Danny (Icarus)

Hi Cass, another great classic, just as good. If not better than the first one in my opinion ! 👍

Fredo betrayed himself at the "Superman" scene in Havana (around 1h 38m). Earlier, when Johnny Ola was introduced to him they both made it look like they never met before, but a few minutes later Fredo mentioned that Johnny Ola used to take him to that "Superman" show all the time. That is how Michael knew that Fredo is lying, and he was the one basically responsible for the attacks on Michael's family.

That was so fun. I think pt.2 is the best of the series, and one of the best movies of all time, but pt.3 is a very underrated movie in my opinion, I love pt.3. It came out MUCH later (early to mid 90’s I believe) but it is an excellent film and I think you should react to it if you did truly enjoy the first two. And I agree (although you didn’t say it explicitly) DeNiro’s part as Vito is the best part of this movie. EDIT: 3 came out in 1990, 16 years after part 2.

NationOf

The whole Vito not talking at a child doesn't have an enormous amount of meaning behind it, as far as I'm aware. The book notes that Vito was unusually quiet and reserved as a child, but doesn't suggest he never talked as a child. I think this is just his mother trying to make him sound as pathetic as possible to convince Don Ciccio that he poses no threat. In the scene where Frankie Pentangeli's brother is brought to the hearing, it was about reminding him of omerta, which is the sicilian code of silence. Helping authorities and informing on others was considered to be shameful in the culture of Sicily and the mafia at the time. He was too ashamed to give testimony about Michael and the Family in front of his brother.

Part 3 is good. but doesn't rise to the caliber as the first two. They are hard movies to live up to. If you do react to it, Their is a the new version of part 3. "The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone " It is a slight re-edit of the movie that Coppola did that fixes some of the problems. I haven't seen the new edit yet and would love to watch along with you. 😊

I always took Vito's mom saying he's dumb-witted and mute as simply a lie to help convince Don Ciccio to spare his life.

Negative

I don't think Vito was actually mute. Him starting to sing when he got to America kind of shows that. I think it just shows the type of person he is. He listens and watches and only speaks when he needs to. He lets others talk. And yes, Michael always knew it was Roth and not Frankie. When he was telling Frankie all of that he was being honest. Roth orchestrated the "hit" on Frankie with the "Michael Corleone says hello" line so Frankie would think Michael betrayed him. That's how the court hearings came to be. Frankie made a deal with the FBI against Michael because he thought he had been betrayed. Also at the end, Frankie took his own life after talking with Tom, because Tom assured him his family would be taken care of. The other part I really like is when young Vito took out Fannuci. That entire meeting with the money was Vito reading Fannuci. As soon as Fannuci took less money without much fuss, Vito realized he was actually weak and had no real power behind him. So it would be easy for him to kill him and take power.

If you do decide to watch the third installment, the new edit is the way to go. “The Godfather Coda” is how Coppola originally intended the trilogy to end. It’s a much better edit and connects far better to the original films. As has been mentioned by several reviewers, The Godfather 1 & 2 did not need a sequel. The “Coda” just feels like a continuation.

As far as the second movie is concerned, I have always felt the scene with Pacino and Keaton ( where she admits to the abortion) was the single greatest acting moment put on film. Pacino was just incredible, and I am so happy that you appreciated how he conveyed the building rage, and then ultimately exploded.

I remember when I first saw that scene. I teared up and thought “OMG Michael is going to kill her”. The acting and direction through that whole scene is just amazing, and it has high stakes. He needed a son, because his ego and legacy are so important to him.

"Godfather II" also holds the distinction of being the first sequel to win a Best Picture Oscar. "Return of the King" would also hold that distinction decades later. Coppola was nominated twice that year in the same category as a producer, for G2 and "The Conversation." His father Carmine won an Oscar for Best Score.

You should watch the Godfather 3. It might not be as good of a movie as the first two, but it's still an above-average movie. You'll probably find what you were looking for in the third movie, when it comes to the character of Micheal.

ArabianPrince

I vote for finishing The Godfather trilogy. By the way, will you be finishing The Matrix trilogy?
