You guys mentioned AKMU not releasing anything. Chanhyuk had his solo debut and dropped his first full solo album last year. Yep, Suhyun had her solo debut with “Alien” 2 years ago. So… BIG BANG is still a group..and part of YGE..it’s just that the other members decided to sign with different management. So they are still be able to be BIG BANG and do group activities. GD is still signed with YGE and supposedly he said in a new magazine interview that he is preparing for a solo comeback..possibly in 3 months. So we will be hearing GD music soon.. hopefully. WINNER renewed their contract for another 5 years. There’s talks about a Hoony solo debut and album in the works. Also, YGE still have SECHSKIES, but yeah it’s been 2 years since their last comeback as well. 😆

Still, the most traumatizing survival show for me up to this day is WIN Who is Next and Mix and Match. Gosh, he really is the devil indeed there. But it still made Winner and iKON what they are today. Most especially iKON, Imagine going through 2 survival shows before debuting and then another 2 after, plus Bobby had SMTM3 during his trainee years with BI. It must have been so hard but they are still there despite everything.

God damn I’ve only heard bits and pieces of WIN and MIX and MATCH and it makes me shake my head. YG is such a cutthroat producer. I’m sure he’s not heartless but god damn if he compartmentalizes, he is damn good at it.

Fun fact if you didn’t already know, BLACKPINK was also originally a group of 7 when they were still forming the group. If you look it up you can find an old photo of them all in the old YG practice room.

about AKMU they had a comeback in 2021 with nakka but i believe you didn't react to it and they had a whole collaboration EP too with IU, zion.t, crush, beenzino and others in it but yeah it takes so long for artists in yg in general to drop new stuff and with babymonster for what ive seen of the last evaluation so far i still think it's a marketing move to make us and them think they'll not be a 7-member group but in reality they will because i just don't think they'd put so much money and work into all those introduction videos just to cut some of them out when you can see in a lot of them that there were more trainees in the babymonster project that were cut out in the process (the ones blurred out) but like you said yg is known for controversy so we'll never know for sure until the last evaluation ends lol

Honestly though WIN was so intense and I remember being such a team b fan (ikon) that when that last episode happened I was an absolute mess. Ikon has been through so much as a team.

Gotkatzy

Yes you MUST react to Chanhyuk’s “PANORAMA” and his full album! It’s soooo good! 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Gotkatzy

Yes we need SECHSKIES cb or another Eun Ji Won solo release!🙏🙏

Oh yeah WIN was brutal! If not Team A aka WINNER being the the older/experienced group struggling to find themselves + their backstories and then just Team B aka IKON who is super tight cohesive yet younger group who is seen as one step ahead of their Team A/WINNER hyung as + their backstories. I was such a wreck! I was biased towards Team A because I was familiar with the trainees/members at that time. In Team B, I only really knew BOBBY and BI. You know YGE stans are updated and supporting YG trainees even back then..so I would see pics or videos of the rumored upcoming boy group for YGE. But as I kept watching the show, I really started loving and becoming attached to Team B. So I was literally torn until ep8 and well the song that Team A self-composed song was what made me choose Team A/WINNER. I still have so much love for Team B/IKON and would be okay with whatever outcome/results. But it was a close battle tbh! Team A just edged Team B out in the end. Ohh and YHS was BRUTAL… the words and things he said to both WINNER and IKON on there… *whew* that hurt. But as you said PD, what they went through with the trainee life and the survival show made them who they are today. Both groups are very solid and cohesive groups who are super talented in their own unique ways. It’s so weird to not mention IKON as part of of YGE, but I’m glad I saw their beginnings and now they are pursuing a new start and beginning somewhere else. WINNER is still with YGE and I think them being mentors or being so involved in monthly evaluations of YGE trainees is a good idea! Along with AKMU as well because they’ve all been in BABY MONSTER’s shoes. Yoon and Hoony were from competition survival shows to YGE trainee and then did WIN to have a chance and debut. They know all the pressure and stress that these girls are feeling. Also, it’s good to have their perspective and feedback of what they see as opposed to YHS, producers, and dance trainers in the audience. They are all certified to give such feedback and critiques. It will only make BABY MONSTER even more stronger and understand the kind of passion, determination, teamwork, and dedication it is to stay in a high level even after they debut.

