After much distraction and procrastination, finally getting to this reaction. Absolutely love this movie, probably my third favorite Ghibli/Miyazaki movie after Castle in the Sky and Princess Mononoke.

Imo her changing back and forth is based on her state of mind, not necessarily just "love." Essentially, when she's "feeling young and happy," she gets younger. Gazing upon her hometown again for the first time in so long brought her a sense of nostalgia, so she felt young again. Love is often associated with youth (to an extent), especially when that love is new and fresh. When she's mentally or spiritually down on herself, particularly her beauty, she reverts back. Another thought is Howl's feelings for her also play a part, especially that part with the town burning. She stepped out, and Howl's up there fighting to protect her. But also in addition to that, the witch's powers were long taken away, so the curse also probably got significantly weaker. For sleeping, it could either be 1) the magic/curse literally shuts down during sleep, or 2) deep down she's still young, so it's like her natural state. In mind, body, and spirit, she's still and neutral... tranquil. Or something. It's difficult to put into words, but I hope you get what I mean. XD Also, I think they didn't change the door right away because it was still possible for the castle to get hit while it's changing, and that could've fucked things up worse. I believe they were trying to make it more difficult to be tracked and found by their magical enemies. I think it was the only way to clear the door destinations without Howl's magic. And bruh, at the end she's clearly young. Just young. That's it. :P
