Some hae meat, and canna eat,

And some wad eat that want it:

But we hae meat, and we can eat -

And sae the Lord be thankit.

O Thou who kindly dost provide For every

creature's want!

We bless Thee, God of Nature wide,

For all thy goodness lent.

And, if it please Thee, heavenly Guide,

May never worse be sent;

But, whether granted or denied,

Lord bless us with content.

Thank you for the written translation, Stephanie. I can usually pick up all (most) of Gerry's lively Scottish accent if I really focus, but sometimes a little help is welcome.

Enjoyed it Gerry! My people left over 300 years ago during the clearances, but we still consider ourselves to be Scots. From a member of Clan Donnachaidh in Alabama, Happy Burns Night! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Thank you Gerald, that was wonderful.

Lovely recital. I grew up with this poem. My parents are Scottish and my Dad gave me a great appreciation of Rabbie Burn’s poems. We have a statue of the poet out side our state library in South Australia. Like Gerald He has warmed many hearts around the world 🦄🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Love the Burns blessing! I had a friend years ago who would recite it before dinner - although she was American, she spent some years in Scotland and had a great accent!

Happy Burns’ night Gerry and all! My mother was ‘frae the land o’ the heather and the tartan sae braw’ and I have many Robbie Burns mementoes from my grandmother and family in Scotland. I have just browsed through a tartan material covered book of Robbie Burns Poetry and songs and came across a song we sang at school here in NZ! - Ye banks and braes o’ bonnie Doon....etc etc. I still have an unopened, tiny souvenir pictured bottle of Robbie Burns Cottage in Alloway containing Scotch Whiskey. (No one would be brave enough to drink it after more than seventy years I’m sure!) I love my Scottish heritage and a few sayings have passed down the family such as ‘foo the noo’, although it confused my mother’s carers in her last days when she was trying to say she was ‘full the now’. 😅 Burns blessing Gerry and may you all have a wonderful dinner. 🙏🏻🥰🇳🇿

My Scottish Mom from Pollockshields, Glasgow recited the Robert Burns poem "To A Mouse" to me when I was wee girl. My favorite! Slange Var!

Thanks Gerry and Stephanie for the reminder about Robbie Burns night. I just realized listening to the haggis address that my father used the first few lines as a grace before our meals. Thanks for the memory! I am so happy for you all to finally be together again. I am really looking forward to Isabelle and Percy being back at the chateau. Who is a better gardener or funnier than Mummy??? 💕🇨🇦

Slàinte Mhath!! 😊

Anonymous

Steph.......thanks for this extra Patron communication. Your "brother" looks dashing in his dress clothes. So glad Gerry and Mummy got over their health scares these past 12 months. BTW..... so refreshing your Chateau is not all about little kids, but about "adult kids" lolol Have fun with Michael Potts and Ruth. I am jealous,

💚🥳🙏I’d never heard of this Happy Burns Night all… love the green plaid/ tartan… Hey’ here’s a Question what’s the difference between a plaid& a tartan? I love the green by the way

Anonymous

💚😊🙏

Anonymous

Lol. I'm celebrating Burns Night with my Donegal man (no joke!).

Anonymous

Kimberly Dale I believe a plaid is a pattern made up by people who make fabric but a tartan is a special pattern that each clan lays claim as their own. I am not Scottish person but I live in a province of Canada named after Scotland, in English New Scotland, in Latin Nova Scotia.

Happy Burns night !!! God bless 🥰🥰🥰

‘Auld Ayr, wham ne’er a toon surpasses for honest men and bonny lasses’ I’m an Ayrshire lass currently in Florida! Happy Burns night 🥃

My Scottish father used to say the first 4 lines of this poem all the time - fun to see the rest of it !

Anonymous

Wonderful! My husband's a descendant of the Fraser clan, through his paternal grandmother, so we also always celebrate Burns Night in our house. My husband makes (vegetarian) haggis and neeps and tatties, and he ALWAYS dresses in one of his kilts (he has 5, including a full dress kilt we commissioned during a trip to Scotland many years ago). We live in the US, and he's a college instructor, and his students are always amused at his kilts and tartan! He also ALWAYS wears a tartan tie on the first day of the quarter/semester, so his students get used to a lot of tartan. Another reason why I'm extremely fond of Gerry's tartan wonderland! :)

Anonymous

Indeed lovely poem and they way you recite it. God Bless and much love from Israel...

AMEM 🙏🏼 ❤️ xx

So wonderful Gerald, it brought back fond memories of my last overseas holiday, 2018 to Scotland. Still can’t wait to go back.

Anonymous

I'll always remember my first official 'Burn's night' where my best friend read this poem and then skewered the haggis and it exploded and we all got more than we bargained for ! We used to love telling tourists how to hunt the haggis, it's a wee hairless beastie that runs through the heather, hence it's baldness and it has one leg shorter than the other so you chase it around the mountain one way until it reaches the top and falls down so then you catch it ! Some actually believed it! Haggis really has to be made by a butcher who knows what he is doing it as if you taste a bad haggis as your first then you won't go back down that road ! xoxoxo

Anonymous

Thank you Gerald , I need to turn subtitles on when you're on stage!

Love this! Thanks Gerry, I loved the Donegal poem as that is where my Dad is from. That was a good bit of Craig’s

Lord bless us with content indeed!

My grandpa moved to the US from Scotland in the late 1930's. So my family always celebrated Burns night. I haven't been feeling well (I had Covid last week) and so we just had some meat pies with tatties and a trifle on the side.

Anonymous

Gerald. ❤️❤️❤️

I realized recently that I am so taken with LaLande and the adventures as it is so far removed from my little Canadian existence. I have a good life and am so thankful for the people I have and the things I have but we are a very boring lot!! LOL Thank you so much for being so very different than my lot. :) As always thank you also for all that you share with us!

Anonymous

I hope your Burn’s Night celebrations were splendiferous! Although SA might be sparse on haggis I’m sure they managed to rustle up some whisky for you. Your are both looking gorgeous - beautifully dressed for the occasion xx

Isn't it something amazing that globally, we all said the same prayer? Our Burns Night was in the exact cottage replica of Robert Burns childhood home. Being there gave a tremendous appreciation for what earlier peoples endured as their normal home environment. Glad I brought a big, thick coat! Sleinte!
