I think that there are so many new young groups that do a much better job. But unfortunately they don't get enough attention because they come from smaller labels. I don't know if I had too high expectations of BM, but I think the hype is too high. Groups like VVUP, Kiss of Life, Ichillin, Young Posse, ILLIT, ARTMS etc. try to create new things. BM tend to rely on the well-known. Young Posse in particular, who get involved in the production, write their own parts and bring their own style into every song, are so underrated. Maybe I'm alone in my opinion, but I just like it when music evolves.

Thank you PD for listening to Babymonster!

I am writing my comment in the notes app while the video is playing, but I had to write this on its own! You watched Fuego by The New Six?? Hell yes!! Something tells me there is a chance for a reaction to Daniel Jikal as well 😎😎

Brandon Lee

Funny you say this.. if you actually looked at Batter Up’s credits Asa got credited as a writer.. so BABYMONSTER is innovating their own style but in small steps .. (because I believe they are much younger than the other gen 5 groups on average?)

Brandon Lee

In one of the many YG announcement videos done by YG himself before the album dropped (I believe this line came from when he let it be known there’s a mini album coming) he himself said he views BABYMONSTER like his baby.. like his daughter.. because Chiquita is his own daughter’s age.. he was going to oversee and watch everything very closely when it comes to them.. because of that.. Now.. how does a father/daughter relationship usually progress? Father is very protective of the daughter at the beginning and slowly over time he gets less and less protective giving her more and more space and freedom.. If we extract that to BM, YG himself will look after them for the first 1-2 maybe 3 years..? Is my guess.. while also letting them slowly have more say and stuff… in what direction and how songs will be .. this may be in the form of more self produced.. or self written stuff.. and once he deems that the girls are ready.. he’ll just take his hands and let go of the steering wheel and let them do most of the work

I guess Charlie Puth really liked Ahyeon's cover so he gave them a song hehe.

