We're running a bit behind - we only recorded the 1938 Spinach Skrewtny today, but I can tell you all are a patient lot and know hearing our insights is always worth the wait. We really appreciate it!

So here's a completely unrelated Halloween horror... an HD transfer of a very rare title in my collection: Chuck Jones' Angel Puss. No restoration, and a nasty jump splice, but I'm well aware this is one of the few prints with any color circulating in private hands.

It's a shame that it's such a hateful cartoon, because as this transfer reveals the posing and color design is nothing short of excellent (when Jones was coming into his own as a filmmaker, but clearly this liberal artist was wholly uncomfortable with the cruel story he was stuck with). A fun fact: this cartoon was protested by the NAACP during its original release. The gist of Warner Bros. response was: "That was Leon Schlesinger's fault, who no longer makes these."

Hope to have some more tricks or treats for you this coming week, when the real horror begins...

One honour this cartoon does have is that that was the first to created the director with "direction" rather than "supervision". Anyone know the story behind this one? Why was Lou Lilly working with Chuck Jones? Was this an idea that Bob Clampett passed on?

WOW wotta print! Spooky stuff coming this week.....wonder what it is? Also, your bio still says you are "Bi-weekly", so maybe you wanna change that to "monthly" to adjust to your new schedule. Happy halloween, boys!

I’ve heard that Chuck Jones avoided discussing this one in later years whenever it was mentioned.
