The third episode in conversation with George of CAVDEF discussing Henry Lee Lucas. In this episode, we begin to examine the narrative that Lucas's confessions were a "grand hoax". We explore the three overlapping investigations which reached that conclusion: the reporting of Dallas journalist Hugh Aynesworth, the grand jury run by Waco District Attorney Vic Feazell, and the state investigation by Texas Attorney General Jim Mattox.

By way of analyzing this "grand hoax" narrative, it's necessary to deconstruct who Lucas claimed to be. We discuss evidence which doesn't fit with the complete debunking of Lucas, including details from Mattox's own "Lucas Report" which supposedly destroys Lucas's many confessions. We delve into parallels with organized crime, and suspicious cases (one with a possible link to Michael Aquino) where Lucas might have (at minimum) taken the fall for real cult activity.

Finally, we discuss the efforts to get Lucas off of death row, culminating in Governor Bush's infamous request for a commutation of Henry Lee Lucas's death sentence.

• It was not 100% accurate for me to say the Dorothy Collins case began the Waco DA's probe of Lucas. 1985 news accounts state that it began in October 1984 with another Lucas confession (to Glen Parks' murder), and then intensified after the sheriff's office in November 1984 got Lucas's confession to the Collins murder. The way I laid it out on the show, however, does align with what the Waco DA claimed in the documentary. He told the filmmakers that the Rangers personally brought all three Lucas confessions to him at the same time. even though news accounts show they happened at separate times and were (at least in the Collins case) taken by Waco law enforcement, not the Rangers. This is the first, but not the last, time that the Waco DA's statements went unscrutinized in the documentary

• The Lucas article by Brad Shellady actually was in the later Russ Kick book that Jimmy mentions (Everything You Know Is Wrong: The Disinformation Guide to Secrets and Lies), not the one that I mentioned (You Are Being Lied To)
