Really didn't expect to finish this today- but hey! Here we go!

High Res Link, if you want! Feel free to use it in whatever you like.

I'm organizing out the riders/vehicles into assets I'll be uploading soon, here, along with a breakdown going through a bunch of things I learned (although a lot of the fun stuff (mixing IK with mocap, for example) I've already gone through in videos last year).

It's fun starting on a project like this (which was really just supposed to be a single shot (or two)), and letting it expand a bit and seeing where it goes. I started developing backstories for various pilots, and practice tracks, and all that. It felt a little silly, but at the same time now I have all that backstory in my pocket, and I feel like it could come in handy in the future.

Just as an update, the sound team is still possibly only a week away from sending me a final mix on Dynamo Dream! Stuff's about to get wild! :D

HyperBole! The Hyperball Hates You

www.patreon.com/IanHubert Finally finished this up! Sorry to anyone who thought it was going to be longer; that'd be a blast some day, but this got it out of my system for now :) Solid mix of hand animated stuff, physics sims, and data from a Rokoko mocap suit (learned a ton about IK rigging, too, to mix it all up)! Music by Wilbert Roget II Thanks to the Photoscanned Models, Sean Farbolin, Kaitlin Romig, Johnny Valencia, Nate Taylor, Ian Hubert

Freakin crazy man! Those still renders (with the uncompressed grain goodness) are just amazing

Anonymous

Its amazing🔥🔥 as always

Anonymous

This is insane. It’s like mad max meets Star Wars meets cocaine?

Jose Vega

yisus man.... ur a genius!

Anonymous

Congratulations on finishing it, Ian! Great stuff!

Anonymous

Seriously, this is what separates the wheat from the chaff. Legendary Ian!

Anonymous

Mad! 🔥🔥

Anonymous

... it's full of greebles.

Anonymous

Wow man wow! Love it

Anonymous

AWESOME....!!!

Anonymous

how does the hyperbole work

Anonymous

I just watched it twice at .25 speed. I'm sure there will always be new things to notice. I'd love to learn how you made those machines get torn apart in such a natural way.

Anonymous

this is amazing. love the stills as well.

Anonymous

I always thought this was a scene in dynamo dream, didn't realize it was it's own thing. Everything is SUPER convincing, except the gunslinger's animation is just a bit too... CG feeling. I can't tell what the real problem is, but it feels stiff- maybe he isn't reacting well to the acceleration of the pod. But criticizing feels pretty hollow when it's this good.

Anonymous

woohoo. So sick!

Anonymous

I love it!

Anonymous

Love everything about this, specially the color scheme.

Anonymous

This is scary good

Valics Lehel

You drive me crazy and give to me a hype to do more and more in Blender animation... thank you.

Anonymous

my mouth truly feels like a champion ! 🏆😁 thanks hyper-o

Anonymous

Amazing. Fave details: 1) The Gunslinger is the Man himself! 2) FIG BAN on the infoscreens 3) The SEXUAL TENSION gauge One thing that slightly bothers me is the really clean no smoking sign in the first scene. I understand that it only appear very briefly and thus has to read well, but since it's smack dab in the middle there, it kind of feels a bit out of place. But who can complain when the work is of this caliber? Not me.

Raffo VFX

Lovely❤️ dynamo dream will shake the planet!

Anonymous

I could watch it all day to look for the little details, like the working bot with the protection helmet. Probably will ;)

Anonymous

This is madness Ian! It's feature film quality done by you. I wouldn't be surprise to see something of this quality in an episode of death love robots series. You are such an inspiration, also funny and humble.

Anonymous

Mmm parts of it would really benefit a lot from slow motion/lower speed like for example from 8th-10nth second, I didn't even notice the catch before watching with slower speed in youtube. Overall I liked to watch it in .75 speed :)

Anonymous

So much detail and I love the audio design and music!

Anonymous

Oh God, I think I need to change my pants... This is the best thing I've seen all year

Anonymous

Beautiful! What type of film grain did you use here?

Anonymous

Ohhshit, this looks so good.

IanHubert

Ah thanks Petteri! And HUH! Yeah you're totally right- that's basically not textured. Should have added grime or a specular map or something!

