This story had a very troubled production, mainly down to the director. Alan Bromley was a very old fashioned style of director, (He had only ever directed one story of ‘Doctor Who’ before this and that was ‘The Time Warrior’ back in 1973 and he was trouble even then), he would insist on shooting the story as live like in the 60s, didn’t work with effects and was rude to many of the female staff members stating that the only thing women were good at in television were costumes and the tea. This all culminated in a shouting match between Bromley and Tom Baker on set where, after they came back from their lunch break one day, Bromley was gone. It’s unclear if he was fired or if he left on his own, but whatever the reason, Graham Williams had to step in as director and finish the story. This experience was what eventually made up Williams’ mind to step down as producer at the end of the season.
