Hello!

It's just about April, so let's get working on the Second March and/or April Patroncast.

Just in case you're new, the Patroncast submission thread is where you get to ask questions, suggest topics, or critique my sloppy miniature-dragon-painting technique.

So ask away, and I'll update this post when the Patroncast is recorded, so as long as there isn't an edit below saying that, everything should be good :)

EDIT - sorry folks, the Patroncast has now been recorded, and thus no further questions can be included.

All the best,

Jon

Hello Jon, Claire and Tabby. I've noticed more negative comments in the Empire series than there usually are in MATN videos, do you think that the complaints regarding the lack of challenge from the AI is the reason the series has had less views and worse retention than even some non-channel staple series', let alone other TW/Paradox series'? I think I'm right in saying that the drop-off from part 1 to 2 and then 2 to 3 (and lowest number of regular views 10 parts in) hasn't been so bad since The Last of Us 2.

Hello - sorry, this came in just after the Patroncast was recorded, so I'll answer down here. I'm definitely not seeing the same picture from Empire as you're describing - in fact, I'm literally opening this Patroncast talking about how strong Empire retention has been - it's maintained almost 100% of its viewership for the last 5 parts which is pretty much unprecedented, and based on everything I can see the end views will be comfortably similar to several other TW and Paradox series (Barbarian Invasion, CK2 Rome, 3K). Its later episodes have already overtaken the equivalent views in Dragon Age, Subnautica and KotoR. Based on every metric I can see, it's been a huge success, with the only downside being that it's not doing as well as Rome 1 and Medieval 2 did, but they've had the advantage of several years to slowly grow, and both benefited from strong YouTube organic ranking which Empire hasn't received as yet. And I'm not sure whether there's really any negative comments more than usual either - every episode in the series has a 99% like/dislike ratio. I'm afraid I'm just not seeing the evidence to support your position.

I guess I was basing it off the first episode drop off, retention over time as a percentage of viewers from part one. And the expectation that a channel staple would get higher numbers than Dragon Age or Subnautica. Though the 100% retention over the last 5 parts is great, of course we can't see like to dislike ratios now and I suspect that does significantly impact whether people actually engage with the dislike feature at all anymore. Perhaps it's just when I see negativity I'm then hyper focusing on everything and the cognitive bias starts to blow up every little thing out of proportion.

Retention is a tricky thing to read sometimes - I fully expect any series to drop about 50% of its viewers between part 1 and 2. The most successful series in the channel's history did that - Fallout 3 Kill Everything lost half. New Vegas Kill Everything lost over 60%. Skyrim only lost 40% and that's exceptionally good. It's just how series go. So Empire 1 into 2 was about normal. But most series keep losing viewers over time. Empire has proved wildly good at retaining people for the last 3 weeks. As a result, Dragon Age and KotoR have WAY more views at around their Part 4s, but now we're at Part 9 and Empire (despite only being out less than a week) has MORE views than Dragon Age and KotoR Part 9s. That's the strongest retention I can recall in the channel's history, and it looks like by later parts, it'll comfortably end up being in the top 10 most viewed non-Fallout series of all time. As for a few negative comments, meh, they happen - and Empire has attracted some irrational hate over the years. Plus, a few folks might be salty their pick in Democracy Week didn't win. Overall, all the data I can see has been great.

I love when Jon plays Total War Games. I think that's how I even found MATN, either that or fallout. Doesn't matter, the Empire series is amazing, regardless of Empire's known issues.
