A during the evening EGSNP?!

Commentary

Really, this is a reasonable response to seeing someone magically vanish in a puff of smoke at the will of a floating unicorn.

Sure, it's a dream, and she knows it's a dream, but, y'know.

Scary unicorn is scary.

And that's all that's going on here.

Clearly.

Of course.

Also scary Jay is scarier.

*crosses "horse seyunolu" off of list of theories* *scribbles in "Jay = Arthur's (grand)daughter?"*

Windscion

Just daughter, I think. But that's based on parsimoniousness, which I think fits Dan's general approach.

Jared Fattmann

Yeah, I went and checked Arthur's wiki entry after I commented and was all "oh, 'unknown daughter', there you go"

But you can leave in Scary Unicorn Seyunolu (or would it be Scary Unicorn Uryom?)^_^

AstroChaos

I'm still thinking granddaughter, just because of age. We know Arthur doesn't just look old, he was retired and came out of it to take command again. He could have an unknown daughter that in turn has an unknown granddaughter, after all. Reading been the lines of Jay's earlier thoughts, she apparently has a complicated relationship with him at the the very least, or mixed-up feelings about him.

Windscion

I'm thinking her reaction is too strong for a grandfather. Direct sire is much more of an injury to her sense of self. (Unless she is financially dependent upon him.)

Windscion

Oh snap. I just realized something significant. Jack/Jay/Jill's reaction makes it fairly clear that she's lucid. I do not think that Susan will miss that detail.

Some Ed

What? Actually, I don't think it does. If she knew she was dreaming, and one of the characters in the dream she knew to seem like her father or grandfather disappeared, why would it matter? But if she's not lucid, he could be any sort of beloved person, and she might be miffed at his disappearance. To me, her reaction is someone who isn't lucid. That could be my flattened affect speaking, or the fact that when I'm lucid and things don't go my way, I generally just will them to go my way harder and it works. (Unless, of course, I want to fly higher than chest height and it's one of *those* dreams, in which case it takes willing a *lot* harder and I might wake up from the effort.) Also, in my experience, showing the amount of emotion she is in a dream tends to make me wake up.

Windscion

In the dream, this dude was her captor, so in the role of hero of magic, she'd be thrilled. This reaction is pi radians away from that, and requires an explanation.

Some Ed

Maybe, in the dream, this dude was also her father, and she was in on the plot. "Meh, it's just a couple ml of blood. You can lose more than that just going to the doctor." Sure, it would require her to give an explanation after, but sudden emotional reactions don't care about awkward. Alternatively, she could've recognized him as her father while somehow avoiding cognitive dissonance on the rest of the dream. Sometimes stuff like that happens in dreams.

Some Ed

Different people have different relationships with their relatives. Grandfather can still be emotionally very close, especially if relationships with actual parents are strained and the grandfather was the safe family member. Alternatively, I could also see someone in his line of work having occupational hazard reasons for a child later in life. "Director, thank you for rescuing us. I can't believe you managed to resist all the arousal magic flying around like it was nothing!" "Well, I'm an old man. It's easier to resist at my age. But it was nice that it reminded me everything still works down there." {Exchange of meaningful look.} 9 months later: "I'm *WHAT*!?!"

Plus watching a magical creature walk up and wink another human out of existence would be terrifying. Like, sure he's a bad guy, but a mean monster just marched up, insulted your friends, and then makes a guy just...cease to exist? I feel like "What did you do to him?!" is a valid reaction to that, especially if you're a sort of snarky pessimist.