But wasn't it like with the Team A and Team B that both of them will debut at some point? I mean, I don't know if they presented it that way, probably not... but it would be dumb not to debut both of the groups, since it served so well as a pre-debut promotion. With Treasure it was really more like a true survival show, so I don't want to compare that to this situation and since there is no another group against them as in the case of iKON and Winner. I guess the best example could be BIGBANG, because that was also more like a documentary as this Last Evaluation is. But the thing is that was way back then and the promotion of each member wasn't that big (or G-Dragon and TaeYang were already popular and known because of YG Family, but there was no way they wouldn't make it...). But the important thing to keep in mind, Yang Hyun Suk gave SeungRi and Jang Hyun Seung second chance and one of them made it after all...

WiseSmellyLegs

Important thing which surprised me here is that Ruka went to Pharita for help with the English pronunciation and not to Ahyeon. I agree with your statement that Ahyeon is sure to debut, no matter what. Based on her all rounder skills. But also based on the fact she is fluent in English and Chinese and that is useful a lot if they are aiming to go global with them. So because of that Pharita will be useful in this way as well!

Sascha

You're right, the girls didnt seem shocked and went into The Last Evaluation without the impression they would debut already but here's my issue with this: they clearly filmed Last Evaluation months before they even announced Babymonster, so why would you announce a new group, show them as 7 members and then even introduce all 7 of them with personal background stories etc. under the name Babymonster? Even with the girls knowing all that, that's kinda messed up imo, not only for fans but also for the members who didnt make it in the end, because they would always be linked as the "almost Babymonster members" from now on cause everyone could watch the process. I still hope it's a total fake out and YG went into this show with the idea of eleminating members but then througout the show realised they work well as 7 so he changed his mind. That would explain why they announced all 7 of them before they announced a show that was already recorded almost a year ago.

Wait, trainees used to get beat? Man, there's a lot I don't know about kpop.

formoftherapy

1st gen got their asses BEAT or physically disciplined. 2nd gen prolly just got hit and disciplined. But you have to understand—that’s not K-pop. That’s KOREA. Up until recent history (literally 2010) it was OK and I believe even legal for teachers to hit their students in PUBLIC EDUCATION. I will say: Korea really ascended to that “elite” academic level though when they kept those strict policies in place but banned hitting. However, I also believe that with the teachers losing power? That’s why school bullying has been such a big issue the past few years. Students have a lot less to fear and back then, while bullying existed it wasn’t such a widespread issue because teachers kept people in check. If you have the stomach for it, when you look up fucked up crimes in Korea where kids end up dead because of their parents? It’s because they took the disciplining too far. The Republic of South Korea, what’s considered “normal modern society” is only 70 years old (give or take a couple years). Before that they’re a country born out of violence, fighting, revolution. And something to consider when Korea was established in 1948, after only TWO years of escaping Japanese imperialism for THIRTY FIVE years, North Korea INVADED South Korea and started a three year long war. So imagine having your culture borderline erased by Japanese people (who are also seen as traitors to Korea because they are originally from Korea) and then being invaded by your OWN people on the other side of a border. But they didn’t lose or give in and kept building up. Koreans by nature are AGGRESSIVE and I think that’s why K-Pop is so popping. A lot of these people have turned their aggression no longer to violence but to PASSION. Sorry for the long history lesson 😅

Woowawo

oh no, thank you for the long history lesson! That sort of extra context for everything is super interesting to learn about. It also got me thinking for a while about a lot of the Korean movies and dramas I've watched so far, and I think some of what you said helps explain some things about them that stood out to me as being so different from other media.

AKMU released an EP, Next Episode, in 2021. One of the best!

Gone is do difficult to sing right. Rosé even changes the chorus part when she sings Gone live, i'm guessing because the original puts too much stress on her voice
