For once Jon is actually sort of right. There is a magma cycle. It's very very very slow, but magma does cool down into rocks and then become other rocks and then melt down into magma and so on.

I liked learning about how the different rocks were formed in school. I now wasn't to see Jon react to the fish whose poo makes the particularly fine sand some beaches have. I swear I remember watching a nature documentary about that at school

Yep, I just looked it up. The white sands of Hawaii, made up from the excreted broken down bits of corals that fish eat. It could be worse. It could be a beach made up of dead animals. A bunch of tiny little skeletons just accumulating on a coast.