I will immediately say I am not into Kpop remixes (both official ones and fan made ones)… The only Kpop remix I DO LIKE is God of Music (Trot Remix) + God of Light Music is truly a funny song. But besides that I might have kind of liked one NCT 127 - Kick It remix, but I didn’t listen to it that much + ages ago I used to listen to one Doom Dada (T.O.P) + Come Back Home (2NE1) + Overdose (EXO) fan made remix, but that’s it, nothing else ever interested me enough. So based on this I was thinking: “Huh… this EP is so cyclical… (some The New Six level shit!), there is an intro called MONSTERS… so why didn’t they put there as the 7th song an outro called BABY/BABYS, which would musically lead to the beginning (MONSTERS) as some Vine-like (YouTube Shorts, Reels, TikTok) content?” I mean… if you think about the track order. It starts with MONSTERS (as the second part of their name) and then we get Sheesh & Like That (where one is the title track and second one should have been as well!!) and then we got to listen to the songs we know, but in the backwards order… as if we were getting to the beginning/to the moment of us meeting them for the first time, when they were younger/BABYS. I am no music producer, but if that outro was there and if it was done the way I said, that EP would have been the perfect cycle ever!! And I bet it would have brought them even more replays on streaming, because already as it is now, I always go there to listen to Like That and my mind goes: “Hmm, let’s hear it with the Intro + Sheesh as well, it’s all together less than 4 minutes (which is like the regular length of a song I am used to)” and then after Like That I just keep it playing till the end! But THIS REMIX… Stuck In The Middle Remix might be competing with God of Music (Trot Remix)! So it is hard for me to think I would not want this song to be there 😅😅 and to be honest this is the only thing I have been thinking about in the regard of the question if anything could have been done better, because I am fully satisfied with this as their debut/debut mini album!! Because this EP simply shows, why it is perfect to have all 7 of them! After the Last Evaluation, when there was said only 5 would debut, my formation was: Ruka, Asa and Ahyeon (As the two main rappers and main dancers with Ahyeon who is the core and versatile/“all lead positions” member + keeping in mind that Asa can sing really good too, so technically YG could have gone back to the really early years and debut them as trio/Swi.T 😅😅, which would be crazy to do, but I consider these 3 as the base for this group) and to them I added: Pharita (as the main vocalist in this case here) and Chiquita (as the lead vocalist, lead dancer a based on Yang Hyun Suk’s words possibly in the future a lead rapper). But during the whole time of waiting for this EP to happen, I realized back then (before Last Evaluation, based only on the Introducing Videos) Rami was presented as “the Rosé”/the main vocalist of this group and the same Yang Hyun Suk said after the final line up announcement about Rora (that he considers her as the main vocalist for this group as well). So I started to think why I wanted to eliminate two main vocalists? That’s dumb, right? 😅😅 And the reason is I focused too much on the aspect of them going global right from the start, so an English speaker as Pharita is really useful + the fact that it would be weird to introduce Chiquita (as the really young member) and then not to debut her… + her potential to grow quickly and get even better as their career will go on. So initially (before Last Evaluation) my formation was: Ruka, Asa, Ahyeon, Rami and Rora, but in this case they would lose a member (Pharita), who is useful for their global reach and a member (Chiquita), who will always be the baby of the group, but at the same time I can totally see her becoming “a monster” with her skills. And so… why does this EP show it is perfect to have all 7 of them? As you said yourself… with this EP they are showing us they will focus on both the Korean market and the global market and for both markets a different formation/combination of vocalists is needed. + the aspect of Chiquita could be applied to the whole group in the way as you said they are all young/“babys” (except Ruka, who is 2002 liner and technically Pharita (2005 liner), which makes her adult as well), right now but they will grow along their career. Now to your feedback to this EP: As you compared them to BIGBANG & 2NE1 in some parts: I have said this many times since their announcement, they are the ressurection of YG Ent. I mean, the fact that Like That feels like the first generation of YG Ent. is just coincidence (I’ll get to that by the end of this comment). But the rest feels like: “They are showing us they have it all, everything from anything throughout the history of YG (at least Kpop related, obviously I don’t think Baemon will do music like Stony Skunk 😅😅)”. To make it clear with the 7 members version songs + the remix (you got confused in a few parts): Everything stays the same, Ahyeon has chorus parts and ad-libs here and there, so the song itself isn’t really changed as if she got brand new sections/her own new lines. Remix regarding raps/all lyrical part stayed the same, only the music is changed/remixed. As you said: “I feel like Ruka brings back a CL energy”: Yang Hyun Suk himself said in the Last Evaluation she has the most hip hop vibe of all of them (not just rapping, but dancing, attitude and personality as well). And now I am not sure if this is my thought or if that was said there as well and I just totally agree with that, but she gives vibes of the old school YG the most! To your words to Batter Up & Stuck In The Middle: As I said those songs were meant to be not only pre-releases, but pre-releases, which were originally meant to be b-sides songs. They work as the part of the whole listening experience way better than on their own with a music video. About which you made a perfect statement! Although I see Baemon as the resurrection of YG Ent., they should have given them different visual style to their music videos, which has never been seen in YG. Regarding your words of them having those songs fully in English: I said more above already, so I’ll just add Monsters (Intro) is also fully in English, so only Sheesh and Batter Up are songs, which include Korean as well. And now, finally… How did it all happen that Charlie Puth made a song for Baemon?: Yang Hyun Suk said Charlie gave the song to them as a gift. Which… well, it is true that Charlie noticed Ahyeon’s performance of Dangerously, because on his profile he replied to someone he was aware of that and he liked it a lot. But rather than him giving this song to them as a gift, it was more like YG reached out to him and they made a deal, at least I would say so… Because from what I know from Charlie’s fans coming to Baemon’s subreddit, this song leaked before as one of his demos, so he had it as an unreleased song for himself/song he had been working on before they contacted him. So based on this we know YG didn’t ask him to produce a song like this. But who knows if they told him what kind of song they were looking for or if they left it up to him and he chose this one from his own will and it just fits SO PERFECTLY both for them as a group, but also in the aspect of having a song from really early years of YG as well (as you said 1TYM-like/Se7en-like) to truly make this EP as the “full YG package for anyone who has ever liked anything from YG”. And that is all I had to say… I have just realized my favorite track of babymons7er is the most se7en-like song 😅😅 Huh, funny!

