reid may be more bookish but he's still an agent just like the rest of the team, and has still has undergone all the training the rest of them have. he's not like let's say garcia who is the technical anylist who sits a desk job. he's a field agent and has been trained in how to handle emergency situations such as this. he isn't doing to "impress jj" he's doing it because it's his job. he's an equal member of the team and has had to undergo the same training to be so. i don't see how him doing his job equates to him just trying to impress jj. tbh, i'm not really thrilled on the idea that someone stepping up to take action and be protective and do their job must only doing so to impress a girl. reid is definitely way more than that and i'll always defend his character in that regard lol
