Danny (Icarus)

Yes, one of my all time favorite movies, I read the books by JRR Tolkien back in my college days. Sean Bean (Ned Stark- GOT) is in it which is a plus also! Glad you're reacting to this, the trilogy is great ! 😊

yeeey but no timer?:) Can´t wait

Its ame mario

I usually tell people who havent read the books to watch extended since it goes into more detail about the world and helps you not get lost or confused. But it is alot

Ah, the granddaddy of them all, my one obsession before ASOIAF. Watching it again was pure bliss (it's been at least a decade or so). A few things: - the Uruk-hai (orcs-on-steroids, they're a cross-breed with goblins) took Pippin and Merry alive because Saruman explicitly told them so (keep the Halflings unscathed, kill the others). - just exactly what Sauron is, what form he has, and how he regains power is... sort of vague anyway. Essentially he is the personification of pure evil, except he doesn't always take physical form. He is something akin to a god, although of a second tier. Call him a 'fallen angel', if you will, giving you a Lucifer analogy. Obviously, gods are more like spirits that CAN take physical form if they need to, but don't always have to. But I do think you have to see him as a symbol of evil that always at some point return to the world. Even if it's defeated at times, it will always regain its strength and rear its ugly head. - I enjoyed your mistrust of Galadriel, She is one of the most powerful Elves left in this world, the bearer of one of the three rings that were given to the Elves as was told in the intro (and it's her narrating that part), and while she is on the good side in this story, she hasn't always been perfect in her (long past). Maybe somebody can correct me, but I think she is the oldest character in the story, not counting Sauron (my knowledge of the lore has certainly gone rusty). Very much looking forward seeing the other two films with you! You can skip The Hobbit (Bilbo's story) films, they are awful.

Great reaction, worked fine without a timer. I'm glad you watched the theatrical version, it's how most of us experienced the films the first time. The extended version is more for the fans, especially if you have read the books. If you haven't they only make the movie drag more, which you talked about at the end. Frodo's sword (the one that lighs up blue when orcs are near) and the mail that saved Frodo in the mines he got from Bilbo when they were in Rivendell. While Gimli was talking you pointed out we hadn't seen dwarfs yet... well, Gimli is a dwarf 😅

I love when the extended version references the lay of Beren and Lúthien, which has one of my favorite twists in all of literature. Thingol: "Do you have a Silmaril for me?" Beren: "Yes, I have it in my hand." Thingol: "Show it then." Beren: "Er, yes, about that hand..." :)

Anonymous

Kinda bummed you didn't go with the Extended Versions. You're going to miss so many amazing scenes and backstory.

Anonymous

The extended editions are for people who are enthusiastic about the source material to explore further what was adapted. It's like watching the director's cut on a DVD. The theatrical releases are what Jackson considers the definitive movies, and that's what gets you the authentic experience of the contemporary cinemagoers, of which I am one myself.

Anonymous

Yup great reaction but I just couldn't keep up cause you know, every now and then let us know where you're at, do you know how many times I had to start over because there's no timer or any indication to where you're at and right now I'm past half way but I had to start over cause I don't know which part I paused at so in the future please be aware...ok.

Anonymous

Also in the begining of the movie, you keep writing and looking away from the screen missing everything,. Do you know the saying pictures worth a thousand words , sometimes you have to watch to know not just listening.

Anonymous

As a rule of thumb always watch the extended edition. They are edited how the director originally wanted to present the movie. Unextended edition are studio restricted versions of movies.

Anonymous

Can't believe I paid for this.

Anonymous

Bit of advice since you're starting the trilogy, some of the best an greatest moments are done by picture not dialogues so you may think that you're looking away but you can still hear,.,. you could be missing a lot of important part of the movie.

Anonymous

One of the reason people like this trilogy is the scenery and the design and the music..so please, be aware.

Sean Stuart

my dad is going to New Zealand next fall if we can travel by then. So jealous! You can still see Bilbos house in the ground.

With the one ring, just think horcrux. Also did you see how heavy the ring was. It didn’t bounce off the floor of Bag End. It just land with a single thud. And also you see Frodo’s hand dips down when the ring is dropped into his hand by Gandalf.

Anonymous

I will literally DM you my Prime username and password so you can watch the next two films as Extended.

