Yeah seriously

Commentary

Were this adapted into an anime, these four panels would be stretched out into a single episode (minus six minutes of opening credits and recaps). Approximately twenty-five percent of it would be reaction shots of various characters.

Panel two wasn't a super duper ultra mega challenge, but it was a challenge. This was mostly because of Jay's pose, as I had a certain angle to her posture in mind relative to the unicorn, and I had trouble getting that and making it look like Jay was on the offensive.

Fortunately, she's a magic user, so ultimately I could get away with "okay, this would be a bad pose for an attack, but you've got to remember that her hands on fire."

Level up Jay! Level up!

Windscion

So, "gasp" because? (1) The noive of her to say that! (2) just got hit with flaming fist. (3) just realized something about Jack/Jay/Jill.

Thisguy

If this was an anime, this whole instance would be a flashback.

AstroChaos

(4) Realization that her first instinct was correct and Jack is lucid. My guess at least

AstroChaos

Jack go attack! Jack talk smack! but most importantly Jack demand you bring him back!

Stephen Gilberg

I thought DBZ was about the only anime like that. Maybe just the worst offender, or the best-known one.

kaitou

This is why I didn't watch DB*. I watched anime for Japanese practice. How much practice can one get from two guys just going "woosh-woosh-woosh" at each other for 20 minutes?

Some Ed

Over 9000. I'm sorry, but you know it's unfortunately the only possible response to your question.

Dragon Ball isn't really guilty of this trope though, Dragon Ball Z is a VERY different show from its predecessor. Dragon Ball starts as a retelling of Journey to the West, after all.

Stephen Gilberg said "DBZ" and kaitou said "DB*" which I believe includes DBZ. For what it's worth, I haven't really watched any of the rest of Dragon Ball, in part because of over 9000, and pretty much everything that directly led up to that. But more importantly, the focus on fighting was way over the top. I tend to prefer things like EGS where people actually sometimes communicate and thus avoid fighting. From the references I've seen to the rest of Dragon Ball, it sounds like that aspect is still there, along with the ever more powerful forms.
