Probably nothing you haven't seen before, but here we go!

Lot of new footage to work with these days :D I'm going to be making a new video showing my new (slightly more)proper/linearized/keyed/tracked workflow pretty quick here!

And the Optimizing Cycles video I mention:

could you show me the step by step to remove the green screen from the videos and cut the unused parts of the green screen....thanks

I am INCREDIBLY interested in your hard drive named "Laserbutt" haha. That gave me a good laugh. Great video! I watch these while eating my lunch!

Thank you Ian! All I want to do is watch you model and texture things. I don't care if there's "nothing new" about the video. I don't want anything new!! Thx man

needs a random insult to the architect, a beautiful space and some moron has put in a vending machine or something, to make it asymmetrical. You know the thing, it always happens a beautiful space and someone with no sense of design puts a notice up with sellotape it always happens.

This is SO fun!

You make Blender look so good. I never wanted to switch until I saw your videos. They should sponsor your show... Nice job. Reminds me of the Kansas City airport - check out the ceiling and light fixtures. Also might tilt the window wall like Milwaukee Art Museum. https://www.fsb.de/res/media/fsbna.com/Media/Inspirations/Projects/Milwaukee_Art_Museum/milwaukee-art-museum-3/1/milwaukee-art-museum-3.jpg

Just watching the windows clock in the corner and seeing time jump as you waffle on composition was hilarious. Did you pull an all nighter?

Ian, will the original episodes of Dynamo be continued? I have so many questions about the story there.

IanHubert

Yes!!! The shot is definitely missing that final layer. Where it’s at now is what it would have looked like 30 years ago- I’m excited to layer it up a bit!! Haha definitely a vending machine!

IanHubert

I’m not totally sure in which form (I still have dreams of wrapping up all the old footage we shot), but mostly yes! The new Dynamo Dream episodes are about to start overlapping with a bunch of the old stuff! Always drove me crazy that we never wrapped that up :D

Hi Ian! Amazing tutorial. Question, you may have answered this before... have you tried using Unreal 5? Just curious on your take in using it to construct your scenes. Thanks!

Anonymous

i really like the videos where you just work on a shot for a couple hours i would love to see more

Anonymous

I agree. I ALWAYS learn something new and cool that is some throwaway comment or keystroke I didn't know about.

Anonymous

I love that your using brutalism as a concept to work off of, ive always been a fan of that kinda style

Anonymous

Really looking forward to the updated linearized workflow video!

Blaek Creative

Okey man, you gotta do a total workflow on that greenscreen work, tracking in blender, blending etc for real!

Anonymous

Hey Ian, thanks for another great tutorial! I was wondering if you linearized your keyed footage before importing it, or was it RAW linear footage you could just bring in? Thanks

On episode 2 of ‘Chris loves that shot but can’t quite work out why’ - circa 1:20 of Salad mug when the focus shifts from the glass pane to the rooftops above. It’s definitely the shot that stuck with me the most. There’s a lot of feeling to it & it’s killing me that I just can’t work out why… Would love to see a viewport BTS screenshot of that setup but I don’t suppose I could find that anywhere!

IanHubert

AH! Thanks Chris! To me the funny thing about that shot is that my experience of creating it was the same as the character's; I was setting up the shot to look at the rain on the window, then noticed I still had the animation of the robot out of focus in the background, and I knew the shot *should* feature the robot, but I really wanted to show off how good the rain looked, so I put in the rack focus to split the difference. Which means, like, mechanically, it's just me hamfistedly trying to show off Alex Heskett's badass rain shader, but from a story standpoint it kinda quietly establishes that Jo's more in tune with the little things, and the outside world keeps butting in. There's some inspiration from Bong Joon-ho's "The Host" in there too, if you've seen that. It's a monster movie where one of the first proper times you see the monster it's initially quiet and obscured in the background, and it's eerie having something so important not wrapped in the usual "front and center" cinematic language. In the theater it was pretty unnerving :D ( https://youtu.be/vaxwv1rndPI at 1:33 ) BTS wise, it's literally just a little windowpane in front of the camera, with the rest of the scene behind it, and a little rack focus. (https://nuggetblends.gumroad.com/l/Rain_ that's the rain shader I used) It looks absolutely fantastic in basically every scene I've used it in, especially a tad out of focus. One thing we don't tend to do often with CG shots is film "through" things, like mirrors or panes of glass. A lot of "real life" cinematography involves happy accidents, exploring the location and finding angles, in a way that isn't as easy with CG, so I think we tend to set things up more "direct"- but I think it's a good reminder to myself to find ways to "film through" things- so thanks a ton for that! :D

This really scratched an itch for me, so to speak! I remember you saying (think it was at a talk) that the reason your shots are as polished as they are is because you spend more time poking away at them- this adds another dimension though that I think is important to flag- it’s not just about composing a shot, but doing so to communicate something about a character - that’s what makes a shot stick with you and elevates it from beautiful to truly poignant. I suppose you cannot underestimate the value of serendipity! Thanks for such a compressive reply, I’m going to spend some time going through the links/suggestions; there’s much to be gleaned from this 😄

Can't thank you enough for making this awesome video. Sharing your experience and the best part: literally narrating each step and explaning why you took every decision in order to achieve a realistic environment. Trust me, I've seen countless videos about blender and is not common to see the ammount of valuable info I saw here, because many videos are focused in only one or two things like: how to model an airport chair. Lol. THANKS IAN! I'm building up my own structures with some random footage (green screen) I found on the internet. Lets see how that ends ;)

The problems with all my scenes: they are all looking like miniature scenes. I noticed that you are oft placing your camera on top like in this video showing in the down direction. Is it the secret?

Sitting in SFO looking out at all the wacky vehicles out on the tarmac. We need to see some freeways pirates driving baggage jeeps or those ladder trucks. Next time you’re at SeaTac grab some references!

I love all your tutorials but in this case I can't stop watching it since minute 39 to the end on a loop. The two times you come back because you didn't go to sleep making changes are hilarious. I see myself so reflected that I don't feel alone XD Thank you so much

Btw. This looks pretty much exactly as the Terminal 2 in Antalya, Turkey. And now, post-season it's pretty much just as empty.