Anonymous

Thank you for making me watch it again! ;) About the critical acclaim: The trilogy was nominated for a total of 30 Academy Awards, winning 17 of them. “The Return of the king” alone won 11 Academy Awards, being the film with the most won Oscars of all time alongside Titanic! There is even a whole Wikipedia page listing all awards the trilogy was nominated for. It says: “In total, the series received 475 awards out of 800 nominations, thus making the films the most awarded film series in cinematic history” On the IMDb Chart the trilogy is ranked on 7, 10 and 14 of the all-time top movies… So yeah, there’s some critical acclaim, I guess :-D And I haven’t even started with the book/books yet… To understand all the Lore behind it, it takes several times watching the movies AND especially reading all of the books.

Omg watch the extended version...

Oouga

You mention Pippin and Merry and why they weren't killed right off. Someone already explained that, but let me add that they are Frodo's cousins, and cousin to each other. The familial connection makes it even more heartbreaking. Pippin, the dark-haired one that gets in so much trouble, is the equivalent of a Hobbit teenager, thus why he seems so young and almost goofy at times. He is the youngest maturity wise. Whereas the other three hobbits are related, Sam is not. he is Frodo's paid gardener and best friend. It's why he calls Frodo "Mister Frodo". He is a servant while the other three are considered gentle-hobbits (or hobbits with wealth). And don't let someone else turn you from watching The Hobbit trilogy. I, myself, loved them and I adore the book. I can accept the differences. You should watch and judge them for their own merit. However, you should find time to read (or listen to the audio books) of the originals to get the true information and experience.

Commented on Youtube too but - I loved your reaction! I think you caught a lot for a first watch and you tuned into the dialogue and emotions a ton! Hopefully you don't get overwhelmed by all the information coming your way by big fans, aha. There's a lot of lore and important info, that's for sure. Also don't worry about extended comments. Out of all the movies, I think the first one is fine not being extended - I'll admit the other two are nice to watch extended but the main reason I can see people saying is that 1) if you never watch these again, it's nice to have seen the extended, and 2) most long time fans don't have the theatrical, so it's more difficult to watch along with you on patreon. Thank you for watching these films :) My favourites and brought a smile to my face watching along here.

Andrew Roach

Just joined but will now probably cancel. Not because of a poor reaction but you NEED at minimum a counter running showing at what point we at in the movie and preferred a fogged out view of the movie as it is very easy to loose sync along the way. What if we want to pause halfway thru, no movie reference at all makes it hard to get back in sync with the movie and your reaction!

Ian

Cass posted this guess you missed it - ur weirdo friend cass OH NO! I forgot the timer!! Sorry guys!!!

PickettsChargingPort

Wow. I haven't watched this version of the movie since it first came out on DVD twenty years ago. It is FAR inferior to the extended edition. Half the film is missing! Watch the extended edition in private and then the the extended edition of the next two film as a reaction.

Anonymous

Nice reaction and can't wait for the other two. Don't mind the "You should've watched the Extended Editions" comments or the complaints of not having a timer. Yeah you miss some extra things but as a first time watcher it's still good. Just some things to help you understand the story better. 1. The Uruk-hai took Merry and Pippin because Sauruman told them to bring the halflings(Hobbits) back because he knows one of them has the ring. 2.Sauron isn't a physical form but more like a ghost in the dark tower of Barad-dûr, the tower with the great eye of Sauron on top. 3.I don't think it says how long Islidur had the ring but, yes any other race that would have held it for a long amount of time like Gollum. They would have eventually turned into something like Gollum. Bilbo would have eventually turned like Gollum, from being corrupted by the ring. If he had it a little bit longer. But Sauron no, he made it and it would have not affected him at all just help in taking over Middle-Earth.

Hey Cass. I hate to be yet another commenter going on about the extended editions of the movies, but I would highly recommend watching the extended edition for at least the Return of the King, the last movie in the trilogy. I don't want to post spoilers, but I'll just say that there is a major character whose story arc you won't see completed unless you watch the extended edition of that film. The Two Tower extended is also good for some cool character development moments, particularly a nice flashback scene of Boromir, but if you don't care about any of that you can skip it. All that said, as much as I love the extended versions and as much as I highly recommend them, you can still experience the greatness of these films by watching the theatrical cuts. I'm enjoying your reaction regardless. :)

Anonymous

Yeah honestly your reactions are great to watch with Cass! But yeah i also recommend the extended versions as they are the "real" versions, opposed to what the theatrical versions are.

