The framerate and vaseline filter of the remaster may be a bit rough, but I'm still really enjoying the game and using a full walkthrough to ensure I nab all the characters I can. I've currently picked up Leena, Poshul, Mojo, Guile, Kid, and Serge. Who is everyone else running with?

As this is one of my all time favorite games, I was ecstatic to hear of this remaster and this deepest dive! And now, playing the game for the first time in roughly 20 years, I'm glad to say that it still holds up! It's not just nostalgia keeping it afloat as my favorite. A few thoughts… Being able to run away from just about any fight without the fear of "failing" to run away is amazing. I think you can run away from boss battles as well. In Fossil Valley near where you can pick up Skelly's Heavy Skull, there is an enemy named Drongo. It's a rather simply designed enemy; a yellow, cactus-like thing with a freakish "tongue". Gave me nightmares as a kid and still does to this day. Maybe it was just all the talk of ghostly, supernatural things form the Dragoons that primed me to hate it. With so many characters to "collect" and with them being easily too missable, I've had to resort to looking at FAQS to make sure I don’t screw it up. Needless to say, I've already missed a LOT of them. Who are your favorite characters so far? The theme of alternate dimensions and the whole "what if I'd have done this instead of that" are prominent, but I don’t remember the game so blatantly hitting you over the head with it constantly. I suppose when the game originally released in 2000 these types of themes weren't as common in media? The music is phenomenal. I've been listening to it for years outside of the game. Another World's overworld theme has helped me fall asleep many times. And yes, that is a compliment. The "slice" sound from Serge's weapon as you attack is oddly satisfying. I love how much personality the town of Termina has. From the flowers hung everywhere to show their pride to all the merchants vying for your time, it's great. And that music! Korcha really needs to wear some pants. That conversation between Leena and Serge on the beach about their promise definitely conjured up thoughts of Tifa and Cloud. And that Prophet guy in the library of Viper Manor (where you fight Marcy) definitely gave me Bugenhagen vibes. I love how quickly some of the recruitable characters give up their lives to help you out just because you look like you're doing something important. And also how easily they accept the reality of alternate dimensions. Good for them for being so open minded I suppose! Mojo! Sorry Ben, I know there's a lot to read here but I sadly didn't see that many comments for this one.

David Dillinger (yojimbodjd)

I don’t know why but I just love Nikki’s animations. Everything is music related from his guard and toe tapping to the way he walks as his hand strums an air guitar.

Can we get a standing ovation for this soundtrack? Yasunori Mitsuda hit home run with these compositions.

I'm surprised it seems like every character has their own unique animations for their special moves, given just how many of them there are. Maybe as I get more party members some of them will seem like knock-offs, but so far they've been pretty unique. The first time I had Guile use his special (which is kind of grim if you think about it; he makes his Wand disappear and then reappear and expand inside of someone??) it really impressed me.

Oh, I did not immediately realize this is the post we should comment on. I never played a game from this series before, so I decided to catch up on CT and play CC at the same time. Even though this might sound a bit stressful, it has been a blast so far! Still not completely finished with CT, but the beginning section of CC was pretty interessting even without the full context. #music I started my Chrono Cross playthrough on a sunny morning. I turned on my switch, put on headphones and launched the game. The menu music was rising very slowly and I decided to give it a full listen, while I was preparing a cup of coffee. It played the rearranged version of the track "Fossil Valley" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrHn2IBre5c). It starts as a crackling and atmospheric ambient piece and transforms into a beatiful and somber melodic piece that hit me in the feels before the frickin game even started. What a perfect start! I was stunned and eager to find out what else this game had to offer, so I jumped right into it and played for a few hours. Totally forgot my cup of coffee... #looks Personally I am not a fan of the "new graphic style" option, I feel like the character models blend in with the environments a bit better on the "classic" option. I am plying on switch in handheld mode and the smaller screen really helps to bring all the elements together. The art style of the game is beautiful and really transported me into the world. Loved the throwback to the scene in CT, when your mom opens the curtains and lets the sun into your bedroom! The animations in battle are quite elaborate and pretty varied so far, Guile's (brutal) "WandaIn" is my favourite so far. There is no excuse for the horrendous framerate though! #battle system The battle system definitely feels unique. I am not sure, if I'm a fan of the fact that every party member seems to be able to learn every element. On one hand the flexibility is welcome in a game with so many potential party members, on the other hand I feel like it hurts the character building a bit if there are no clear roles for them. It feels a bit more challenging than CT - I had to run from those three bird persons, at the entrance to Viper Manor. (very cool, that you CAN run from bosses in this game!)

