ASKING YOUR OPINIONS: ALSO, MILD STORYLINE SPOILERS AHEAD, WARNING IN ADVANCE We're considering stage-specific gameplay mechanics (think like in Megaman where you have reversed gravity in a specific stage that happens randomly) that would affect the overall gameplay mechanics somewhat, but would only be locked to that stage, and it'd have a thematic basis. So, while we've got a few ideas already, we wanted to ask you all if you had any neat, similar gameplay mechanics (gravity screwery, jump pads, speed boosts, whatever other things) that would match thematically to any of these areas below. Note though that we likely won't implement any stage specific stuff for the Fire level for the DEMO (but we would for the full game), as a lot of people playing the demo might not realize that it's a stage specific gameplay mechanic, and not something that'd be in every level. -Fire (a laboratory inside of a volcano where demons are held captive for human testing) -Ice (a biological testing and cryogenics laboratory where fantasy creatures are held, deep inside an ice cavern) -Electricity (a factory where sex toys and sex robots are made en masse) -Earth (a dense forest/swamp where chemicals from the Electricity area have created sentient life out of the plants, slimes, and other similar organisms) -The End (a small area, sterile and built from high technology, yet devoid of life... besides the shadowy apparitions, that is.) Let us know if you've got any ideas!

Maybe some vines you can swing from on the earth level perhaps? Oooh, and maybe not all the vines are what they seem. Subtly different vines that try to trap you themselves for fun times or stun you and throw you into dangerous situations elsewhere. That'd be pretty cool

"demons are held captive for human testing" :D Pretty sure that standart lave floors, electric traps and other stuff is enough for specific gameplay. But if you really want some that logical riddles, then you can implement "magic" riddles, like freeze lava, or melt ice walls.

For the Fire and Ice levels, either could work, there could be steam vents that work as launch platforms that would get you to higher areas, but would require you to plug other vents to divert pressure. For Ice there's also the "sliding floor" bit that requires you to drop an item on the ice so you can get in a door, a la Pokemon ice cave areas. For electricity there could be arena traps that you or enemies could activate that would turn on a small area electrified grid. Or maybe if there was a fence mesh like in the first castle in Super Mario World that you could climb, but would initially be electrified, so you would have to turn it off. Being shocked could also initiate an instant stun state that enemies could take advantage of. I'll have to agree with Jondude on the vine thing. Maybe some areas would require the use of vines to travel quickly over or you would have to traverse bog areas below that slow down movement for you (and maybe it could have bog monsters). And without knowing much about the End, maybe there could be sections where the lights go out, and since you say 'Shadowy Apparitions" you would get damaged or worse (better?) in complete darkness, unless you scurry under a lamp or something when the lights dim. Or there could be "Shadow Floors" where stepping on them would cause a shadow "goop" to build up until it immobilizes the character unless you use a fire spell or drop something burning on the floor.

These are all great ideas guys :D I'm gonna talk to the team about some of them! (If we do end up using anyone's ideas btw, we'll have you in a super special thanks section in the credits if you'd like, you can veto this if you want though)

I can totally see the steam vents PhatsM mentioned being in the fire level. Maybe even having to freeze them? Probably going too far out with that. Thematically, the only place where gravity screwery would fit would probably be The End. Maybe even having combinations of the stage-specific things from the previous levels?

FutureFragments

We're actually REALLY likely going to do the steam vents in the fire level, but not for the demo (as we'd rather not try to implement that before the demo comes out), so it'll likely be in the final game barring any sort of gameplay problem etc. The gravity stuff might work in the electricity level, I really like the "stealth gameplay" of the End idea (wanting to not get caught out, almost like a 2D MGS or something like that) but we'll see!

PhatsM

I think your gravity platform idea would work nicely in the end, at least what I assume The End would be. Flip a switch or rotate the level or what have you and you float up to the ceiling and bam, the ceiling is now the floor except the point of view didn't change so it looks like you're running upside down.

Do erotic themes count as potential edits?

Btw if you are searching for good and somewhat easy (to create :D) riddles I can recommend a GBA game named Golden Sun (Ice riddles, magic, logic, ...)

This one just came to me. What about blizzards or strong wind effects in the Ice level, which would slow the player and enemy characters? Perhaps the extent to which it would affect the character would be dependent on the characters attributes, such as strength (being slowed to no more than 66.667% of normal speed for weak characters/players, to not being affected at all once the player has reached a certain threshold in strength). Also perhaps extending this theme across different areas in the game, and in different ways. Items like endurance would affect resistance to heat, where the status effect would cause the player to take more damage as a result of exposure (or overexposure, thirst, exhaustion, etc.) to heat sources. Of course with electricity and having a body composed of 2/3 parts water, along with an neuro-electrical/musculature system, spells trouble for any being lacking conductive (meaning not acting as a resistor) or neutralizing (aka grounding) properties. This could be mitigated with armor or perhaps some kind of special ability (passive effect) granted by fucking the right creature at the right time. (I'm thinking some kind of water-based, electrical being capable of interfacing with Mage A, and inseminating her.) I suppose that's it for now. If it hasn't already been considered, I guess talk it over with your crew. I'll likely be back with other ideas for yous guys.

Stuff like level-wide effects we're likely going to do as ambient effects, but not as actually impacting gameplay, as the processor/engine drain that can cause sometimes is excessive (plus the ice level is in a cave underground :P) We won't have any status items in the game (as in, the character won't "level up" in any way besides gaining elemental abilities), due to not wanting to over-complicate the game for our first time out, etc. Same for any positive or negative status effects from interacting with any given enemy, etc.