IanHubert

That's true! I don't do a lot of hand animation, and I found that once I was done I usually had to slow things down fairly significantly for everything to feel right and weighty (that part in particular). I wasn't able to get realtime playback with these scenes, so I was mostly working in flat shaded view, and it was always surprising to me how much faster everything felt when it was rendered properly. I'm sure that's something that becomes easier to judge with a bit more practice.

IanHubert

AH! I have a tutorial just for that! :D https://www.patreon.com/posts/hyperbole-engine-39946567

IanHubert

I basically made it to be on a screen in the background, but I got carried away. Technically it's happening during Dynamo Dream, somewhere :P And yeah, I know what you mean. There's a lot about that shot in particular that isn't particularly rooted in physics, and I'm definitely not a good enough animator to sell it :P. It also doesn't help that the whole denim outfit feels very "painted on". I think my big focus was trying to sell the flow-of-motion aspect, which I think turned out alright.

Anonymous

absolutely amazing. Almost sad knowing the level of detail and world-building that won’t be noticed by a lot of viewers. Totally worth it though.

IanHubert

Because no one's been able to stop it yet. Naw I never actually figured out specific rules; I always figured they were really loosely enforced by a panel of wild judges who were easily swayed if something was "cool enough". Effectively you get points for going around the track, but there's a multiplier if you have the Hyperball in your possession. Kinda just a Quidditch/Motorball/Podracing mashup :P

Anonymous

Looks great, man!

Anonymous

Hahaha the "sexual tension" gauge killed me

Anonymous

Amazing!

Anonymous

Insane!

Anonymous

It's incredible! And you're amazing too!

Anonymous

THEY JITTER!!! <3

Anonymous

So damn cool

IanHubert

Oh thanks Eireann! Wilbert did a great job on the music (he made it for a different project, but it worked really well for this!). Actually- I haven't trusted myself to handle my own audio in a few years, so it was a nice confidence boost (although big loud in-your-face engines are a LOT easier to "mix" than something subtle, for sure. I didn't even mix, just made everything loud :P).

Anonymous

Incredible!

Anonymous

Amazing Ian! I was just wondering how did you do the thrusters seen at around 00:11. Shader trick? geo? Would love to know a bit more.

Anonymous

I WANT MOOOOOOOORRRREEEE !!!

Anonymous

SO GOOD! can i ask how you get the thruster to look sso real and like its taking off in the beginning?

Anonymous

Unbelievably epic

Anonymous

This thing turned out so fun! It's great to see it "finished". I died laughing at the punch-in on the jittery cereal and completely lost it for "your mouth's a champion". Thanks for nutso stuff like this!

Anonymous

Your mouth's a champion! Hahahaha

Anonymous

I love being a spectator into your imagination and creativity... blows my mind. :)

Anonymous

Man this is so much fun! And seeing all the components come together, so good

Anonymous

this is the dopest shit ever

Anonymous

I like the popcorn machine ;)

Anonymous

I keep watching it over and over

Anonymous

Why do even bother to try and get up in the morning? I hate you. (Seriously awesome work, Ian!)

Anonymous

THEY JITTER! Sooo funny! But honestly, was that your initial idea or was it a bug that you turned into a feature? I'm dying to know haha

Anonymous

Wow, that is amazing! Was the graininess intended to give it a sort of 70s film feel?

Anonymous

Ah, man, it's a pity you only have one pair of hands: I want to binge watch 18 hours of this stuff! Perhaps unwittingly, you've captured the feel of Mega City One from the Judge Dredd strip in the UK's 2000AD comic. The futurism, the weirdness, the questionable sporting events...essentially a fantastic backdrop for any story you want to tell because it's a place where literally anything can happen.

Anonymous

wow, that's great. at the 13th second, a funny frame was hidden. here is the exact timecode 0:00:13:03. https://youtu.be/AqA71cWs1WA?t=13

Anonymous

XD I just saw it too.

Anonymous

You can really tell that someone loves what they do when they make something like this.

Anonymous

im so glad i subbed

Anonymous

Super nice!!!! I LOVE EVERY SINGLE FRAME!

Anonymous

Holy shit, was this rendered out in Cycles? This is incredible man.

IanHubert

Oh thanks Jeziel! Yeah, all cycles (although the eevee renders worked pretty darn well, too- just didn't play as nice with all the emissive textures)