Pretty much the same team as you, but I missed Leena and Mojo. Guile replaced Poshul so quickly in my team. Just could not vibe with that doggo.

Hello old PS1 JRPG trope. Lets hunt items in the environment that is not clearly marked or even there at all.

ha ha - i literally wrote down in my notes that the prophet had bugenhagen vibes as well!

I decided to play two saves of this game since there's an option to not recruit Kid, but we'll see if I can keep that up, may end up sticking with one of them. Anyway he's the little details I noticed as I played this first section: There's a lot of little nods to chrono trigger in this opening section - 'wake up sleepy head' then the opening of the curtains, like the opening of CT - Serge's mom 'Marge' (pretty hilariously named) is a regular NPC model and his dad is not mentioned at all - the bridge over to the Prophet's tower (where you fight Marcy) is somewhat similar to the dungeon bridge where you fight the dragon tank in CT - the drop into the dungeon cell is similar as well, depending on whether you have Kid in your party or not, you either fight your way out or you bang on the cell doors until Kid comes and releases you - The make multiple references to Heckran (boss from CT that you have to fight before jumping into the whirlpool back to the main continent) in the game. You need one's bone to recruit Poushul, and I noticed one when the viper churro vendor said the recipe called for one. Probably others just the two I found. Other little things - - the Tech items kinda look like toriyama designs from DBZ - Nikki sings 'sweet sister of mine' - that's a GnR reference right? - Oh man, the accents Overall, I'm enjoying my time with the game, managed to recruit all the characters back when it originally came out, but I've honestly forgotten most of this game after all this time.

I noticed that Leena's hair and eye color match Marle's, and her name is very close to Marle's grandmother. I'm not trying to say they're blood related, but that maybe they're trying to show an alternate timeline of that family line. She is one of the first characters you interact with in a big way and who you can convince to join your party and is also innate Blue like Marle. I'm just saying there are too many connections for it to be a coincidence.

The Dungeon Design in Viper Manor is absolutely fantastic. Making the solution to a puzzle a trap was amazing! Making, not necessarily a chest (which there were those Boxers laying around) but a random vase in the environment lay in wait to ensnare the player who runs around spamming the interact button, and it turned out to be a kinda tough fight and everything! There was a djinn in it! But also the traps and just general gotchas for doing certain tropet things from '90's JRPGs.

My brain, miraculously, clicked right back in on the elemental field system. I love it. I love seeing what elements they have for each location. In the Viper Manor courtyard at night, the color scheme looks like a lit match. Also I have yet to find a truly tough fight, and that includes the "charge right in" fight I did to get in Viper Manor. Once Ketchop takes care of Solt and Peppor for you, he himself isn't that hard. And if one of you goes down too early, Solt revives you and Peppor chews him out. The whole fight is a true treat... though I'm very suspicious as to how they break through the front gate and say "Well, I guess we better wait for night time now." They just broke in? How are they hiding? Finally, in closing... what was everyone's record for feeding dragons? I got to about 37 one time and decided "I'm good."

Hi there! Kyle recently said on the main podcast that hasn't gotten into Chrono Cross cuz he just sits on the title screen, listening to the gorgeous opening music instead of playing the game. Big mistake. The pro gamer move is to get to Another World, an hour in, and then just listen to *that* music instead of playing the game. Truly, is "Dream of the Shore Near Another World" the prettiest piece in all of gaming? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVNkROZ0k2Y *** Replaying my favorite RPG two decades later, I have to admit the combat system is only slightly less rote than that of its contemporaries. But the division of regular attacks into weak, strong and fierce does a great job of disguising the roteness. Sure, you're largely hitting A like in other turn-based games -- with occasional deviations, like going straight to the fierce attack to finish off a squawking Dodo before it pummels Poshul -- but the veneer of choosing among hit percentages, and how much stamina to spend, affords basic attacks a patina of strategizing missing in most turn-based RPGs.  *** Serge's epitaph hits hard. "Nobody can take anything away from him. Nor can anyone give anything to him." Way to conclude on the down note! *** Lynx is the rare-ish RPG villain who says interesting things. Telling Serge he's doomed, the big cat says, "This is not speculation or prediction. This is history!" *** Two little tidbits: Y'all notice the triforce on the floor of the room where you recruit Mojo? And that Nikki's song, "Sweet Sister of Mine," sure seems to be a Guns N' Roses reference?
