention-to https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/environmental-refugee/ https://www.unhcr.org/us/news/stories/climate-change-and-displacement-myths-and-facts https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2018/06/20/621782275/the-refugees-that-the-world-barely-pays-attention-to It's also an agreed upon fact by economists that work for the US government as well as large financial organizations and major universities that higher levels of immigration generally track with higher levels of productivity and GDP in those countries. Immigration is generally a net win economically. It's really ignorant to call facts you don't like a load of shit. I'm not mad, I just want to point out to other readers that what I'm saying is unpopular. People don't like to hear it, but it's well documented and reported fact by major media outlets as well as a slew of PhDs in both climate science and political science. The last paragraph is my interpretation, having worked in politics in the US and talked to voters on the ground. Many are ignorant of the actual effect of the policies they vote for. They prefer to ignore most of it, until it makes them angry enough to make internet comments. No matter what side people are on they're convinced they're the good guy. When the reality is that both political parties milk this high level of ignorance to pass policies that have essentially really complex and boring outcomes that no one wants to pay attention to. It's much more headline grabbing to say "Communism is ruining america," than it is to talk about the complex global end economic ramifications of corporate greed and corruption. The paragraphs about economic migrants overwhelming borders also comes from news papers. 1.2 billion is the expected number by 2050. That's about 1/8th of the population. That said, the global south is way more densely populated than the north. Often 2 - 5x. So while it's 1/8th, to northern countries it may feel closer to 1/4th. And it's not my opinion that the borders won't be able to handle it. It's a majority of experts opinions. The US Army released a special report on climate change in 2018 that did not get any news coverage basically saying that almost every US owned military base was going to be under threat not from foreign forces but from extreme weather and that on top of that political unrest in almost every area was expected. It's fine if you don't like reading, or don't believe in science. Just... don't make that my problem. Cheers.

They won’t be able to survive in NYC due to the housing crisis and inflation. I work for a nonprofit in the city that helps house the mentally ill and homeless. It’s absolutely disgusting how they forced us to relocate and kick out these severely traumatized people to house the migrants. On top of that, the city cut our funding by over 30%. We barely have resources to take care of our most vulnerable New Yorkers, how do they expect NYC to take in the world? This isn’t fair.

Andrew, I like it better when you report the facts on the ground rather than when you make very large claims about the causes of such things. These issues are very complex and require analysis of matching complexity.

Chloe Moore

there is nothing "complex" about the USA's role in destabilizing other areas of the world for our gain. If you don't like this kind of journalism you don't have to support it. When we discover that WE are the problem, then maybe we can make a change so that future generations don't have to live in a world like this

Anonymous

Good luck fixing the problem without understanding it. I'm not disagreeing with what he's saying per se, only that when he just makes these claims in passing then it's lazy and misses all the important nuances that comes with actually grappling with the issue. I'm not going to stop supporting Andrew just because I disagree with his unfounded claims. Maybe others would do that, but not me.

Anonymous

I agree, I think there is a lot of value in listening to interviews without any kind of interpretation connected to it. Andrew does a fantastic job interviewing people, he asks the right questions, and will go to great lengths to get his interviews... That is what I'm here for, if I wanted to hear what someone thinks I'd watch the news on the TV.

Anonymous

Matias, he is doing exactly that on this patreon video. He's actually analyzing cause and effect of all the experiences he's had since he began his Channel 5 journey and tying them all together. Sounds like you'd rather he analyze the immigration crisis alone in a vacuum. which would be a disservice. Everything is connected. All actions have reactions. The U.S.'s deplorable foreign trade policy and destabilization of Latin America set the stage for fascists and gangs to gain power in the region. And the US economy absolutely requires illegal immigration so capitalists can exploit undocumented people worse than they can any American citizen.

cy

Agreed. Felt weird that he added his own take. Just isn't normal from him.

"Everything is connected" sounds like something the sort of people Andrew would interview back in the NGNB days would say.

Every country is the way it is because of the United States... pretty dumb take. Every society in the history of humanity since we were wandering tribes has greeted outsiders with skepticism, it isn't racism it is a natural response to the unknown.

eric

For instance, the age of consent in many South American countries is 14 or even younger, that understanding of what is legal might not go well with American culture so education could be helpful.

Anonymous

Not a dumb take at all, Eric. The actions of the United States have created and feed many of the unstable situations that people from other countries are fleeing from. Check your history and global politics, brother.

Anyone with the courage to embark on such a journey for a better life deserves to live here. We are a nation of immigrants living on land taken from its original peoples. At the very least, we as a nation, owe a debt to the people of the countries we have damaged throughout history.

Arijit Datta

Y'all are painting a very whitewashed picture of the issue, why would there ever be rule of law if anyone can just come in illegally and settle in the US. The reality is that people all the way up to the top profit from this.
