Illustration #38 (Patreon)
Content
I tried to keep the color palette fairly limited in this one, and I think it worked out pretty well! Sometimes I do go a bit overboard with different colors, without considering carefully enough if they create a nice complementary contrast or color triad or something like that, and I just do what feels nice. I guess a lot of art is about making what feels nice, but it's also a good idea to back up your choices with solid reasons for why it works beyond just "it feels like it's good". This picture, for example, has a warm-cold contrast created by the orange and teal colors. I tried to keep the other colors in the picture muted enough that they don't interfere with that in a significant way.
If you remember the sketch for this one, you might remember that there was no background. The idea was to just have sort of a misty background without anything there, and keep the focus entirely on the characters. But when I was approaching the end of the illustration, it felt a bit too empty, so I decided I'd add a background after all. I don't really recommend waiting that long before you add a background in an illustration. It's a good habit to plan everything as early as you can. Especially big things like that should be there in the sketch. But it turned out alright! Ironically, the background is kind of what I like best in this illustration. Possibly because I painted it pretty quickly and didn't have time to get tired of it. :)

Oh, and the next thumbnail sketch poll should be ready pretty soon, so keep an eye out for that!