Anonymous

Great reaction!!!

Balkyne

Ok so this is going to be a weird comment but I've not at all been able to follow along to this. As this is the theatrical not extended version, and all the versions I own on blu-ray are extended, I needed to bust out my original DVD copy. It seemed fine at first, but about 27 mins in I noticed we'd drifted a few minutes out. I'd got to Gandalf reading about the ring and you had just started to see the dark tower and Gollum screaming Bilbo's name. I'm very confused. I don't know if there's been numerous edits made to the theatrical versions of the film since the DVD days, but it disappoints me that I won't be able to watch along, as we don't have HULU in the UK :(

Balkyne

Does anybody know why that might be the case? and where I might find a version that will sync up?

Anonymous

It might be because the frame speed is different on the dvd version and hulu version. This is actually not an uncommon problem, she watch b99 on hulu and I on netflix and my version is faster than hers with maybe 10 seconds. In norway we have lotr on netflix, but I don't know about uk. You should also be able to rent it on youtube.

Balkyne

Watched this all the way through. Loved the genuine reaction and now I cannot wait to see you do the Two Towers in January. The opening will shock you :)

Anonymous

I really enjoyed watching this with your perspective. It was refreshing and I cannot wait for you to watch the other ones.

Jay Kawala

I shouldn't try to type in the dark. lol. I wanted to share a thought about Bilbo and his corruption at the hands of the ring as compared to Gollum: #1 I think Hobbits are unusually resilient (maybe because they are so humble and easy going by nature - and thus unlikely to tempted). #2 I think Bilbo rarely used the ring, whereas given where Gollum lived (as shown in The Hobbit) Gollum used the ring nearly every day and suffered more as a consequence?

Anonymous

It would be nice to see which scenes you reached just like the way that you did for YouTube because I am unaware of which scenes you are reacting to on this Vimeo version of the reaction, just a piece of advice for your next live reaction to The Two Towers :)

Balkyne

Well, the idea is your meant to watch the film along with her. You end up with huge copyright issues otherwise. ~The idea was to add a timer at the bottom tho so that will help if she remembers it lol

Anonymous

Ah ok makes sense, maybe discord would be a better option but I don’t know how will she do the live reaction for the next two movies. Next time, I will consider watching it with the reaction.

Anonymous

Poor Sean Bean, killed off in the beginning of two of the greatest franchises of all time. Great reaction! And I personally like you’re doing the Hulu versions, easier for me at least, plus having the extended versions to watch in the future gives you a great reason to watch them again! This was actually the first DVD I ever bought, all VHS’s before this. PS: I was happy to see you used the blanket I sent you! Excited for Two Towers (my favorite of the three)

Koala Banana

the solution is simply to pause whichever one gets ahead every once in a while to re-sync

Morning Featherheart

I stumbled on your Fellowship montage on YouTube and just had to come see the whole vid. I'd been meaning to rewatch these. It's been years and years. Back when they were first coming out and their Extendeds, I must've watched these films more times than any in my life. The theatrical version is great in its own right, I was addicted to them on DVD even before the extended versions. I am so stoked to join you in watching The Two Towers (part 2). Fellowship is great, but I feel like Towers is a tier higher. So many moments I look forward to seeing your reaction. Unrelated, are you Irish? Critical Acclaim? If I recall correctly, I think this one earned four Oscars. Towers got 6 I believe, and King 12, tie-ing it with others for the record.

Anonymous

Are you going to be reacting to the next two movies???

Anonymous

i just hope you read this, i ran upon your reactions on YT after having rewatched the LOTR trilogy recently ..at first i was like, no way, why would i watch someone's reaction to a movie i already seen..and so it began..i purchased your highest patreon rank just to watch the lord of the rings trilogy with you and it's truly worthy..plus i love the B99 too so no loss there

Anonymous

is it also allowed to love you? because i'm thinking i fell in one of those

BNJ

I'm pretty sure Jackson considers the Extended Editions the definitive versions, that's why they're called the Directors Cut

Clara V.

Whoever told you to not watch the extended cut should be punished severely. Very disappointing.

Robjgood

The theatrical releases are amazing! They are the ones that won all the awards and that people fell in love with, plus Peter Jackson was also more than satisfied with them. There is a reason the extended versions aren't called the directors cut.

Anonymous

uh, where's the timer?
