Just from that super-extra rendition of the theme song on the opening credits, you can tell that for whatever reason, everyone wanted this one to be special. Longer than usual, way more stunt-heavy, and even bringing in an actor like Henry Cavil who could be a believable match for Ethan, even if he wasn't Geralt yet. And that led to its own complications, as the moustache you see here is indeed the very one that had to be covered by CGI in the original Justice League release. And even worse, it wasn't even necessary in the end as Cruise broke his ankle doing that rooftop jump, and Cavil easily could have grown it back during the delay that caused. Speaking of, that brief shot after he pulls himself onto the roof and is heavily limping is because he forced himself to finish the shot on the spot, since he understandably REALLY didn't want to have to do it again after recovering. And in what I imagine you'll be very happy about (since I'm writing this before actually watching anything), the series finally getting a regular creative voice in Christopher McQuarrie means that it can have more of an ongoing story, including bringing back significant female characters like you've always wanted. Though one person who probably really wasn't happy about it was Sean Harris, after he signed on to Rogue Nation with the promise of being killed off and not having to do any more, and now he's done two and is still alive and potentially coming back again. This was the third film in a row that became my new favorite of the series, before being topped by the next, and even if you don't watch that one here since I imagine you're really eager to move on by now, I hope you see it on your own because it's another huge blast.

Much though I can’t say I share the sentiment, I am happy, Jess, that you’re enjoying this series more than you anticipated. This one ends up ranked above the previous entry, roughly equal to the first in terms of enjoyment level. The third and fourth remain the best, or at least the ones I had the best times with. Again, this one felt like it’s in the fantasy genre. Start by addressing the frustratingly unaddressed Watsonian absence of Jeremy Renner’s character. Yeah, his Avengering prevented him from returning, hence his Doylist absence. Talking about the villainous heavy of the film. Henry Cavill was good as Walker. His mustache was fucking disappointing and goddamn underwhelming beyond belief. There’s the major complaint of it is so blatantly obvious he’s going to be a villain, which you picked up on fucking quick. The trailers as I recall didn’t even bother to hide it much. That’s about the only thing I remember from the adverts for this as a matter of fact. I don’t even remember what overly elaborate stunt scene they advertised that again proves Tom Cruise is completely certifiable. Christ, 2018 was a trying year. Then again, as you noted, the film itself doesn’t exactly treat the reveal as the most shocking thing in the world. Again, Henry gave a good performance, I just wasn’t overly nuts about the character, though a memorable death scene, loved your reaction to that. He felt a little shallow; not much depth to him, nor much focus as to why he fell to the Dark Side. Sure, the same was true for Davian, who remains the best villain in this series, but there it worked as Philip Seymour Hoffman portrayed him as a soulless monster of a villain; Chigurh meets Moriarty, the Napoleon of crime. And Philip was as good at it as he was, that’s why it was weird to me last movie when they tried so hard to make Lane the Moriarty. Although now in this film, he feels more like a Blofeld archetype, which I liked him better thinking of him along those lines. And in this film, he felt like what happens when Blofeld is removed as head of SPECTRE, which was quite interesting. Again, Sean Harris was quite good. He made me bust a gut at his line, “That was Ilsa. Very interesting.” nice to see you got a small laugh at that part. Luther and Benji remain highlights, I KNEW you would get SO protective of both gentlemen. Ving’s big emotional moment was good. Nice that Benji got to wear the masks, surreal as all hell though it was when it results in the cameo of Wolf Blitzer. Curious how that conversation went. I am happy for you that we FINALLY get recurring women in this goddamn franchise. Nice to see Ilsa again, somewhat rinse-and-repeat though her arc in this was. I was more invested in Michelle Monaghan returning as Julia, and that she got better closure. If we see her again, great, but I liked that we get more closure, more character development from her, and she and Luther WORKED in the end, which was great. And it seems Julia’s happy in her marriage. The husband seems nice, though I certainly hope he doesn’t keep going on about that plastic bag fucking blowing about in the goddamn wind. Shame that Max can’t join the recurring women as, judging from the dialogue at least, she is sadly dead. Her children were impressive though. Sad to see Huntley die. It boils the blood, the severe underuse of the magnificent Angela Bassett, which was a goddamn crime and a half. You kept apologizing for being such an asshole to Ethan with your Mystery Science Theater commentary. Jess, you were nice about it compared to me. I am so fucking done with Ethan at this point. He is beyond boring as shit, and at this point, even his psychotic stunts are getting prosaic. Then again, I did get stuck seeing the trailer for the next one this past summer, and they showcased his latest insanity, which set me off on a tangent. You’re right, there’s just zero suspense or worry with his character, the third film being the sole exception, which incidentally still feels like the only time in this series that Tom Cruise decided to not grandstand and decided to fucking act, reminding us he is in fact a pretty good actor, even if I don’t like him. A lack of worry which is made more prominent when, as you note, they’re not just going to blow everyone up in one fell swoop. Say they had, say the nukes go off, and the film ends with that imagery whilst the Vera Lynn song plays. That would have been all right. Again, though my enjoyment of this series is significantly lower than your own, I am happy you continue to have a fun time with this series, Jess. And it has resulted in another fun reaction, which I thank you for.

I will say that it seems like Sean Harris had a more enjoyable time on this one. Or at least given how Lane is out for blood and is even more unhinged, even if Sean still wasn’t the happiest about being in the franchise, he at least got to ham it up a bit more. His beard was mighty impressive. A lot more impressive than that mustache Henry Cavill couldn’t shave which was such a goddamn disappointment upon seeing it. I was expecting something a lot better. God, that cgi mouth was unsettling.

There's also the fact that Brandt was created to take over as the main character since Cruise was considering retiring from the series, and after he decided not to, they had a very very time figuring out what to do with him past his second appearance. There was a pretty amusing time between the two Thanos films when he hadn't been in Infinity War and we didn't yet know he'd be in Endgame (which filmed simultaneously), and the Mission Impossible crew actually made a public statement of basically "We would have appreciated a heads-up that he was available."
