Nice! Hope we see the sequels soon.

Oh awesome! Love you keep dropping the surprises! This movie is amazing. It got me into philosophy, which I am still fascinated with up to this day. I was gonna play some PlayStation, but can’t pass on a chance to vicariously enjoy The Matrix!

Sean Stuart

so when i said Elrond (the lead elf of Rivendell in LoTR) is agent Smith from the Matrix that meant nothing. But now it does. Saw this on Super Bowl Sunday at friends house in 2000. Outside of Star Wars was the coolest movie to this 15 year old kid.

Jay Kawala

It's been years since I've seen this - looking forward to having something to watch later today :)

Mister Lou

Zion is the name of the last human city. and Agent Smith is trying to find out where exactly it is, so that the sentinels can go and destroy it, and then people will stop exiting The Matrix.

The idea you’re talking about at the beginning of your outro is called “hard solipsism” it’s really interesting, and the most fascinating aspect of it is that we CANT know. Hard solipsism is the one thing you have to take for granted to understand anything. Interesting stuff, and this movie illustrates it beautifully. The movie is also an allegory for being trans. The brothers who directed it are actually now sisters. Fun as always Cass. Can’t wait for the next.

I'm at the point in the movie where Morpheus has said to Neo that he is "the one", and I can't help but think how this is a counterpoint to Cass' observation about Merry's bit of dialogue about wanting to be there for his friends in The Return of the King.

Jay Kawala

Simulacron-3 was a short story written in 1964 that was an early example of a story about digitally simulated 'realities'. There was another film released in 1999 called... well - maybe I shouldn't say, maybe Cass might react to it, and I'd hate to spoil it. Suffice it to say, Matrix was not a completely fresh idea, as exciting as it was to watch.

Great reaction Cass. Loads of fun again. Good job!!

Cass' question about similar movies has inspired me to look. Apparently there's a 1970's movie called "World on a Wire" that I had never heard of. This might turn out to be a bit of a Rabbit Hole for me. Anyone else heard of any others?

Do we live in a simulation? Here's the argument: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/do-we-live-in-a-simulation-chances-are-about-50-50/. It boils down to if we ever can build a simulation good enough to fool us. If we can what are the odds they'd build just one? With a ton of simulations running what are the odds you are in the only 'real' world? It's an interesting argument. Not sure I give it much credence. I don't know if we'll ever be able to program such a thing or if we'll ever have enough computing power to pull it off. That's the argument, though

I think - before you dive into the sequels, it's a good idea to check out The Animatrix. It's a collection of nine featurettes produced by various anime studios - short stories that explore deeper lore, like the history of the matrix and how it all happened, an origin story of a character showcased in the sequels, a prequel to the opening plot device in Reloaded, some philosophy of reality, etc. It's a really good segue between the original film and the rest of the trilogy.

As far as I know, it wouldn't be possible given our current understanding of physics. In order to simulate the universe you'd need more energy than the universe has to offer. Therefore, it is only possible if the true, non-simulated universe is very different from our simulated universe. That is possible, but nigh unknowable. Thus there isn't enough grounds to actually believe it, despite it remaining possible.

Hans Olav

As you pointed out, this movie is credited to "the Wachowski brothers", which are actually the Wachowski sisters, they came out as trans in the early 2000s, and the movie is about being trans, set to the backdrop of the simulation. The movie works great as a way to discover the idea of hard solipsism, but it is also given greater depth by realizing what the people who wrote it went through and what they were trying to say.

Derrick C. Shields

This is the first time I'm watching the Matrix since I was like,14 and since the Wachowskis came out and I'm excited if I'll notice anything in terms of metaphor. I know most of the obvious parallels by osmosis, but hoping I'll catch something myself.

Love the concept, I saw one of your reaction on youtube. I have to watch The Lord of the Rings next.

Lucifer Moon

If you watch the Matrix Films you really should watch the Animatrix as it does contain crucial lore.

Lucifer Moon

Hugo Weaving said one of the weirdest things about working on the matrix was the constant homo-erotic tension between him and reeves felt especially during their fight scenes. Both Actors are Non-Labeling Bisexual and the directors are both Trans so a lot of LGBT+ influence in this film. The primary artistic influence for this movie was Ghost in the Shell according to the directors. You really really should watch the Animatrix as it fills gaps in the film lore. "I would fall in love with a dead man, and the man I loved would be the one".

Has anyone else here seen Dark City? Would you recommend it?

Marty McGee

Just found your channel not too long ago. The Matrix is still one of my favorite movies. It is part of a trilogy, but it pretty much stands on its own too. I got to watch it when it first came out, and it was truly amazing effects-wise. The whole "bullet-time", rotating camera style was in it's infancy and was something never really seen before. The next 2 films really get pretty lore-heavy and philosophical. The 2nd wasn't bad in my opinion. In fact I highly enjoyed it. The 3rd goes off the rails a little bit, but it's still fun to watch. Great reactions and pretty close to how I remember feeling about it the first time I saw it.

Really enjoyed your reaction to this. One of my all time favorite movies. First time I saw it was in a theater when it was released and I was so blown away I went back to see it 6 more times, lol. So many memorable moments and the effects and action sequences were just so well done. The other two don't really measure up to the first but you may want to watch them anyway as the Matrix 4 is currently in production!