WiseSmellyLegs

You are definitely not alone in your opinion, since Baemon is the most hated Kpop group right now 😅😅 (By that I don’t want to say you are a hater… just to make it clear there is a lot of people not being into them/even hating them). I don’t want to talk about every example you gave, because on some we agree and on some we don’t… but one that surprised me a lot is ILLIT, because to be fair they feel like a variation to NewJeans. Also in their case the statement of “coming from small label” doesn’t really fit. I don’t mean it in any bad way, but they come from Belift Lab, which makes them sisters to ENHYPEN and them obviously the fact that Belift Lab is under Hybe Labels, which… HYBE Corporation is currently the 4th biggest music label IN THE WORLD. Anyway! I am glad I see Young Posse being mentioned. They are truly a hip hop group thrown to the Kpop scene, basically something like 1TYM was in the first generation. And I love it! Although Macaroni Cheese was kind of unclear for me what they were going for, with XXL I AM FULLY ON THE HYPE TRAIN! I am looking forward to The Black Label Girl Group and this style is the style I would like for them to have 😅😅 (because it is Teddy’s (who comes from 1TYM) big project).

WiseSmellyLegs

Interesting comparison! I think Yang Hyun Suk did mean his statement there. It is top to bottom his project and he cares about it and them as well! For him it is like: “Things got fucked up in the history of this company, but we are trying to get back from that and this group is the first bigger step/start of the new chapter” I don’t want to be mean to Treasure, but their case is complicated, because they caught the bullet the most and the timing for them was really bad (meant like they were not involved in anything obviously…), but because of that it is hard to start with them as with the “new chapter of the label”, although at least for them Yang Hyun Suk tried something similar with the “reboot announcement”. The only thing I am not sure is the freedom they could get. Because Asa participated on Batter Up, but that was the only song… And also it was only her… But at the same time this might be because she/all of them are still learning. At least with Asa we got to see she was learning to compose!

Brandon Lee

Well, we know that Asa already writes, because BIGTONE asked her to write a song to show her skills which she did and performed it for one of her evals.. and we kinda also know that Chiquita is learning to rap.. Ahyeon and Rami both know how to fix chords and stuff... so.. for Asa to be the only one so far? Makes complete sense to me, because we knew she could write already. Chiquita is the youngest one, and the least developed one (age wise) outta the group so it makes complete sense that YG would want to make sure the group is monitored to protect her and the rest of this young group from the K-Pop audience that we know can be terrible. Also, we know Asa and Ruka can be creative with Chereo and dance, so they could eventually have fingerprints on the chereos they do (maybe not get credits, but they could have an influence) To me he's giving them safer songs to start to let them develop over time and then he'll slowly start to let them show their true colors. He's essentially buying time for them, similar to what he did with Ahyeon and her health stuff, he bought time for her to recoup and come back before actually letting the group do promotions and live stuff. I guess we will see what it looks like at the end of the year when they release their first full album (if we are to take YG at his word, which to this point he's stuck to every word so far)

I think this was such solid debut for the girls! I tried to listen to this with a clear mind, but like you, I’m such a lover of the YG sound. I understood exactly what you were talking about the similar styles these songs have to previous YG acts and their roots, which I can understand why they might start them off with this at first. Like we’ve seen with Blackpink, everyone will compare BM to their predecessor until they find that sound that screams, “BABY MONSTER!” This is a start for them and hopefully will grow into their own colors as they also grow up as well. Like That was my favorite song from them as well - I’ve missed this sound in general since I grew up with it and to hear them absolutely kill it makes me more excited for their future songs. I hope they can explore this sound more because it’s so fitting for them. Side note: I’m glad someone else can appreciate Big Bang’s intros in their older albums - they created so many great ones for their albums! I was so happy when they turned Alive into Still Alive, the full song version. It ended up being my favorite Big Bang song ever and was a song I can go to during some of my darkest days when I didn’t want to listen to anything.
