They were just together for so long they thought they should get married because it’s just what you do, for them it was the next logical step so that’s what they did. They obviously did love each other, it’s not like they didn’t otherwise they wouldn’t have been together for so long. They were going through the motions. I’m pretty sure once he met Lisa is when he realized he and Serena really weren’t ment for each other and that what he had with her was toxic. Like he didn’t realize he wasn’t truly in love with Serena like he thought he was but met Lisa and realized it then. Deep down she knew it too which is why she was saying he was right. They both thought they were in love.

It's SO subtle but I love the friendship between Jim and Andrea. Their little silly dance at the wedding was so cute. Melinda's had some bad heartbreaks over the years (first the friend who humiliated her in college and then her serious ex who couldn't be open enough to believe her). I'm glad she's got amazing people like Jim and Andrea in her life now.
