Content

Thank everyone who supports the channel.  Your patronage is the only reason the team can make these videos without relying on sponsorships.

Given increasing uncertainty on YouTube with shorts, plus in the comments the number of scams and bots that flood in, I'm trying an experiment:

New privilege for all 🐝 Bonnie Bees 🐝:

As the verified humans that you are, you alone will be able to post in the comment sections of the videos.

Unfortunately, there is no way to just approve everyone at once.  Instead, there's a three step process:

1. If you haven't already, sign up

2. Then leave a comment on the most recent video.

3. Send a message through Patreon with your YouTube name and the comment.

Then you be approved as a commenter -- afterward all your comments will be automatically approved.

I'm sorry that this is a bit annoying, and it will take a long and tedious time to get through everyone, so please be patient.   But the hope is this will get rid of all the bot/scam comments while also raising the visibility in the comments of all the people who help make the videos happen.

I resent needing to pay to comment. I understand the concern but this does a few things: it assumes your audience can't figure out what a bot comment looks like, and it stops your audience from engaging with your content without directly paying you to do so. People who are your patrons already pay to be heard in two extra spaces (here on Patreon and on your Discord server), so rather than giving your patrons something new, you're mostly just taking something away from everyone else under the guise of protecting them from themselves. I also doubt restricting comments is going to be good for your engagement metrics. (I also find the experiment odd given your stance on the financially unstable joining your Patreon. I can afford to be a Bonnie bee right now for example, but my financial situation is not set in stone, and frequently changes, and I am not a frequenter of Reddit).

I commented on the 'experiment with comments' vid, username @unicornfoal, with the comment "I don't comment often, but just in case I ever want to...".

I fear putting the comments section behind barriers of entry that require you to already love and support CGP Grey (or at least care about enough to click onto a subreddit) is going to come at the huge cost of creating artificial environments where you will no longer recieve feedback from more casual viewers or people who dislike your content but have something productive to say about it. To me this is ripe grounds for creating an echo chamber of false positivity- fundamentally altering the function of the comments section as a whole into something way less engaging and isn't worth it just to get rid of scambots or sexbots.

Also the way you frame this pivot in your Patreon post focuses more on gaining more monetary support as the primary goal with the sexbot/chatbot deterrent almost as secondary. But it is the opposite for the Youtube video itself. I understand and would be happy to support your videos as you are one of my favorite Youtubers, but not empasizing the obvious monetary gains and even framing it as a better way to get rid of sexbots and chatbots (especially given my critisms with the experiment) feels irresponsible at best and fraudulant at worst.

If Patreon allows it, might I suggest adding “Can comment on YouTube videos” to the Bonnie Bee Brigade perks list? Yes, I might. In fact, I'm pretty sure I just did.

Two copyright strikes against VTH’s channel is disgusting behavior by Grey. VloggingThroughHistory is a small channel run by a highschool history teacher. Chris (VTH) isn’t a bottom feeding reactor - he creates his own content in addition to adding his own deep historical analysis and commentary to other creator’s videos. He’s “reaction” to one of your older videos was my first introduction to your content and the reason for me subscribing to your channel and joining the Patreon. It was YOUR fans who begged him to react to your video in the first place, you authoritarian dolt. His students watch his channel. The guy is practically a saint and it’s sickening to watch you bully a small channel that’s beloved in the YT history community. Even much larger channels than yours love having him react to their content and often times comment their support directly. Instead of pitching a fit, you could’ve reached out to him and asked him not to react to your content. He would’ve pulled it immediately and apologized. He’s just a history teacher who sometimes uses other people’s content to serve as a video textbook for his history lesson.

This is a scumbag move Grey. I won’t be renewing my patreon subscription at the end of this billing cycle, but I will spend my last couple weeks as your patron to call you out for this boneheaded move until you address it and or resolve it. And by resolve, I mean rescind the two strikes. Unreal. This may be the shortest fandom I’ve ever experienced. You’ve lost me as a new fan, subscriber and patron. Oversimplified, Blue Jay, Sam O’nella (whenever he returns), Extra Credit History, and many others are just as good if not better content creators than you and none of them have ever objected to VTH’s reactions. Quite the opposite. They show him love and encourage him to react to more of their content. That’s how most other reputable content creators behave. You’re an anomaly and, in this case, that’s not a compliment.
